Personal:

I started running at age 40 (14 years ago!)  I am married to Harold, he is a super supportive husband and we enjoy running and biking the trails along the Wasatch Front together. Between us we have 7 children and 9 grandchildren.  I am really having fun trying new races in scenic parts of Utah, I am a newbie in the ultrarunning world, I am slow, but love everything about it!  I have a lot to learn, but I am enjoying the journey.

I have come up with 3 health minded goals for 2010 that I am going to post to keep me honest and report on daily for my benefit.  I thought I would avoid saying that I would give up certain things forever because that is unrealistic for me. I am trying to make it real simple  so I can keep this up for a whole year.

1. drink 100 oz. of water a day

2. one green smoothie a day ( my smoothie recipe is 3 handfuls of spinach, 2 handfuls of mixed frozen berries, a half of a frozen banana and enough OJ to get the consistancy right)  This gives me over 6 servings of fruits and vegetables in one drink.

3. 2 hours of exersize a day at least 6 days a week.

Last year my average miles per week was 30.  This goal should bump that up a knotch.  I would like to do a race a month, and will shoot for that, but I may do some of them as a bandit, because I don't need another t-shirt and I don't race for a "time", and I am too cheap. It is kind of fun for me to pick a local race, start the race early and run the course for fun, just to get the miles in with a group of people.  I find in a race setting I do push myself alittle more, so that would be my meager attempt at speed work.  My ultimate goal is endurance and distance so that I will be stronger and better prepared for the Pony Express 50 miler in Oct.

I am still in the process of making up my 2010 Race Schedule, but here is what I have so far.

Jan.- Painters Half Marathon

April- (SLC Marathon-as a bandit, probably the last 13 miles)

April- Red Mountain 50K

Aug.- Park City Marathon or Jordonelle triathlon

Oct. St. George Marathon

Oct. Pony Express 50 miler

Today was great, I did a 2 hour and 10 min snow shoeing trip with my dear hubby and our good friends Kim and John.

I had my very yummy green smoothie and am working on my water.

Day # 1  is going well.

Here's to a HAPPY, HEALTHY & FUN 2010!!! May you reach all your goals!

GREAT day of snow shoeing btw!

Thanks Smooth! We will see if I can keep these goals at least until Painters and then maybe do some revamping!

I like your goals Leslie, and I hope you reach them all. I also want to workout 6 days per week, although I have a 30 minute minimum goal. You're a lot more hardcore than me :)I also want to do St. George and the Pony Express 50.

Scot, thanks for the words of encouragement. I am on day 3 and going strong! haha!

I hope you do St. George and the Pony Express, those are on the top of my list along with the Red Mountain 50K in April. Good luck on your goals, your 30 min workout is more intense than my 2 hour workout I am sure!

So far my New Year's resolutions are all being met!  If I can do 4 days, I can do a week!  I got up early and did 2.40 on the treadmill and then took off with Ardath and Jeff on a great snow shoeing outing up at Suncrest.  We hiked along a ridge and could look down into Utah County and Salt Lake. Pretty cool.

I went to the spa to work out, and didn't eat before I left. I did a mile and half on the TM and then went to muscle-up, I felt pretty weak at muscle-up and couldn't lift as heavy as normal, I know better, but I was trying to be tough and cut back on my calorie intake.  DUMB. Tonight I will go the the gym and get in a half hour of cardio to get my 2 hours in.

Did the treadmill tonight.  I got my 2 hour goal in.

I can not eat before I run, but I can eat before I do weights. Either way, I feel sick!!! How is the weight loss going so far??? Losing weight stinks, but it is my goal for this year----forget racing, I just want to be skinny!

From leslie peterson on Tue, Jan 05, 2010 at 10:45:24 from 174.52.158.81

Kelli, I need to eat before I do anything physical or I bonk. I know better, and get in trouble every time I don't. I am down 4 pounds since the 1st and want 6 more off before Painters. Then I want to lose 5 more pounds by my birthday on March 19, and then I...... oh crap, I have along way to go, but I am trying to make mini goals.

How are you doing on your weight loss efforts? It does stink.

From Kelli on Tue, Jan 05, 2010 at 16:47:25 from 71.219.96.112

Everything I have lost since the 1st was probably water. The pills I have to take this month are making me retain water, so this weekend I combated that by guzzling water all day. I am so sick of water, but it worked. I did give in and drink a diet coke today, I decided I have earned it!!!

As of today, I weigh 141. My ultimate goal has always been 135, but I was at 137 a few weeks ago and I can tell you, 135 is no longer going to cut it. I am chubbier in the belly now than when I weighed 150. I am not sure why, but I am. So, the weight goal is just something to work for, what I want is the belly fat mostly gone (some will stay, I have 5 kids that ave stretched my belly skin out a little too much).

SO FRUSTRATING!!!!!! But this year is all about losing weight and staying there. No racing, hard training makes me gain weight. I will still do races, I am just not going to worry about my time and go all crazy training for them.

From leslie peterson on Tue, Jan 05, 2010 at 17:55:47 from 174.52.158.81

Kelli, well here we go again! This is the year!!! Of course I think you are total perfection, but I understand we are all hard on ourselves, so I am just going to wish you luck to make it to your goal. I think in the perfect world 140 for me would be the best, but I made it to 145 4 years ago, felt fabulous and then immediately gained 5 pounds. I need to figure out the right formula. Good luck to us both!!!! Still checking in with WW?

From Kelli on Tue, Jan 05, 2010 at 18:22:29 from 71.219.96.112

I actually made it to WW every month last year!! I usually went on the last possible day, but I made it. It helps me to know someone is going to see my weight and know whether I have gained or lost, it is a little motivation. When I track points, I do really well. So, I am determined to track every day for the month of January, and then hopefully make it a habit. I get tired of it, so I quit, but then I gain weight. WW works really well for me because it allows me to eat pizza and candy when i want to!!! How about you?

I am not perfection, weight really is arbitrary. I was reading the WW magazines at the library and someone my height and 149 pounds was a teeny size 4. It all just depends on where you carry it, and I carry it all in my belly (and back, gotta love back fat!) I am always looking at the weight loss success stories on TV and online and in magazines to find people my height just to see the differences in weights and sizes. BUT, I am healthy, dang it!

From leslie peterson on Tue, Jan 05, 2010 at 18:54:52 from 174.52.158.81

That is great WW helps, I always cheat. I haven't found my magic bullet, I thought training for the 50 and bootcamp would do it, and the harder I work out the more I need to eat, but not working out isn't the answer either, so I am still searching, but like you say Kelli, I am healthy!!! We do have that going for us! We will do it!!!!!

From Smooth on Tue, Jan 05, 2010 at 19:21:19 from 174.23.217.47

I usually eat something in the morning even if it's just a yogurt or banana and drink before my runs. Lately though I feel like a blimp so I just eat a few pretzels with a glass of EmergenC. Skipping breakfast is really bad for me b/c I end up stuffing my face from 4pm on till I go to bed. Then the bad cycle starts all over again.

OK, you're an inspiration to me, I'm going to go to bed early and stop eating after 8pm; then get up early to eat a good breakfast. I need to drop 6 lbs before Painter's. Is that possible?

I should add strength training to my routine too. I heard you burn more calories doing weights than running!

From leslie peterson on Tue, Jan 05, 2010 at 19:32:45 from 174.52.158.81

Oh Smoothie, that is my number too! 6 pounds by Painters! It will be tough, I am going to try!!! I need your energy! I know the strength training helps!

Okay, it has been one week of 2010, I did pretty darn good with my New Years Resolutions, but have decided I need to tweak them a bit.

Goal #1 and #2 will remain the same.

1- drink 100oz. of water a day

2-drink one green smoothie a day

#3 is changing, instead of 2 hours a day 6 days a week, I am changing it and giving myself the option of one hour of intense training or 2 hours of a moderate work out, I found myself not pushing very hard knowing I had to stay in the gym 2 hours. We will give this a try next week, I am thinking it will encourage me to really sweat and get the work out over with.   I need options and flexibility.

That is actually a cool change you are making, but what you are doing is really making your resolution more meaningful, instead of making it easier. Awesome.

It is snowing out, I think I have the winter blues.  I did muscle up but bailed out 10 miniutes early, I am thinking of climbing back into bed.  3 more days until we head out to St. George and then on to the beach house, I am not sure I can make it that long. I need sunshine and warmth.

Today was my Oval day, I did 10 miles with Gary.  Sat. is the half marathon in St. George, I am not really "ready" but I will get thru it, I have got to start my 2010 race schedule, may as well do it in Jan.  I feel like I am in pretty crappy shape, but I have done races in crappier shape, so whatever....  Is anyone else worried about the weather?  I am not concerned about running in bad weather, just the drive down.

Is anyone nervous about the drive to St. George?  This is killing me, I may have to back out.

I didn't do muscle-up today because if we do get to St. George I don't want to be stiff.

I am so bummed about this weather, I feel like heading down and then getting a hotel along the way if it gets too ugly.   What are you doing???

3 miles on the eliptical and indoor track, very wimpy, I am bummed about the storm and our change of plans.  We are bailing out on the half marathon and flying to California for a week.  I can't believe more of you aren't bailing, it sounds like the storm is going to be really bad down south.  Drive safe everyone and I will be anxious to read your race report while sitting on my lounge chair on the beach.

Harold and I chickened out on driving to St. George for the half marathon, the storm  made me nervous. We ended up driving to the beachhouse Sat. morning.  It is beautiful down here, the storm has passed and it is warm and sunny.  I got up this morning and did 11 miles along the beach to Dana Point and then did a few little trails in the area and then ran back to the beach house at Capistrano Bay. Tonight after dinner Harold and I will walk along the beach for 2 miles so I can get my 13 miles in.

Harold and I got up and did a 2 mile walk along the beach and then drove over to Dana Point with Julie and Paul and walked along the coast in search of a cave that Julie heard about.  We have been coming here for over 20 years and never knew about this cave. It was fun exploring, we saw lots of sea critters and shells along the way.

My son lives at the top of Emigration canyon and said he has 3 feet of snow,  bless his heart.  It is beautiful here.

I got an email from Davy Crockett, looks like the Pony Express is open for registration now.  I am excited to sign up and have it to look forward to for the next 9 months.

I am back from my trip. I need to shift gears, and I am so not ready, thank goodness it is Friday and I have Sat. and Sun. to get my head on straight. I picked up the Eat Clean recipe book while in California and am really going to try doing my meals from that book.  It is what I have been searching for, a good recipe book with SIMPLE healthy ingredients.  I told Harold things are changing in this house, he can keep all his chips and cookies and ice cream, but the meals WILL be healthier.  I am on a mission to get ready for a strong 2010 race year.  My first race is the Red Mountain 50K April 24, I have time to do this up right, but I need to start TODAY!  To get to my 12 pound goal by my 55th birthday I need to drop 1.71 pounds a week.  It is a very reasonable goal!

I started my morning out with a 2 mile eliptical session, hopefully I can do something else today, but I am playing catch up in the salon.  Be patient with me, I am going to be rambling alot and talking myself into better nutrition and better workouts.

We hiked on the trail that started near the Little Dell golf course.  I think it is called Alexander Springs or something like that.  Ardath had been there before, it follows a river, we didn't see another person on the trail.  There are alot of beaver dams but we couldn't see them because of the snow. I am looking forward to hiking it in the summer. We got so hot we were peeling off several layers, blue sky, it was awesome.

From Kelli on Fri, Feb 05, 2010 at 09:55:23 from 71.219.89.82

I am up for a Cheesecake Factory lunch when ever you busy girls can get there! Now when is your birthday? Mine is March 19th. I am really hoping to get to my first goal by then. I went to lunch today with some gals and had a boring green salad and a vegetable soup that I am sure was out of can, so I didn't eat the soup, the salad was dull. Tonight I am eating salmon and barley, I have been so good for 5 days and have only lost one pound. I am just happy though that I am doing well, I figure the scale will reward me very soon.

Let's make a lunch date!

From Kelli on Wed, Feb 10, 2010 at 21:44:10 from 71.219.89.82

Maybe we should wait to do the lunch AFTER your birthday, when we have BOTH met our goals???

Woo hoo!!!  I did 17 instead of the planned 16!  I downloaded Eat, Pray, Love.  I was prepared to not like it, but I have heard so much about it that I thought I would try it and I was surprised that I enjoyed it so much, maybe because I had no expectations.  Whatever the case, it kept me interested and time flew by and I felt awesome.  Ernie joined us today, but  I didn't visit much due to the great audio.  It is just nice to have their friendly faces there and to wave to each other as one of us passes by the other.  Great morning! Now I need to get to work.

I made a mistake and did 18 miles!

Tonight is a GNO with my girls and cousins at the Cheesecake Factory to celebrate my Jana's birthday. Tomorrow Fiddler on the Roof at the Hale theater, then a spa day with my girls on Monday.  I feel like singing that Black Eyed Peas song, "Today's going to be a good day"!  Except I guess I should say weekend instead.

I ran out at the Oval by myself this morning.  Ernie and Gary went out of town.  It was alittle lonesome, but I had a new book on tape to listen to and it was really good, The Associate by John Grisham. 17 miles went by pretty well, the last mile was not fun at all.  I am not quite sure how many miles I should work up to for my 50K in April.  Maybe 25 miles?  I guess that sounds like a good number.  I am not one to be very specific in my training.  If I take this stuff seriously it wouldn't be as much fun!

I need to learn to add, I did 19 miles not 18!!!!!!  Last week I did 18 not 17!  Good news for me.

From leslie peterson on Thu, Feb 25, 2010 at 21:10:46 from 174.52.158.81

I love the Oval! Life is good right now, still trying to get my fanny in shape for my Red Mountain 50k. I am hoping to drop some weight, but the older I get the HARDER it is. I am still 4 pounds heavier than my Pony Express weight, I was packing too much on for that!

From Kelli on Thu, Feb 25, 2010 at 22:49:39 from 71.219.89.82

I am still mad that they canceled that race last year on me---the year i could have done it. BUT, maybe I will do it next year?!? I am thinking of doing Goblin Valley this fall, wanna join me????

Weight loss for sure gets harder as we age, I have noticed that. I grimace when i look at the weight watcher plan and see how you LOSE points the older you get. THAT is not fair!!! However, you have to see that I lose weight M-TH, then i gain it all back every weekend. I need to have a good weekend where that does not happen, but it will not be this weekend! I think I am going to really focus on behaving over the weekends in March and see what I can do...we will see. I have a sweet tooth. I just picked all of the marshmallows out of the box of Lucky Charms. My kids will be very sad in the morning.

From leslie peterson on Fri, Feb 26, 2010 at 00:18:39 from 174.52.158.81

Kelli, Goblin Valley is so fun! THat was my first 50K, you would like it. It is usually over the Halloween weekend, but I will be doing the Pony Express 2 weeks before I think. I am excited to see how you like it. The only down side, in my opinion, is you really have to camp out and it was tough sleeping in a tent the night before a race. The course is perfect though, just little rolling hills.

KELLI!!!! HOW COULD YOU??? The kids will be so sad in the morning!!!!!! Haha! I always love hearing you talk about weight loss it makes me laugh, I am twenty pounds heavier than you and would kill to look like you, but we all have our own issues I know. I hope you can sleep and not feel to guilty for marshmellow binge! :)

From Kelli on Sat, Feb 27, 2010 at 19:47:46 from 71.219.89.82

NOT GOOD!! I do not like camping! Maybe I will buy an RV!!!!! I just want a race that is not too close to St George. Pony Express is much closer and I met Crockett and he is so nice...what to do???

WW just works for me, it allows me my junk but keeps the rest of my eating somewhat in check. However, I bet I have gained back those 5 pounds this weekend. I LOVE food!

From leslie peterson on Sat, Feb 27, 2010 at 19:55:41 from 174.52.158.81

I found the best place to trail run in the winter today, I wish I had figured this out years ago.  I LOVED IT!  Ardie and I parked at the top of Gaurdmans Pass where they block off the road for the winter and hiked up to the point you can look over into Park City.  Blue skies, warm sun, beautiful views and of course killer company. I think Ardie is reading this, thank you Ardie for this great day and every monday we are together, it is one of the highlights of my week!  I ended up running down half of the way, it was great trail running, you sink into the snow about an inch and have to watch your footing with all the tracks from the snowmobiles ( we only saw two snowmobiles thank goodness, Mondays are so quiet in the mountains)  They stink, we could smell the exhaust as they pasted us.  Stupid machines.

I want to get Gary or Maurine to do this route and run down into Park City.  I need to make a plan and soon!!

I did muscle-up this morning and then did a spinning class. I have not done that in years, the first time I did it, it about killed me so I have been afraid to go back.  My  mom spins twice a week, so I thought I should give it another  try.  Now that I am older and wiser I have no problem taking it easy, I actually got off the bike 3 times to stretch. I only went 14 miles, I noticed the older woman next me ( she looked like she was in her 70's) had done over 19 miles. So what do I say about that?  Who cares!?  That's what I say! I am all into baby steps.  I gave myself 5 miles because I was working hard for one hour and I usually run 5 miles in one hour.  However, I was using different muscles and this work out was much harder than a 5 mile run.

Mom, if you are reading this, are you impressed?  You go mama!  I hope I can spin when I am your age!

How in the world do you get mileage on a spin bike? I've noticed others can report it as well, but all the classes I go to don't have bikes that show mileage. I guess they're just old school :)

Nice work on the double this morning, and I'm glad you were smart and listened to your body. You won't pay for it as much as us crazies that haven't learned to do that yet :)

Once the we get over the butt pain...then it seems to get easier (for me anyway). I've noticed my inner thighs getting stronger from cycling (because they BURN while spinning!), so I think you're right - it's a GREAT xtraining!

I took the whole weekend off, it was a nice break!  Harold and I took Odee for a walk in Tanner Park Sat. before the snow hit, but it was short and not really worth blogging about.

Today I went to gym and a did 2 miles of speed work and then Ardie and I went to Park City and had a beautiful walk along the marathon course around the Swanner Reserve.  She took me to lunch afterwards for an early birthday  lunch at Squatters.  Pretty stinkin nice!!!!

Today was a little discouraging. I went to the Oval with Gary, and had a great book on tape to listen too, but I felt tired and my legs felt weak and achy, not really painful, just like old lady legs that are completely gooey and out of shape.  Ugh!  The thought of running my 50K in 5 weeks sounds pretty scarey. I hope I can improve my fitness level alittle by then, or it isn't going to be very fun.

I have been sick all weekend. It was so nice to get up and plod in this beautiful sunshine. Some good old slow ultra miles.  I ran from my house up to the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon and tried to go up the Little Cottonwood trail but ran into ice after just a short distance, so I ran back down Little Cottonwood Road and past La Caille and home for 9 miles.  I feel like taking Odee and going for a hike up the canyon, but I decided to do some yard work instead.  Spring is here!  Happy Days!

From Smooth on Thu, Mar 25, 2010 at 23:57:51 from 174.23.198.220

ohhh, I have been tapering since Oct! haha! I am chubby and out of shape. Pretty discusting really, but I will survive! A half marathon at Thanksgiving Point sounds more reasonable at this point, never heard of it, is it new? Tell Wendy hi and good for you to volunteer!

Today should have been my first day volunteering at Red Butte Gardens, but with all the snow I bagged it. Since I had a free morning I took 3 fitness classes at the rec center, muscle-up, track and tone ( a new class where you are running and doing afew exercises) and spinning and decided I would take the 6 week triathlon class that starts up in a week or so. It is from 5:00am to 6:30 four days a week.  I think it will be similar to my bootcamp but they won't be calling me names, and it is much cheaper.  It is the first time they have offered a tri class at CHRC so it is very reasonable.

I am running out of time!  My 50K is 17 days away!  I feel like a cow!  I must drop 10 pounds, I need to take drastic  measures!  This is going to be my venting page, please feel free to ignore me completly as I am going to get crazy  these next 17 days.

I got up this morning and the scale screamed at me!  I am at my highest weight in the last few years.  I am not sharing that number with you but will report my loss daily for the next 17 days.

This morning I ran 9.36 miles on the JRP with Gary, it was beautiful, we had a nice visit and I am ready for more miles.  I need to cut Paul's hair and then do another appt. and then I will get back out and get a few more miles in.  I plan to go to the rec center every evening and get at least another short workout in.  It stinks to get old, I eat less and better than I used to and still can not seem to drop the weight.  HELP!  If anyone has any tricks please share.  I need to burn more calories and go to bed hungry and onery I guess.

This morning I had a green smoothie before my run.  During and after my run I had some home made lowfat healthy little cookies made with quinoa, oats, whole wheat flour and flax seed)

4:00 pm update, I did a short hike with Odee on the Pipeline, bad call, I waded thru at least 6 inches of mud and slush.  I ate a banana on the way up in the car.  I am hoping to get in an evening work out at the gym.  So far my day has been good, I should drop acouple of pounds and then that is where it starts to get really tough.

9:30pm update, I had some turkey speghetti for dinner and then did 20 min. on the stationary bike at the rec center.   Today went well, hopefully I can keep this up tomorrow.

What race is this in 17 days?

I'm sure you'll be just fine. Keep focused and work hard and you'll be great. Your base fitness is there, you just need to mentally get there.

From RAD on Wed, Apr 07, 2010 at 14:58:53 from 67.172.229.125

I wish I had a good miracle suggestion for you! I've always just kept a food journal when I get really serious about losing weight. I also feel that increasing my protein v. carb intake helps as well. Don't overdo it, but I simply make sure it's in a good 30/30/40 balance (30%fat 30%protein 40%carbs).

Good luck with your 2nd workouts, not eating after 7 or 8 (depending on your life schedule) will make a difference too. You've worked SO hard, that I'm sure the race will turn out great despite the scale!! Keep up your hard work...you're almost there!

From leslie peterson on Wed, Apr 07, 2010 at 15:19:02 from 174.52.158.81

Jun, it is the Red Mountain 50K, my favorite race of the year. Thanks for the positive words, I am going to work hard and see what I can accomplish.

Rad, I agree more protein less carbs, I know that will help! 2 workouts a day and going to bed hungry just might do it!!! I am determined!!!

From Smooth on Wed, Apr 07, 2010 at 18:54:42 from 174.23.201.210

I agree that you have a good fitness base and will do great in 17 days!

You're eating healthy. I just received an email from Real Age that suggest drinking a full glass of water BEFORE each meal is a great way to loose weight. Keep up the good work, you will get there!

From Scott Wesemann on Wed, Apr 07, 2010 at 18:55:01 from 66.239.250.209

leslie- I think you should just concentrate on getting yourself physically ready for the race with your workouts, and the weight will take care of itself. Your body will know where it needs to be.

I would worry about trying to lose weight by not eating when you're hungry because you could start to burn some of your muscle. I'm not an expert by any means, but I would think you would want to make sure you are giving your body everything it needs in order to perform the best it can.

You never know, the new weight could be added muscle. I think you are doing great with your workouts, so I would concentrate more on how you feel, and less on what the scale says... then again, I am a rookie when it comes to this. :)

good luck!

From Kelli on Wed, Apr 07, 2010 at 18:56:07 from 71.219.92.128

Scott and Kelli, thank you! I think just putting it out here on the blog will make me take this more seriously, I eat pretty good but not perfect. I need to be perfect for just 17 days. I know I need to fuel my body so I won't do anything too radical, I will just try to eat clean and healthy and work out like a maniac and see what happens. Thank you my friends! I was happy to wake up to a loss of 3.4 pounds, of course that is the easy part,  the next 6.6 will be killer, but I feel real determined to do this.  I was going to take a tri class, but decided I would just get up at 5:30am on my own and work out, I have become real frugal lately and didn't want to pay for it.  I got up at 5:30 this morning and put on my new clip hed headlamp and took off for a run up to BCC and back and then came home and took Odee over to the pond for acouple of loops. I am going to spin this morning also.  I really liked going over to the gym last night, it was only for 20 min. but it keeps me focused on this mission and I am not as tempted to sit on the couch and eat chocolate covered pomegrante seeds!

Day #2  down 3.4  and 6.6 to go!

I am crazy.  Yesterday for an early dinner,( 3:30 in the afternoon), I had a 1/2 of a turkey wrap from Costco and then just ate raw veggies in the evening while playing cards with some friends.  They had pizza, I did not have one bite.  Yay me.  I got up this morning and the scale was up and  was really ticked and ate nothing before my run.  I met Rachel and Smooth and Kathy and two guys from the blog, I knew I would be slow, but on top of being slow, I was STARVING to death.  I always eat before a run.  Anyway, I took off with the gang, but lagged behind right from the start and decided to just do 4 miles to reach another 40 mile week.  It's all good, it was fun to say Hi and Goodbye!  I came home and the scale was still up and I have been SO good.  Oh well.

I came home ate some whole wheat cereal and then had the other half my my turkey wrap for lunch and tonight we are taking my girlfriend from Escalante out for Thai food, so I will probably be up tomorrow too.  You know I am doing the best I can, and what ever happens with the scale, so be it.

Day #4  total down 3.3 pounds.

It was fun to see you girls!!!!

Darn scale! You've been SOOOO GOOD with your nutrition!!! No worries, I'll bet it will be down tomorrow! BUT, DON't starve yourself. Eat so you can run and workout.

It was so good to see you at the beginning. You look skinny already and so BEAUTIFUL as always!

Enjoy Thai tonight! It's my favorite! I love their soup!

Good luck with the food thing...Just keep at it and you will do great.

Smooth and kathy, it was nice to see you today. I wish I had your zippy energy! I was really dragging, it was a beautiful day though.

Maurine, I know that, but I thought it might be different this time.....dah. I am frustrated. I just got back from eating

Thai food and all my good work is down the tube! Oh well.

From leslie peterson on Tue, Apr 13, 2010 at 14:24:21 from 174.52.158.81

Kelli, I had to stop posting the weight, it was driving me crazy. I feel pretty good about being ready for Red Mountain, I absolutely love the race. It will be a good time. I will be running it heavier than I would have liked, but what's new?

Good luck to you with Boston, that is a huge accomplishment. I hope you can enjoy it and not worry about the kids too much.

From Kelli on Tue, Apr 13, 2010 at 14:26:55 from 71.219.92.128

Posting my weight stressed me out for a very long time (especially when it inevitably goes up), but now I am used to it and I actually do not think many people even look anymore (unless I bring it up). it has been a good motivator for me, but you have to do what works for you!

I am still mad they canceled Red Mountain last year when i was signed up, darn them!

From leslie peterson on Tue, Apr 13, 2010 at 14:28:32 from 174.52.158.81

I'm with Kelli - JUST muscle up is an understatement. I'm sure things will be GREAT for you at the race, and you will come back w/out those extra pounds!

Boston is a ONE TIME thing, so next year I am there!

From leslie peterson on Tue, Apr 13, 2010 at 14:40:38 from 174.52.158.81

Rachel, I wish you were right, but I have too much to lose. I only lost one pound on my 50 miler and it was back the next day. I may be stuck at being a healthy large robust woman forever, its okay I guess, I am grateful for good health and good joints.

Kelli, I am glad you are going to do Red Mountain next year, you will be hooked. Rachel, you should do it too!!!

From RAD on Tue, Apr 13, 2010 at 14:50:24 from 67.172.229.125

Oh, I would LOVE to, but I don't see myself being back to any sort of high mileage by then. I'm a nursing mother for the first year for baby, and so I'll probably have to maintain a simple 40-50/week and maybe peak only once or twice for a marathon (I'm hoping). I just worry about it too much...I guess I'll have to see how it goes when the time comes. For sure you can count me in 2012!!

I had a charlie horse last night and my leg is still sore, so I did a walk with Odee this morning, I have been tapering alittle early, but oh well, it all feels right. I am going to run from my house to Liberty Park tomorrow and jump into the SL Marathon course.  Harold is doing the Bike Tour, that will be my last long run before my 50K next week.

Total Distance

Harold did alittle bandit ride on the SL bike tour and then dropped me off at the Cottonbottom to do a little bandit run myself.  I should have waited an hour, I was way ahead of the first place runner, so did most of it solo, however I did have the police escorting me across the street and aid stations that would make silly comments about how I was in first place.  It was not as fun as last year when I jumped in with the mid packers.  I will know for next year.

As far as I can tell there were two white guys in the lead and a Kenyan that was in third place, I wonder where all the Kenyans were?  It was odd.

Nice job on the run, was it as amazing as I can only imagine being in the front of the pack? The guy who won was a white guy @ 2:30 something, his mom butted in line at gear bag pick up, right next to us. She let everyone know who won overall :)

Race: Red Mountain 50K (31.5 Miles) 07:11:58
Total Distance

Wonderful Wonderful Day!

My alarm went off at 3:50 am and got myself ready, Harold took Gary and I to Ivins to catch the bus to the start.  When I did this race two years ago, it was pitch black and I forgot a flashlight, this year it didn't seem as dark, but I was prepared with a headlamp and a flash light, it was interesting to see exactly where we started. It was in Central where the St. George Marathon starts, but we jumped   to a dirt trail/road heading west.

I also didn't remember how many hills there were the first 8 miles.  It was tough going up and down for so long.  After the first 8 miles I got into a comfortable pace and ran with Gary to mile 12 where we hit the paved road.  I changed into my running shoes, got a bite to eat and took off, Gary took the time to use the porta potty and I didn't see him again until about mile 29.  I had the road to myself until we hit Gunlock and then  met up with Harold and Ernie on their bikes.

This year was also different because there were no other slow runners.  They took off fast and after a few minutes they were out of sight.  Being a 55 year old gal, this didn't bother me in the least, they had aid stations every 3 miles, and guys on 4Wheelers driving around checking on us. I was happy with my dear friend Gary's company for the first 12 miles, and then was happy meeting up with Harold who rode along with me for a good portion of the course.

At mile 18 I ran into a  man probably a little younger than me that I had met on the bus, it was his first ultra and he said he was really beat up, I talked to him for a minute and then took off.  The man DNFed, Gary never saw him, so I am not sure what happened to him. On the results they didn't mention any DNFs, I don't know if there were any others.   They also didn't put any of the runners ages down, I would like to think I was one of the older runners, as I came in last place.

Anyway, I felt really pretty good until about mile 29 and then started to drag, I was happy to have Gary catch up to me.  I was really running out gas and I told Harold I will not be able to beat my last years time of 7:18, I guessed I would come in about 10 minutes slower.  At mile 30 my parents came driving by which was a nice emotional plus, I didn't even stop to say hi, I just waved and ran on.  My game plan this year was to NOT socialize at the aid stations and see if I could shave off a few minutes by doing that, because my fitness level was worse than it was two years ago.

Harold coaxed me on and knowing my parents were at the finish line made me run in, instead of the crawling I would have prefered.  I was thrilled when they marked on my bib my offical time of 7:11:58.

I absolutely love this race.  The race directors made me feel like I was the queen of the day, they remembered me from 2 years ago and called me by name when I picked up my packet and cheered me on and gave me hugs at the finish. I will be back next year, and hopefully finish a couple minutes faster.

We had a great weekend, dinner with my dad before the race at the Pasta Factory, hot tubbing and swimming after the race, and then a celebration dinner at the Texas Road House for a steak dinner and then a double feature movie at home which I slept thru.  I am completely crippled today, but I  feel like I have conquered the world.  Kinda funny, I came in dead last and had a PR, not too many people can do that!  Haha!

There were 16 women doing the 50K, this was a really small race.  I think there were 23 men.

Hello Marion!!! No I am not doing TOU, are you? I am doing St. George and the Mesquite Half and am trying to decide on either the Pony Express 50 miler or the Goblin Valley 50K, which are a couple of weeks apart from each other. Not a big race season this year. What are your plans?

I got in late last night and didn't write much about my backpacking trip.  We had a great time, Coyote Gulch is so beautiful. It was fun to enjoy it with my family.  I hope to go down there again soon.  My sister-in-law from California decided this is something she really wants to do more of, my hubby really enjoyed it too, we are going to try and see if we can get in another backpacking trip in around the Bryce or Red Canyon area before the summer is up.

I was wide awake at 5:20, so got up and did 6 miles and saw the sun come up.  No stiffness or soreness at all after the trip.

I just emailed goblin valley. They have me down for the 25k. No way jose. I want the full 50. You don't have to camp but you can. When my husband did it he stayed in Green River. Not too bad considering it is a late start for a race.

From leslie peterson on Thu, Jun 24, 2010 at 16:08:59 from 174.52.158.81

Yes you have to camp unless you want to drive from Green River early in the morning. We camped,it is nice to have a bed the night before a race, but it is worth it, I loved the course. ARe you taking the kids and making a vacation out of it? Will Scott run it?

I figure we are tuff broads and can do anything for one night!!! I haven't signed up yet, but will in a couple of days.

From Kelli on Tue, Jun 29, 2010 at 18:59:42 from 71.219.99.30

It says you need reservations for the one right by the start. But there are some FREE campgrounds (that I do not think can be reserved) about 7 miles out. If you stay in town it is only an hour drive and the race starts at 8 to accommodate for that, so i think a hotel would not be so bad! We are trying to convince Scott's brother to bring his 5th wheel, then we can fit in that with their family and I can have a shower!!!! If not, in a tent we go! I will have to go buy a BIG one to fit me and my 18 kids.

Scott, lucky you!!! I am hiking, but not sure where yet.

Kelli, I could take you with me on the Crest, but you would do better with someone fast to show you the way, you would have to wait for me at every trail fork and go crazy. Maybe you could run back and forth and get in double the miles. The Crest is 12 miles long. I would love to be the one to introduce you to that trail. It is amazing.

From leslie peterson on Wed, Jul 21, 2010 at 20:35:33 from 174.52.158.81

Rachel, it was an okay hike, all hikes are good, I like to know where everything is and how they all connect. This one was rather steep and some scrambling, it might not be good for the little ones. My friend did it in the spring and said the waterfall was really beautiful, it was quite wimpy this late in the summer. I hear Stewart Falls in American Fork Canyon is a nice easy waterfall hike. I hope to try it out and I will let you know.

I actually did a 12 plus mile bike ride with Harold this morning, and did the bike/run conversion, I can not believe how hard it is for me to bike, I wonder if it is my body or in my head.  I tried riding with him acouple of days ago and road my bike up 2 miles to the mouth of BCC and told him to go on and I turned around and went home exhausted.  Today we rode up to  the mouth of BCC and I was fine ( I am actually riding Harold's  Kona Mountain Bike, so that makes it a little tougher) anyway, I rode with him along Wasatch Blvd to about 45th South and turned around.  It was not that bad, it would be fun to see the differance on a women's road bike.  Tomorrow we are going to try and go a little further.  Kind of a nice change.

I still haven't signed up for GV. Is it getting filled up fast?

I don't know if I'm cut out to run ultra and on dirt trail. I still have three more road marathons to run before then! Man, I'm gonna be sooooo beat up!

From leslie peterson on Mon, Aug 09, 2010 at 14:41:41 from 174.52.158.81

The vacation was great Smooth, I need to get on my training though.

3 marathons is crazy, if you don't do GV I would totally understand, but I will miss you. I love hearing about all you do! Good luck these next few months.

From Smooth on Mon, Aug 09, 2010 at 14:48:31 from 174.23.203.161

I have a question! Do we need trail shoes for GV? When I ran Pony Express last year, I ran with my regular road running shoes with the dirty-girl gator you told me about and changed socks once after passing thru that sandy part. Feet were fine other than I lost the two big toe nails! I have not trained on trails and wonder how much I need to do to prepare for GV!

From leslie peterson on Mon, Aug 09, 2010 at 15:09:58 from 174.52.158.81

Smooth, you don't need to do anything "extra" to train for GV, your marathons are enough training. I think you might want trail shoes, however, it wouldn't stop me from running it if I didn't have any. Glad to hear you are still considering it! I think you would really enjoy it, if you just kick back and enjoy a day in the desert, it would be less taxing than running a fast marathon on the road I think.

Just  a quick note to say my dad is going to run in the Goblin Valley race with me in Oct.  He is doing the 25K and I will do the 50K.  We have done 3 marathons together and a smaller race at Big Sur, but that was 5 years ago. I think he will love having the "ultra experience"! I am so excited about pacing too, I did it years ago from Lambs to Brighton, and last year I ran from Brighton to the finish. This year will be short, but that is a good thing, I just want to be a part of all fun and not stress. My runner is Tara Workman Tulley from Springville. She would like to finish under 30 hours, but has had some health issues, and said might have to be happy with just a finish. Craig, I hope you see Maurine on the way, I am going to the finish to watch everyone come in, so I will look for you! Good luck!

Race: st. george marathon (26.2 Miles) 05:45:00
Total Distance
26.20

This was my 14th St. George Marathon.  It is always fun, but I don't have much to brag about this time. I was under trained and over weight. I saw the pictures Harold took and about puked.  I really need to  get serious about my fitness level  and my weight.

I drove down with Maurine and Marcia and had a great time visiting.  Since we left in the morning I got to spend about 3 hours at the expo!  It was fun running into Smooth and Kelli and few others.

Went to the Pasta Dinner with Maurine and Marsha, it has improved since I last went 10 years ago.

Spent the evening with Harold and some of the grandkids.

I got up at 3:30am and rode up the bus alone but found Maurine and Vic right away. We got to visit with Rachel, Smooth and Teena for afew minute. It was really warm, which is odd, I usually freeze.

Maurine and I ran together for the first 10 or 11 miles, I felt fine, we were in front of the5:30 pace group.  At mile 11 the heat started to really bother me and I started to slow down, I didn't see Maurine again.

At mile 15 I ran into Vic and we played leap frog the rest of the way in.  After about mile 19 Harold called he said it is 88 degrees, it felt like 108.  I could not believe so many people were walking. I saw one guy laying in a tiny piece of shade and someone asked him if he was okay and he said help was coming, acouple minutes later an ambulance came by to get him.

Running the last few miles thru the streets were tough, but I kept moving in fear of going over the 6 hour limit.  Thank goodness I made it.

Next year I willl be more prepared and have some of this weight off.

After the marathon we went and played with the grandkids at  the pool and then went to the 10 year Banquet.  Fun times.

Les, I enjoyed spending two days with you. Sorry you struggles so much. That heat was awful. I think I really prefer the crappy weather - as miserable as I was then, it was the heat that actually made me want to quit.

Get a good recovery in for Goblin Valley! (What day is that?)

From Snoqualmie on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 10:58:49 from 24.18.192.33

Sounds like it was a killer day in terms of the temps. Good job toughing that out. The slower marathons can be the hardest in those conditions because you are out there sweating for so long. Good job!

This sounds like my kind of race day-- except for the heat. To be able to play in the pool with the grand kids post race is the best you can hope for. I love that, as one of the most hard core ultra marathoners on the blog, you write "got to get serious about my fitness level". Funny girl. I know what you mean though...Good luck at Pony Express. Hopefully the weather will cooperate!! Great job at one more SGM under your (very accomplished) belt!

My legs look like elephantitis! The water retention is decreasing though, but not the soreness!

A good half in Jan is the St George (Painter's) Half. I ran it the last four years as part of the Runner's Series. I won't be running it in 2011 as my daughter is expecting her 4th baby in Jan. I will be in Texas. I wish I could run the Texas Marathon which is on New Year Day right where my daughter lives, in the town of Kingwood. But hubby wants me to spend New Year in Utah w/ family since I will be gone for a month.

Have you checked marathonguide.com? There are lots of good marathons in CA in Dec and Jan. But most are on Sunday. I am going to run Valley of Fire Nov 20 in Nevada. then I will take a break in Dec.

You will like running one race a month, it keeps me motivated. Can't wait to see you in a couple weeks!

From leslie peterson on Wed, Oct 06, 2010 at 15:06:01 from 174.52.158.81

Smooth, thanks for all the info. I guess taking off in Dec. would be a good thing. I really can't afford to do a lot of traveling. I am doing the Mesquite Half in Nov. I let way to much time pass between races this year and it was not good. I will be watching you as you plan your 2011 to get some ideas. I guess you will do the Grand Slam again? The commitment scares me.

I am looking forward to seeing you in a few weeks too. I still haven't run since the marathon, this one really hit me hard, I may try to do a few miles tomorrow morning and if see if my legs still work!!!

From leslie peterson on Wed, Oct 06, 2010 at 15:08:31 from 174.52.158.81

Oh and Smooth, I think a new baby will be much more fun than Painters!!!

I have not checked out the marathon website, I will do that.

Have a great day!!

From Maurine/Miles on Wed, Oct 06, 2010 at 15:51:15 from 63.255.172.2

You could join us in Disneyworld on January 8th. There is a HUGE half marathon there.

From leslie peterson on Wed, Oct 06, 2010 at 16:09:09 from 174.52.158.81

Sounds fun Maurine, but my big travel race is in Hawaii and I am too poor to do both!

From Smooth on Thu, Oct 07, 2010 at 16:54:10 from 67.41.235.104

You are going to Hawaii? I am jealous!!!

I just signed up to run Valley of Fire (same day as Mesquite). Talked a friend into traveling w/ me since my hubby can't take me.

I also signed up Ogden. Their Half is already sold out and the Marathon is filling up fast. Crazy, consider they opened registration on Oct 1.

Anyhow, I think I will do the Slam again plus Boston in 2011 or look into trail running. Oh and couple of SG Runner Series races to get a guaranteed entry to SG. I will probably do Snow Canyon Half Nov 6.

From Smooth on Thu, Oct 07, 2010 at 16:56:41 from 67.41.235.104

Oh, Valley of Fire has a Half. It is about 45 min drive from Mesquite. The entire entry fee goes to a charity for critically ill children. Plus the scenery is sooooo much better than Mesquite Half, in my opinion. check it out at www.vofmarathon.ning.com

From leslie peterson on Thu, Oct 07, 2010 at 17:45:16 from 174.52.158.81

Thanks Smooth, I am going to do Mesquite with my neighbor Ardath and her sister from Orange County and Gary. Maybe next year I will try the Valley of Fire.

Your schedule looks like alot of fun, I am afraid to sign up for the Grand Slam, you are so brave! Hopefully I get my 11 races in for 2011, I will try!

I am excited to see how you like doing ultras, I bet you will be hooked! See you GV!!!!!!

Ran the Wasatch Crest with Tracey  and two of his girlfriends.  We met at the park n ride at 6am and was up the canyon and running by 6:30ish, we wore headlamps  and got to the top of Puke hill in time to see the sunrise. Some of trail was covered with an inch or so of snow, the colors were so pretty.  I am sure that will be our last Crest run for the season.

My left ankle has bothered me since St. George, maybe I rolled it, not sure,  guess I better ice it.

It is so nice to be able to run with my son!!!!!

I haven't been able to find any trail shoes my size in the running stores. Do you think I need the trail shoes at GV?

I feel so unprepared.

From leslie peterson on Sun, Oct 10, 2010 at 15:38:56 from 174.52.158.81

I have run trails in road shoes and it is okay, it is not a deal breaker, but trail shoes would be nice. If you do get a new pair make sure to put your road shoes in your drop bad in case they aren't broken in all the way. You will be fine either way! You are a tough little cookie!

I bet it was BEAUTIFUL!!!

So, plans for next weekend? You have done this race before, right? I NEED ADVICE! Do you drop any bags at the aide stations? I am thinking of just sending up baggies with gels in them so I do not have to carry them. And when they said 5 aide stations do they mean 5 out and then the same 5 back (so really 10)??? And can I hitch a ride to the start with you guys so my kids can sleep in?

From leslie peterson on Tue, Oct 12, 2010 at 10:01:12 from 174.52.158.81

Kelli, yes, I did this, but I can't remember all the details, actually it was Anita Fromm who was the RD when I did it, it is now the City of Green River, so I am not sure how that has changed things. I think we had one drop bag at the half way mark, I usually just put in shoes and socks, they usually have lots of food along the way, but I know you have a funny tummy, so putting gels in would be a good idea. I can not remember how many aid stations there are, but it is an out and back and so you do go thru each station twice. I didn't see anything about the number of aid stations on the website.

I would love to drive you to the start! Did you get a cabin at the campground or did you get a hotel room? Either way, we can plan to drive you there, that would be fun.

I am getting excited about this!!!

From leslie peterson on Tue, Oct 12, 2010 at 10:04:16 from 174.52.158.81

Oh, you might want to get your drop bag ready at home so you can use a different color bag that you can easily identify, and not have to sift thru a bunch of white generic bags looking for your name.

From leslie peterson on Tue, Oct 12, 2010 at 10:07:24 from 174.52.158.81

Smooth, if you want to drive down early with us you are welcome too! I may have my mom and dad with us too, I am not sure, but we can all squeeze in and have a cozy ride down!! I think parking is going to be limited.

From Smooth on Tue, Oct 12, 2010 at 12:46:14 from 67.41.235.104

Kelli ~ The course map shows that there will be 7 aid stations in five locations: start/finish, 1/7, 2/6, turnaround, 3/5. Looks like we can have 4-5 drop bags. I plan to use my Park City race bags, like reusable grocery bags for most of the stations. I posted on my blog (yesterday) what I plan to put it my drop bags. If you think of anything else, post and let us know. I am new at this. Just based on what I did at Pony Express last year. I figure I need extra socks, sunscreen. I could only stomach one peanut butter sandwitch, orange slices and banana. Carrying your own gel should be no problem.

Leslie ~ I would love to hitch a ride w/ you if that is okay. I really worry about Larry getting bored w/ nothing to do for 7+ hours. May be he can hang out with Kelly's kids in Green River! :)

I am getting so excited! We shall take our time, enjoy the scenery and eat w/ no guilt! :D

From Kelli on Tue, Oct 12, 2010 at 13:22:29 from 71.219.65.246

Smooth, I do not see it on your blog for Monday or Tuesday???

I will probably not eat anything, I will for sure barf if I even try. I dunno, though, maybe a banana. They will have those along the way, I assume. I do not think I want extra shoes or socks even. The only thing I am thinking I will need is 6 gels (I usually carry 4 in a marathon and typically consume 3-4). BUT there are only 2 kids I can stomach so I want my own. I KNOW if I have to carry 6 it will make my skirt fall down!

I saw that it said 5 aide stations, so I just did not get where they were. That does not seem like much for 31 miles! I have to go 6 miles without a drink? Are you going to carry water, then? And then just fill it up as you go?

I need to NOT stress, but I am a little. I could not even figure out if there was a packet pick up or anything the day before. The website is crazy!

And, YES, we got a cabin so we will be in the same place. I figured one of you two would let me hitch a ride (we are supposed to carpool, so I have to be rule abiding). I just figured Harold would be riding his bike and headed out early.

How should I be tapering this week? I have an ugly blister on my right 4th toe from running 12 miles in my brand new trail shoes on the Rail Trail at PC. I hope it heals up good before Sat. I'm getting excited and nervous at the same time. I also worry about Larry waiting for me all day! :)

Smooth, I am not an expert on this, but I am tapering this week, walking/running 3 or 4 miles a day and nothing on Friday. If your shoes are bothering you make sure to have a change of shoes in your drop bag, and maybe a fresh pair of socks and first aid blister stuff. I usually have no problem with blisters, but a change of shoes and socks always feels good.

I just got a call from my dad and he will not be joining us, my mother is having seizures and he doesn't dare leave her.

I am glad you got Nancy to get our cabins together!!! I need to call her and cancel my dad's cabin.

I am really looking forward to seeing you and Kelly. I hope you guys can slow down just a little and really enjoy the experience!!

Heading down to Goblin Valley to do a 50K with my dear husband who has been on way to many running trips, and still is so very supportive!  I am so excited to be running with my friends, Laurie, Smooth and Kelli!  Harold will be mountain biking with Laurie's husband Chris so he will be having some desert fun too!  My training hasn't been very good but this is my 7th ultra, I know I can "git er done"!

My PR for a 50K is 7:11, I doubt I can beat it, but we shall see, maybe if the stars are aligned....

Race: Goblin Valley 50K 07:11:00
Total Distance
29.83

What a fun weekend!  Harold and I took off around 1:00 to head down to Green River, when we arrived at our cabin at Shady Acres we were greeted by Smooth and Kelli  and then Larry and Scott and 4 of Kelli's little ones. It was so much fun visiting, we all drove over to the Senior Citizen's Center for dinner and talked with some of the other runners and  enjoyed a potato bar dinner.  There were a lot of runners from Colorado.
After we got into bed, Laurie and Chris came knocking on our door, so we visited them for awhile and made plans for our morning ride over to Goblin Valley, about a 45 min. drive.
At 6:30 am Kelli, Smooth, Laurie and I drove over to Goblin with Harold, the rest of the gang were going to sleep in and join us later in the day.
We saw JD at the start and chatted and got some pictures and then we were off.  I stayed with Laurie for most of the first half of the race, we met a gal from Nebraska and a gal from Logan that we ran with for a while.  The aid stations were great, I was fueled by Tagalongs ( Girl Scout Cookies) at every station.  The weather was beautiful, nice and cool with cloud cover for the first half of the race.  Nice scenery and more hills than I remember. I swear running is like childbirth, you forget the hills and remember all the fun and friends, and the pain is quickly forgotten.

I am not very good at checking the pace but when we reached the half way point we had averaged about a 13. something pace.
Laurie was feeling great and took off, I would see her once and awhile from a far blazing ahead in her bright pink shirt.
After the turnaround I was pretty pooped, by mile 18 I was trying to talk myself into dropping out, Chris showed up on his bike at about that point and gave me a smile and a little coaxing and then Harold showed up on his bike at mile 20. I told him I was thinking of dropping and he talked me out of it, he rode by my side until we were almost at the parking lot of the campground. At this point I was really dragging then this beautiful girl came running towards me looking so strong and it was my Kelli!!!  I could have bawled,  I found out that she finished in 3:59 and then went back on the course to run Smooth in and then back again to run me in. I was able to pick up the pace with her encouragement. Kelli is a running angel!!!!!!!
The last mile running thru the Goblins was tough, it was like a maze running back and forth following the path of pumpkins that were set up to mark the trail, some of Kellis's kids and Laurie's kids were playing and following us around.  I kept telling Kelli I would love to beat 7:11, she was pushing me as hard as I could go, at the very end Laurie and her friend came and grabbed my arms and pulled me up the final hill and I crossed the finish line at exactly 7:11 (point something)
I guess the word is out the course was short because of the rainstorm, but whatever I ran the Goblin Valley 50K in 7:11 and I'm sticking to it!!!!
Thank you Kelli, Smooth and Laurie for such a fun weekend, and of course your cute families!!!!  Harold was awesome. Thanks sweetie, if you are reading this! I love you!

Twinkies, Kelli really was an angel, this is the second time she has been a huge help/inspiration to me. She is a "giver" for sure, I feel so lucky to have her as a friend.

JD, it was nice to meet you, I am sure our paths will cross again. I was so sorry to hear about your horrible drive home, I still haven't heard from Smooth, she left Sat. too, I hope Larry and her got home safe. Happy trails JD!

Scott, thanks, it is nice to have another ultra under my belt, this one was a wake up call, I was not prepared and I got what I deserved, I am really going to change my tune and shed some weight and train harder! I am not discouraged, just extremely motivated. My next race is the Mesquite Half next month and I will be READY!

Thanks my dear running friends!

Sno, thanks! How is your running and your life? I haven't heard from you in a while, I hope all is well.

Who cares if the course was short, we ran our ultra! Stupid rain.

Take care. I hope you are resting peacefully and enjoying your vacation!

WAY to keep going at the end. I cannot wrap around my little head running out there that long. I am still in awe of all the ultras you ran. You are going to be my mentor when I decide to commit myself in ultra trail running. And yes, I am semi-hooked! You are right about trail running being easier on the legs than road running!

Happy running! Have fun at Mesquite w/ your friends and enjoy that spa!

I got a free entry to the SG half marathon in the mail....wierd huh?  I think they were picking random names from the marathon.  I wasn't planning on doing it since I will be down that way in Nov. and then again in April, but we will see.  Did any of you get a free pass?

I did gentle yoga with the senior citizens today at the rec center, it was nice to ease back into life, but it was really too gentle for me.  Then I did 10 min. on the eliptical.  Baby steps.

Do they still have the 'silver' classes for seniors? I'd agree that you could whoop any of those 'silver' exercisers!

Yes, not sure what yet, but you can't go wrong with fish nets :) I have the fish net sleeves from the RHPC race last year, so I may go with something along those lines...and I've got a pink 'rocker' wig to go along with it too. I'm going to hit wal-mart tonight and see what I can dig up. It really is a fun race, they will have a heated tent at the start with a stage for a costume contest and everything!! Sad to hear about Odee. I had a dog (Mugsy) do the same thing and we were not quite as lucky. We had to put him to sleep. Good luck with the recovery.

From leslie peterson on Fri, Nov 12, 2010 at 15:13:25 from 174.52.158.81

Yeah, it was horrid, he did make a miraculous turn around, but no, we will not do surgery, as much as I love my dog, I am not a believer in expensive procedures for dogs. I actually think he will heal and be fine for little walks in the park, and being my big house dog. Also at his age, surgery doesn't make sense to me.

Anxiously waiting for your race report! Hope you survived the *tornado* and had a fun weekend at Casablanca!

We had a wonderful time in Mesquite, thanks to my awesome friends and family.  Ardie was there with her hubby, Laurel was there with her hubby ( from Orange County) and Gary and Ernie and last but not least my dear parents.

We arrived Friday and picked up our bib numbers and tee shirts and visited with everyone.  Had fun gambling, playing the penny slots and stayed up late because Ernie had a hot machine and I could hardly break away from the excitement.   My parents took us out to dinner at Katherines at the Casablanca, that was probably the nicest pre-race meal I have ever had.  They spoil us rotten and are so much fun!

Ardie, Laurel, Stan and I got on the bus at 6:30am.  We huddled around in the wind for about a half hour before the race started.  We had horrible strong head winds the whole way, which made the race really difficult. I enjoyed running thru the desert, but hated the wind, good thing it wasn't too cold.

I felt like I was working real hard, but moving like I was in slow motion, sometimes the wind would be so strong it would make my foot bump into my other foot and about trip me over.

The results have not been posted, but my garmin said 3 hours, but my distance showed 13.38, so I am hoping my time was 2:something, but whatever..... we had a great time, and I would do it again.

I enjoyed a soak in the mineral pools and a massage at Casablanca after the race, which was pure heaven.  After the massage, Harold and I went for a drive with my folks and then we had dinner at some divey Mexican Resturant that turned out to be fabulous ( or maybe I was just starving to death).

We drove home Sunday morning after checking out Sun River with my parents.  I want to move there when I grow up, what great place to retire.

I will post my time when they post it on the website. I would recommend this race for a fun weekend in the sun in November.

No, I never did. I was going to do same day registration, but when I saw it was only going to be 5 degrees I decided to bag it. I also didn't want to drive so far across town in the bitter cold with ice pockets still on the road. Thanksgiving was great! It was probably better as well that I stuck close to home, because my MIL had dinner at 11:30 so I didn't have much time in the morning and I may have had to miss the raffle :)

My next race is Painters, got the hotel book and I'm ready to go. I now just need to find out if Craig is going to be able to come with me or if I'm going to be running with a jogging stroller!

5 miles of hiking/running.  I took my brother's dog Izzy home with me last night, they were going to get rid of her, they had her listed on KSL, the kids were upset, so being the good auntie I am I took Izzy home.  Hopefully it will work out, she will be an excellent trail running dog, hopefully she will be a good house dog too. We have super high standards with Odee being the perfect dog. Time will tell.  The running mojo is low, I hope it doesn't last long. Kind of in a funk, maybe a day of shopping will help.

took Odee and Izzy around the park and then did some treadmill miles.  Need my mojo back for tomorrows Oval run.

Treadmill miles at the gym.  How do you all do long runs on the treadmill without going bonkers?

I don't! 7 is a good TM limit for me, only once in my life have I done more. It was on T-day this year as punishment for being a pansy and not getting out in the bitter cold to do a 5k. The only thing that makes it tolerable for me is having company to chat with - not even an ipod makes it worth it!

A chilly hike with Harold and Odee and Izzy!

Total Distance

a walk around the park with the dogs before sun up to beat the dog catcher, a nice walk around Spencer Pond and along the creek with Ardie in the snow and then finished up with some treadmill miles while listening to Outlander.
