Personal: I started running at age 40 (14 years ago!) I am married to Harold, he is a super supportive husband and we enjoy running and biking the trails along the Wasatch Front together. Between us we have 7 children and 9 grandchildren. I am really having fun trying new races in scenic parts of Utah, I am a newbie in the ultrarunning world, I am slow, but love everything about it! I have a lot to learn, but I am enjoying the journey. Favorite Blogs: |

I have come up with 3 health minded goals for 2010 that I am going to post to keep me honest and report on daily for my benefit. I thought I would avoid saying that I would give up certain things forever because that is unrealistic for me. I am trying to make it real simple so I can keep this up for a whole year.
1. drink 100 oz. of water a day
2. one green smoothie a day ( my smoothie recipe is 3 handfuls of spinach, 2 handfuls of mixed frozen berries, a half of a frozen banana and enough OJ to get the consistancy right) This gives me over 6 servings of fruits and vegetables in one drink.
3. 2 hours of exersize a day at least 6 days a week.
Last year my average miles per week was 30. This goal should bump that up a knotch. I would like to do a race a month, and will shoot for that, but I may do some of them as a bandit, because I don't need another t-shirt and I don't race for a "time", and I am too cheap. It is kind of fun for me to pick a local race, start the race early and run the course for fun, just to get the miles in with a group of people. I find in a race setting I do push myself alittle more, so that would be my meager attempt at speed work. My ultimate goal is endurance and distance so that I will be stronger and better prepared for the Pony Express 50 miler in Oct.
I am still in the process of making up my 2010 Race Schedule, but here is what I have so far.
Jan.- Painters Half Marathon
April- (SLC Marathon-as a bandit, probably the last 13 miles)
April- Red Mountain 50K
Aug.- Park City Marathon or Jordonelle triathlon
Oct. St. George Marathon
Oct. Pony Express 50 miler
Today was great, I did a 2 hour and 10 min snow shoeing trip with my dear hubby and our good friends Kim and John.
I had my very yummy green smoothie and am working on my water.
Day # 1 is going well. | |
| | Harold and I did a 4 mile hike up on the Pipeline with Odee. We took our snow shoes, but didn't need them, the trail was packed down, we just used our shoes with screws in them. | |
| | So far my New Year's resolutions are all being met! If I can do 4 days, I can do a week! I got up early and did 2.40 on the treadmill and then took off with Ardath and Jeff on a great snow shoeing outing up at Suncrest. We hiked along a ridge and could look down into Utah County and Salt Lake. Pretty cool. | |
| |
I went to the spa to work out, and didn't eat before I left. I did a mile and half on the TM and then went to muscle-up, I felt pretty weak at muscle-up and couldn't lift as heavy as normal, I know better, but I was trying to be tough and cut back on my calorie intake. DUMB. Tonight I will go the the gym and get in a half hour of cardio to get my 2 hours in.
Did the treadmill tonight. I got my 2 hour goal in.
| | I went to the Olympic Oval and ran with Gary this morning. We loved it and are going to do it every Wed. until we get decent weather. I got 10 miles in. I treated myself to In and Out. I got a Cheeseburger protein style, 320 calories, AWESOME! But, I got the fries too, thinking they are not very greasy and they were 400 calories, DANG! Next time I will not be getting the fries. | |
| |
Muscle-up this morning, had to dash out of class to get home for a busy day of work. I will take out Odee out later this afternoon for a walk to get in my 2 hours.
Have a great day!
PS I have been spot-on with my New Years goals! Pretty good huh? 6 days. lol!
| |
Okay, it has been one week of 2010, I did pretty darn good with my New Years Resolutions, but have decided I need to tweak them a bit.
Goal #1 and #2 will remain the same.
1- drink 100oz. of water a day
2-drink one green smoothie a day
#3 is changing, instead of 2 hours a day 6 days a week, I am changing it and giving myself the option of one hour of intense training or 2 hours of a moderate work out, I found myself not pushing very hard knowing I had to stay in the gym 2 hours. We will give this a try next week, I am thinking it will encourage me to really sweat and get the work out over with. I need options and flexibility.
| | 5 miles on TM this morning | |
| |
I am hiking with Ardath today but I thought I would go over to the gym and try and do one 10 minute mile, I haven't tried that in awhile. I am happy to say I can still do it! I need to do that more often. I will post my hiking miles when I get back.
Hiked with Ardath up in Millcreek Canyon, put in at Birch Hollow, hiked up to Elbow Fork and down the road to the car. It really is a beautiful day when you can get above the smog.
| |
I think it is just muscle up today, unless Harold is up for a cardio work out tonight.
Have a great day everyone!
| |
I picked up Gary and we went to the Oval. My goal was 11 and I did 12 miles! Nice and easy. We are going to keep this up all winter, it will be my long run of the week. Gary and I were there almost 21/2 hours, we are going to increase our time by 15 min. each each week until we are up to 6 hours. That should have us ready for our Red Mountain 50k in April!!
I had an In and Out Cheeseburger protein style afterwards. 320 calories, no frys and no soda! I also had a muscle milk after my run. I am really trying to drop afew more pounds before Painters. I CAN DO THIS!!!!!
| |
After my 12 miler yesterday and a game of raquetball ball with Harold last night, the thought of muscle-up did not sound very appealing. I ended up doing an easy 30 min. on the bike while reading Three Cups of Tea and then doing a very relaxing yoga class. It was a good choice.
| | I ran over to the gym and did one quick mile on the eliptical machine, Fridays are busy. Harold and I are planning to work out at the the new Newport Spa later this afternoon that just opened up in Alpine to support my friends Rusty and Marcie Owens. | |
| | I wish I could sleep in, I was wide awake at 5:00am and laid in bed until 6:30 and finally decided I may as well put in acouple TM miles. I did 2 miles at the rec center and then Harold and Odee and I did the loop up Millcreek from Birch Hollow to Elbow Fork and down the road. It is a good thing the mountains are so close, if I didn't get above this crappy air acouple times a week I would go looney. | |
| | Kim and I did a hike from the Orson Smith trailhead to Eagle's Nest trail, we didn't make it to the top due to a time crunch, but had a nice time anyway. | |
| | It is snowing out, I think I have the winter blues. I did muscle up but bailed out 10 miniutes early, I am thinking of climbing back into bed. 3 more days until we head out to St. George and then on to the beach house, I am not sure I can make it that long. I need sunshine and warmth. | |
| | Today was my Oval day, I did 10 miles with Gary. Sat. is the half marathon in St. George, I am not really "ready" but I will get thru it, I have got to start my 2010 race schedule, may as well do it in Jan. I feel like I am in pretty crappy shape, but I have done races in crappier shape, so whatever.... Is anyone else worried about the weather? I am not concerned about running in bad weather, just the drive down. | |
| |
Is anyone nervous about the drive to St. George? This is killing me, I may have to back out.
I didn't do muscle-up today because if we do get to St. George I don't want to be stiff.
I am so bummed about this weather, I feel like heading down and then getting a hotel along the way if it gets too ugly. What are you doing???
| | 3 miles on the eliptical and indoor track, very wimpy, I am bummed about the storm and our change of plans. We are bailing out on the half marathon and flying to California for a week. I can't believe more of you aren't bailing, it sounds like the storm is going to be really bad down south. Drive safe everyone and I will be anxious to read your race report while sitting on my lounge chair on the beach. |
| | Harold and I chickened out on driving to St. George for the half marathon, the storm made me nervous. We ended up driving to the beachhouse Sat. morning. It is beautiful down here, the storm has passed and it is warm and sunny. I got up this morning and did 11 miles along the beach to Dana Point and then did a few little trails in the area and then ran back to the beach house at Capistrano Bay. Tonight after dinner Harold and I will walk along the beach for 2 miles so I can get my 13 miles in. | |
| |
Harold and I got up and did a 2 mile walk along the beach and then drove over to Dana Point with Julie and Paul and walked along the coast in search of a cave that Julie heard about. We have been coming here for over 20 years and never knew about this cave. It was fun exploring, we saw lots of sea critters and shells along the way.
My son lives at the top of Emigration canyon and said he has 3 feet of snow, bless his heart. It is beautiful here.
I got an email from Davy Crockett, looks like the Pony Express is open for registration now. I am excited to sign up and have it to look forward to for the next 9 months.
| |
Spent the night with my cousins in St. George on the drive home from California and had a wonderful visit. We did 3 mile hike in Snow Canyon before heading home.
Tomorrow I need to get busy on my training, I feel like I have let myself go. I have 9 months to get ready for the Pony Express and I plan on doing it on my own without the help of bootcamp.
| |
I am back from my trip. I need to shift gears, and I am so not ready, thank goodness it is Friday and I have Sat. and Sun. to get my head on straight. I picked up the Eat Clean recipe book while in California and am really going to try doing my meals from that book. It is what I have been searching for, a good recipe book with SIMPLE healthy ingredients. I told Harold things are changing in this house, he can keep all his chips and cookies and ice cream, but the meals WILL be healthier. I am on a mission to get ready for a strong 2010 race year. My first race is the Red Mountain 50K April 24, I have time to do this up right, but I need to start TODAY! To get to my 12 pound goal by my 55th birthday I need to drop 1.71 pounds a week. It is a very reasonable goal!
I started my morning out with a 2 mile eliptical session, hopefully I can do something else today, but I am playing catch up in the salon. Be patient with me, I am going to be rambling alot and talking myself into better nutrition and better workouts.
| | 5 TM miles this morning, now off to Huntsville to play in the snow! |
| |
This morning I did a quick TM run. I did 1.20 miles at a10:00 mm pace. That is good for me. Now off to go snow shoeing, I will post my miles later.
We hiked on the trail that started near the Little Dell golf course. I think it is called Alexander Springs or something like that. Ardath had been there before, it follows a river, we didn't see another person on the trail. There are alot of beaver dams but we couldn't see them because of the snow. I am looking forward to hiking it in the summer. We got so hot we were peeling off several layers, blue sky, it was awesome.
| | muscle up today, felt whimpy after taking a week off, funny what a week will do. | |
| | Today is usually my Oval day, but Julie is doing a presentation today about her Stroke Recovery Center she is trying to get going and so I am going to the Oval tomorrow. I did a little run around the park with the dog and then up to Bywater Park, I am feeling like I need a some motivation. Do any of you know of a half marathon in Feb? I am dragging. | |
| | Had a great time at the Oval with Gary. We both have Ipods, so we chat on the way to the Oval and then zone out to our books on tape. I am listening to Girl with the Pearl Earring. It is good, I am enjoying the distraction. Today, we saw Russia, Norway, France and the USA speed skaters practicing for the Olympics. Very exciting!!! | |
| |
I had to take Harold to work this morning, so I didn't get my workout in until almost 7:00pm. I went over to the spa and did 30 min. on the eliptical and 30:00 on the bike. I do not like working out at night, but was proud of myself for getting it done!
Oh, and I wanted to say, I felt great this morning after my 14 miler yesterday, no soreness at all. That made me happy. I am getting there, slowly but surely. |
| |
A short walk with Odee and Harold thru the park and then a short treadmill session at the spa.
I am thinking of Ardath today as she runs her half marathon in Pasadena, where we both grew up. She is a tiger. This is her 3rd half marathon this year! Oh, and she is 68 years old, she is one amazing lady!!
Off to prepare healthy snacks and soup for the Super Bowl! Thanks Kelli for the recipe. I am making white bean chili with her tomato dressing!!!!
| |
| | Ran outside for the first time in a while. Down to the Cottonbottom and then up to the mouth of BCC and home. | |
| | a great work out at muscle up and a quick mile on the treadmill afterwards | |
| | Woo hoo! 15 miles at the Oval. Finished the Girl with the Pearl Earring and then listened to IZ and dreamed of running in Hawaii! | |
| | oh I am stiff! I think it is both from the 15 miler and muscle-up on Tue. I had a hard time at muscle-up this morning, I am really looking forward to yoga later this morning, this teacher does a very gentle class with alot of stretching, just what I need, and then I will hunker down in the house and work the rest of the day while it storms. | |
| |
I took Maurine to the airport, and then did a short run up to Bywater Park, I was planning on more, but it was snowing and I wasn't in the mood for that crap, so I came home and Harold and I took Odee for a walk in the park, we both slipped on ice like acouple of geezers, Harold caught himself and I went down on my fanny. I am ready for spring.
We are celebrating Valentines Day tonight, Market Street Grill and then the new Valentines Day movie.
Happy Valentines Day!!!
| |
a run in the rain, NO FUN, ran to Holladay Blvd. and 13th East and had Harold pick me up.
|
| |
Ran up to La Caille and back.
Have a great day! | |
| |
Not feeling so hot, not sick, just BLAH..... one of those days where I would like to just escape for a day. I will pretend like I am taking a recovery day and sound all positive in preparation for my 16 miler tomorrow, but it is really a bold face lie.
| |
Woo hoo!!! I did 17 instead of the planned 16! I downloaded Eat, Pray, Love. I was prepared to not like it, but I have heard so much about it that I thought I would try it and I was surprised that I enjoyed it so much, maybe because I had no expectations. Whatever the case, it kept me interested and time flew by and I felt awesome. Ernie joined us today, but I didn't visit much due to the great audio. It is just nice to have their friendly faces there and to wave to each other as one of us passes by the other. Great morning! Now I need to get to work.
I made a mistake and did 18 miles!
| |
I was happy to wake up to a body that felt great! No stiffness at all after my 17 miler. Today is my muscle-up day and yoga.
| |
| |
This morning I took Odee over to the Millcreek pond and walked/ran for 2 1/2 miles. I love the new bridge, I know I will be spending alot of time there. Odee loves chasing the ducks. I came home, did an appt. and then went over to the spa and did 2 1/2 miles on the treadmill. I did mostly a fast walk so I could enjoy listening to my audio book.
Tonight is a GNO with my girls and cousins at the Cheesecake Factory to celebrate my Jana's birthday. Tomorrow Fiddler on the Roof at the Hale theater, then a spa day with my girls on Monday. I feel like singing that Black Eyed Peas song, "Today's going to be a good day"! Except I guess I should say weekend instead.
Have a great weekend my fast running buddies!!!
Love and Kisses your slow running but happy granny runner |
| |
Harold and Odee and I took a short little hike up East Canyon.
I am happy to report I have run at least 30 miles a week for the last 3 weeks. I will try and up it a bit next week. I think I am on target for my 50k in April.
| |
Quick post. 3 treadmill miles, 4 1/2 trail miles with Ardath and Odee on the Pipeline. A Spa day with my girls.
I would say that is a perfect day!
| | I did muscle up this morning. Strength training is not my favorite, but I know it is so important the older you get, so I am really trying to stick with this. I am hoping to get out for a few miles with Odee this afternoon over at the Old Mill pond. | |
| |
I ran out at the Oval by myself this morning. Ernie and Gary went out of town. It was alittle lonesome, but I had a new book on tape to listen to and it was really good, The Associate by John Grisham. 17 miles went by pretty well, the last mile was not fun at all. I am not quite sure how many miles I should work up to for my 50K in April. Maybe 25 miles? I guess that sounds like a good number. I am not one to be very specific in my training. If I take this stuff seriously it wouldn't be as much fun!
I need to learn to add, I did 19 miles not 18!!!!!! Last week I did 18 not 17! Good news for me.
| | Okay, good news, my 19 miler yesterday did no damage, I feel great this morning! It is nice to know I am making some good progress. Today is a day off of working out. I would have liked to have gone to muscle up, but I have a super busy day, so I will enjoy a recovery day. | |
| |
I did my version of speed work on the treadmill this morning. I decided that trying to have unrealistic goals keep me from trying at all, so I did 2 min. at 3.8 and 2 min. of 6.1 and kept that up for 2 miles. It was pretty easy, but I will increase time and speed slowly.
Have a wonderful weekend! No injuries! |
| | Short walk with Julie and the dogs to the Old Mill pond. Ziggy got a bazillon burrs in her hair and we spent a half hour cutting them out with sissors. Then I ran from my house down to Winco in Midvale where Julie was shopping. | |
| |
I found the best place to trail run in the winter today, I wish I had figured this out years ago. I LOVED IT! Ardie and I parked at the top of Gaurdmans Pass where they block off the road for the winter and hiked up to the point you can look over into Park City. Blue skies, warm sun, beautiful views and of course killer company. I think Ardie is reading this, thank you Ardie for this great day and every monday we are together, it is one of the highlights of my week! I ended up running down half of the way, it was great trail running, you sink into the snow about an inch and have to watch your footing with all the tracks from the snowmobiles ( we only saw two snowmobiles thank goodness, Mondays are so quiet in the mountains) They stink, we could smell the exhaust as they pasted us. Stupid machines.
I want to get Gary or Maurine to do this route and run down into Park City. I need to make a plan and soon!!
| |
I did muscle-up this morning and then did a spinning class. I have not done that in years, the first time I did it, it about killed me so I have been afraid to go back. My mom spins twice a week, so I thought I should give it another try. Now that I am older and wiser I have no problem taking it easy, I actually got off the bike 3 times to stretch. I only went 14 miles, I noticed the older woman next me ( she looked like she was in her 70's) had done over 19 miles. So what do I say about that? Who cares!? That's what I say! I am all into baby steps. I gave myself 5 miles because I was working hard for one hour and I usually run 5 miles in one hour. However, I was using different muscles and this work out was much harder than a 5 mile run.
Mom, if you are reading this, are you impressed? You go mama! I hope I can spin when I am your age!
| | Today was supposed to be a 20 miler, but I bailed out at 11. I was tired and my knees were feeling alittle achy and weak and I missed not having Gary and Ernie there for the second week in a row. I am thinking I am about done with my trips to the Oval, it has been a great place for my winter long runs, but the good weather is about here and I am ready to be outside again. I am taking it easy today and will try and get my 18-20 miler in next Wed. | |
| |
Odee and I did alittle run at the Old Mill pond and then I did spinning again. It was fun, I didn't get off the bike once. The 70 year old lady next to me still kicked my butt. She did 24 miles and I did 14. She has only been spinning one month. My goal is to catch up to her! It is a real tough work out!
Have a great weekend! | |
| |
Got up early and did a speed workout at the rec center at 5:30 this morning. I am hoping I am brave enough to drive up to Zermatt with my daughter for a cooking class. I am a wimp when it comes to snowy roads.
Happy Friday! | |
| |
I hiked this morning with Harold, Gary, Ernie and my daughter Jana. We went and hiked along Gaurdsman's Pass, the same hike I did with Ardie Monday, except this time there was tons of new snow to track thru, we should have had snowshoes, it was super burley. I thought I was going to die laughing watching Jana, she is out of shape and was cracking me up, she thought we were going on a little wimpy hike, not a 3 hour trek thru deep snow. It was a great work out. We had lunch afterwards at the Silver Fork Resturant. I am not sure Jana will ever hike with me again.
Woohoo! Over 40 miles this week!!
| | I went snow shoeing with Ardath. I was really dragging, I felt tired and stiff from my Sat. hike and my 40 mile week. I think I am going to have this week be a recovery week and back off a bit. | |
| | Muscle-up and spinning today! I hope you all have a great day! | |
| | I did 15 miles at the Oval with Gary today, I told myself I am backing off a little this week, so I guess I will be fine with that, my plan was to do 20, but I am listening to my tired body that said, "take it easy old girl!" so I did. I hope I will be ready for my 50K next month, I don't think I will be as ready as I was 2 years ago. | |
| | Muscle up and spinning. I think the spinning is a great addition to my crosstraining. The older lady said, " it gets easier every time doesn't it?" Not really. | |
| |
I took the whole weekend off, it was a nice break! Harold and I took Odee for a walk in Tanner Park Sat. before the snow hit, but it was short and not really worth blogging about.
Today I went to gym and a did 2 miles of speed work and then Ardie and I went to Park City and had a beautiful walk along the marathon course around the Swanner Reserve. She took me to lunch afterwards for an early birthday lunch at Squatters. Pretty stinkin nice!!!!
| | Muscle up and spinning today! Now off to another birthday lunch! Woo hoo! | |
| | Today was a little discouraging. I went to the Oval with Gary, and had a great book on tape to listen too, but I felt tired and my legs felt weak and achy, not really painful, just like old lady legs that are completely gooey and out of shape. Ugh! The thought of running my 50K in 5 weeks sounds pretty scarey. I hope I can improve my fitness level alittle by then, or it isn't going to be very fun. | |
| | Today I did muscle-up, spinning and had a 2 mile hike around Tanner Park with Julie, Ziggy and Odee. I am ready for a nap now. | |
| | I have been sick all weekend. It was so nice to get up and plod in this beautiful sunshine. Some good old slow ultra miles. I ran from my house up to the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon and tried to go up the Little Cottonwood trail but ran into ice after just a short distance, so I ran back down Little Cottonwood Road and past La Caille and home for 9 miles. I feel like taking Odee and going for a hike up the canyon, but I decided to do some yard work instead. Spring is here! Happy Days! | |
| | Muscle up and spinning, I made it 18+ miles today, I guess I am getting used to it a bit! Great cross training for sure! | |
| | 9 miles on the Parkway with Gary and Ernie, I should have done more but the tank was running on LOW!!!! It was gorgous outside. | |
| | Only time to do muscle-up and one mile around the pond with Odee, off to beautify the world! LOL! | |
| | Woke up to a big storm! It is really coming down, huge flakes! Went to the spa and did 2 miles of speedwork on the TM. | |
| | I ran and Harold roller bladed on the Porter Rockwell trail. Odee came too. Lots of folks out today enjoying the sunshine. | |
| | I am trying to kick it up a bit for my race next month. I did 3 miles of speedwork on the TM, took Odee for a walk around the pond and then ran the rest of miles on the Porter Rockwell trail with Ardath. | |
| | Muscle-up, jog around the pond with Odee and spinning. Now off to Zupas with Maurine! |
| | A very slow run around the oval today. Thank goodness for a great book download of Sarah's Key. | |
| |
L A Z Y!!!!! Went to the gym this morning to do an hour long cardio session on the eliptical, did 20 min. and went home. Harold and I walked around the pond with Odee after the snow storm. It was a real kick back kind of day.
Happy Easter Everyone! |
| |
Great run this morning! It was cold, headband and glove cold, but it felt great once we got going. Harold rode his bike along side me which is always nice, it makes me go alittle faster so he doesn't go so slow he falls off the bike. We ran/biked down to the Cottonbottom, past the pond and Old Mill and up to the mouth of BCC and home.
Now off to take the grandkids to go see How to Slay a Dragon!
Oh, and over 40 miles this week! Yahoo!
| | Today should have been my first day volunteering at Red Butte Gardens, but with all the snow I bagged it. Since I had a free morning I took 3 fitness classes at the rec center, muscle-up, track and tone ( a new class where you are running and doing afew exercises) and spinning and decided I would take the 6 week triathlon class that starts up in a week or so. It is from 5:00am to 6:30 four days a week. I think it will be similar to my bootcamp but they won't be calling me names, and it is much cheaper. It is the first time they have offered a tri class at CHRC so it is very reasonable. | |
| |
I am running out of time! My 50K is 17 days away! I feel like a cow! I must drop 10 pounds, I need to take drastic measures! This is going to be my venting page, please feel free to ignore me completly as I am going to get crazy these next 17 days.
I got up this morning and the scale screamed at me! I am at my highest weight in the last few years. I am not sharing that number with you but will report my loss daily for the next 17 days.
This morning I ran 9.36 miles on the JRP with Gary, it was beautiful, we had a nice visit and I am ready for more miles. I need to cut Paul's hair and then do another appt. and then I will get back out and get a few more miles in. I plan to go to the rec center every evening and get at least another short workout in. It stinks to get old, I eat less and better than I used to and still can not seem to drop the weight. HELP! If anyone has any tricks please share. I need to burn more calories and go to bed hungry and onery I guess.
This morning I had a green smoothie before my run. During and after my run I had some home made lowfat healthy little cookies made with quinoa, oats, whole wheat flour and flax seed)
4:00 pm update, I did a short hike with Odee on the Pipeline, bad call, I waded thru at least 6 inches of mud and slush. I ate a banana on the way up in the car. I am hoping to get in an evening work out at the gym. So far my day has been good, I should drop acouple of pounds and then that is where it starts to get really tough.
9:30pm update, I had some turkey speghetti for dinner and then did 20 min. on the stationary bike at the rec center. Today went well, hopefully I can keep this up tomorrow.
| |
I was happy to wake up to a loss of 3.4 pounds, of course that is the easy part, the next 6.6 will be killer, but I feel real determined to do this. I was going to take a tri class, but decided I would just get up at 5:30am on my own and work out, I have become real frugal lately and didn't want to pay for it. I got up at 5:30 this morning and put on my new clip hed headlamp and took off for a run up to BCC and back and then came home and took Odee over to the pond for acouple of loops. I am going to spin this morning also. I really liked going over to the gym last night, it was only for 20 min. but it keeps me focused on this mission and I am not as tempted to sit on the couch and eat chocolate covered pomegrante seeds!
Day #2 down 3.4 and 6.6 to go!
PM update, just got back from doing 20 min. on the stationary bike.
breakfast- green smoothie and 2 of my healthy cookies ( 79 calories each)
lunch- turkey speghetti and an apple
dinner-protein pancakes and scrambled eggs
In my book this is another great day!! My only fault is not enough water, I need to work on that.
| |
I forgot how nice it is to get up before the sun to run and watch the sun come up! I did the same run I did yesterday to the mouth of BCC and back and then took Odee for a 2 loops around the pond.
The weightloss is going well!
Day # 3 down 4.1 pounds and have 5.9 to go! This is the weight I usually get to and then bounce right back up, so anything from this point on is really worth celebrating.
Breakfast- 2 healthy cookies ( 79 calories each)
snack- cottage cheese and pretzels
lunch- green smoothie

I am crazy. Yesterday for an early dinner,( 3:30 in the afternoon), I had a 1/2 of a turkey wrap from Costco and then just ate raw veggies in the evening while playing cards with some friends. They had pizza, I did not have one bite. Yay me. I got up this morning and the scale was up and was really ticked and ate nothing before my run. I met Rachel and Smooth and Kathy and two guys from the blog, I knew I would be slow, but on top of being slow, I was STARVING to death. I always eat before a run. Anyway, I took off with the gang, but lagged behind right from the start and decided to just do 4 miles to reach another 40 mile week. It's all good, it was fun to say Hi and Goodbye! I came home and the scale was still up and I have been SO good. Oh well.
I came home ate some whole wheat cereal and then had the other half my my turkey wrap for lunch and tonight we are taking my girlfriend from Escalante out for Thai food, so I will probably be up tomorrow too. You know I am doing the best I can, and what ever happens with the scale, so be it.
Day #4 total down 3.3 pounds.
It was fun to see you girls!!!!
| | I had a early 5 mile run in the dark around the neighborhood and then came home got a drink and some food and then went and ran up Millcreek Canyon on the road. I parked at the park-n-ride on Wasatch and ran from there. |
| | I just have to say I am so looking forward to heading to St. George next weekend and getting up in the dark to drive up to the top of the Red Mountains and spend the day plodding along a beautiful trail. All day on the trails, with the sun on my back and gorgous scenery and a buffet of food set out for me along the way! I love ultras! | |
| |
I had a charlie horse last night and my leg is still sore, so I did a walk with Odee this morning, I have been tapering alittle early, but oh well, it all feels right. I am going to run from my house to Liberty Park tomorrow and jump into the SL Marathon course. Harold is doing the Bike Tour, that will be my last long run before my 50K next week. |
| |
Harold did alittle bandit ride on the SL bike tour and then dropped me off at the Cottonbottom to do a little bandit run myself. I should have waited an hour, I was way ahead of the first place runner, so did most of it solo, however I did have the police escorting me across the street and aid stations that would make silly comments about how I was in first place. It was not as fun as last year when I jumped in with the mid packers. I will know for next year.
As far as I can tell there were two white guys in the lead and a Kenyan that was in third place, I wonder where all the Kenyans were? It was odd.
| |
6 miles on the Pipeline with Ardie.
Good luck all you Boston runners!!
| |
msucle-up
Today is my first day of volunteering at Red Butte Gardens!
| |
Just a quick little run today, was planning on going further, but it was raining and windy up here. Oh, well, time to taper anyway, all is well.
| |
Got up in the dark and put on my running clothes and it was rainy and windy and so I bagged it. I am not doing muscle-up, I do not want any stiffness during the race.
I am so excited, I found out my parents will be in Southern Utah and they are taking us out for dinner fri. night and watching me as I cross the finish line! That makes this weekend extra fun!!
| Race: |
Red Mountain 50K (31.5 Miles) 07:11:58
Wonderful Wonderful Day!
My alarm went off at 3:50 am and got myself ready, Harold took Gary and I to Ivins to catch the bus to the start. When I did this race two years ago, it was pitch black and I forgot a flashlight, this year it didn't seem as dark, but I was prepared with a headlamp and a flash light, it was interesting to see exactly where we started. It was in Central where the St. George Marathon starts, but we jumped to a dirt trail/road heading west.
I also didn't remember how many hills there were the first 8 miles. It was tough going up and down for so long. After the first 8 miles I got into a comfortable pace and ran with Gary to mile 12 where we hit the paved road. I changed into my running shoes, got a bite to eat and took off, Gary took the time to use the porta potty and I didn't see him again until about mile 29. I had the road to myself until we hit Gunlock and then met up with Harold and Ernie on their bikes.
This year was also different because there were no other slow runners. They took off fast and after a few minutes they were out of sight. Being a 55 year old gal, this didn't bother me in the least, they had aid stations every 3 miles, and guys on 4Wheelers driving around checking on us. I was happy with my dear friend Gary's company for the first 12 miles, and then was happy meeting up with Harold who rode along with me for a good portion of the course.
At mile 18 I ran into a man probably a little younger than me that I had met on the bus, it was his first ultra and he said he was really beat up, I talked to him for a minute and then took off. The man DNFed, Gary never saw him, so I am not sure what happened to him. On the results they didn't mention any DNFs, I don't know if there were any others. They also didn't put any of the runners ages down, I would like to think I was one of the older runners, as I came in last place.
Anyway, I felt really pretty good until about mile 29 and then started to drag, I was happy to have Gary catch up to me. I was really running out gas and I told Harold I will not be able to beat my last years time of 7:18, I guessed I would come in about 10 minutes slower. At mile 30 my parents came driving by which was a nice emotional plus, I didn't even stop to say hi, I just waved and ran on. My game plan this year was to NOT socialize at the aid stations and see if I could shave off a few minutes by doing that, because my fitness level was worse than it was two years ago.
Harold coaxed me on and knowing my parents were at the finish line made me run in, instead of the crawling I would have prefered. I was thrilled when they marked on my bib my offical time of 7:11:58.
I absolutely love this race. The race directors made me feel like I was the queen of the day, they remembered me from 2 years ago and called me by name when I picked up my packet and cheered me on and gave me hugs at the finish. I will be back next year, and hopefully finish a couple minutes faster.
We had a great weekend, dinner with my dad before the race at the Pasta Factory, hot tubbing and swimming after the race, and then a celebration dinner at the Texas Road House for a steak dinner and then a double feature movie at home which I slept thru. I am completely crippled today, but I feel like I have conquered the world. Kinda funny, I came in dead last and had a PR, not too many people can do that! Haha!
There were 16 women doing the 50K, this was a really small race. I think there were 23 men.
| | It has been a week since my 50k, I really enjoyed taking a week off of all exercise, especially since we have had snow most every day and wind. I did a 5 mile run thru the neighborhood, it is still snowing, so it wasn't very enjoyable, my quads are still very tight. I think it will take me acouple of weeks to get back into the swing of things. |
| |
I got up at 6:00am this morning and drove up to the Smiths on Wasatch and Bengal and started my run to the Porter Rockwell trail. Ardie met me in Draper and we ran and chatted for an hour. Great morning, nice to feel the legs are strong and healthy again.
I don't have another race until August. I am going to do the Jordonelle Triathlon with Harold. Ardath reminded me to take it easy and not do such high miles and do more cross training. Good idea. The pool will open the end of the month and I will start doing laps to get ready for the tri.
| | I was happy not to have any stiffness from yesterday's run. I just did muscle-up today. | |
| |
I did the Old Mill loop and acouple of extra trips around the pond.
Happy Weekend! I am going to the Beehive Bazaar and my son's bike stunt show today!!
| | Ardie and I did the Old Mill route, it rained the first half and then was clear. | |
| | muscle-up, that's it today. |
| |
Took Odee over the the Old Mill pond ( I found out the real name is Spencer Pond, but I don't know Spencer, so I will continue to call it the Old Mill pond). I came home and dragged my feet, the weather looked so dreary and cold, finally got my sorry butt out the door and did 6 miles along Danish Road and up to Wasatch Blvd. The temp. was great for running, but now I would like a little sunshine thank you very much.
Sat. we leave for Southern Utah for our big family backpacking trip. Peek-a-boo, Spooky and Coyote Gulch. I think I will finally get my sunshine!
| |
What a differance a day makes. Today is gorgous, I should have gone to the rec center for my cross training but went outside and did a nice run to start my day. I am getting all the loose ends taken care of for my back packing trip today.
Happy Thursday! | |
| | I ran from my house over to the rec center and did the CHRC 5K route. Nice morning, I think Spring is finally here. Tomorrow morning we head out off to Torrey and then on to our backpacking trip! | |
| | Fabulous hike into Coyote Gulch with my hubby, dad, daughter and 4 other family members. Paradise. |
| | Hiking thru Coyote Gulch, from the Jacob Hamblin Arch to Coyote Bridge and back. |
| | Hiking out of Coyote Gulch in the late afternoon, after a wonderful 3 days. |
| | Camped at the Peekaboo trail head and woke up early to hike Peekaboo and Spooky. It was nice to beat the crowds. Do not try and do this hike after 10:00am, it is too crowded. |
| |
I got in late last night and didn't write much about my backpacking trip. We had a great time, Coyote Gulch is so beautiful. It was fun to enjoy it with my family. I hope to go down there again soon. My sister-in-law from California decided this is something she really wants to do more of, my hubby really enjoyed it too, we are going to try and see if we can get in another backpacking trip in around the Bryce or Red Canyon area before the summer is up.
I was wide awake at 5:20, so got up and did 6 miles and saw the sun come up. No stiffness or soreness at all after the trip.
| |
Ran up to the mouth of BCC and then took Odee for a walk around the pond.
Have a great weekend. | |
| | muscle up and off to volunteer at Red Butte Gardens! Yay, for sunshine today! | |
| | This is turning out to be a pretty wimpy week. I had bad Charlie Horse last night and was still pretty sore this morning, just took Odee for a walk around the pond. Oh, well..... | |
| |
It is my cross training day, but got up at 5:15 and decided it was going to be a running day, I am glad I am not on a rigid schedule.
| |
| | Got up to run at 7:00am this morning, I think I do better starting earlier and watching the sun come up. |
| | I was going to run with Maurine this morning, but cancelled last night because of the weather report. I got up before 5:00am and realized it wasn't raining so got in a quick 5 miles, it was pretty cold. | |
| |
Ran to LCC, off to help J and P clean their new rental, golf, and grilling burgers in the back yard.
Happy Memorial Day! | |
| |
I was supposed to meet Gary and Ernie at the Park n Ride by Millcreek Canyon, but they got stuck in road construction traffic and told me to go ahead. Odee and I drove to Rattlesnake Gulch and ran the Pipeline to Churchfork and back. Beautiful morning. I saw the guys on my way back.
| | 5 miles, one of them even a 10 min. mile, woo hoo for me, and now packing my bags and heading to the beach house for a week! | |
| | We are in San Juan Capistrano at the beach house, took a bike ride to Dana Point and back. |
| | Ran from the beach house to San Clemente and back. |
| | 4 miles along the coast, hopefully I will be more ambitious tomorrow. | |
| | 4 miles running towards Dana Point and then walking 4 miles with Colleen, I am hoping to get out and walk again this evening. | |
| | 4 miles along Doheny Beach and Capistrano Bay | |
| | 4 mile walk early in the morning in St. George |
| | I drove to the Park and Ride on Wasatch Blvd. next to the Old Mill Golf course and ran Wasatch Bvd. Very little traffic, nice running along the foothills, great views. | |
| | I ran up Bengal across Wasatch and down Fort Union. I ran into my Lisa and acouple of other friends and finsihed up with them, that was fun! |
| |
Same route as Wed, met up with the running chicks and then checked out each other's flower gardens, cute girls.
Good luck Wasatch Back runners!
| |
Lisa and I ran from the mouth of LCC to the Porter Rockwell trail, Harold drove the car to the Draper Park and road south on his bike, nice way to start the day. Now it is off to the Farmer's market and Costco. |
| | Beautiful hike from Mormon Flats towards Big Mountain, a great hike for dogs, Odee was in heaven with all the river crossings and walking thru the streams. Thanks Ardie for the good idea and the diet coke at the Jeremy Ranch Gas station, it isn't hard to make us happy. |
| | I did my Old Mill route, past the Cottonbottom, the pond and up to the mouth of BCC. Feeling a little sluggish, but I think it was due to a funny stomach yesterday and very little food. | |
| | I have felt a little "funny" these last few days, so I took it easy and did a 3 mile hike up Millcreek with Odee. It is so beautiful in the early morning. Ardie gave me money to pay half of an annual pass and the booth hadn't opened up yet, it is burning a hole in my fuel belt. |
| |
Ran up to the mouth of BCC and back.
I have decided to run the Goblin Valley 50K this year instead of the Pony Express 50 miler, I am not up for 50 miles right now and it has been making me crazy thinking about it. Goblin Valley is tons of fun and of course some of you will be there, so it will be a party!!!! Harold can mountain bike part of it, so he is happy too. Now I am getting super excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
| | Decided at the last minute to try the Crest even though we heard it wasn't quite ready. Gary and Ernie joined us to scout out the trail, it was gorgous, it was about 95% clear of snow. I knew the Millcreek road was closed, but I still made plans to have Harold meet us at the parking lot at Big Water, duh...... so we had to run down to the road closure, so there you have it 16 plus miles. Not as much traffic as usual, it is probably because of the road closure. Ernie is a born trail runner, he lead the entire way, he looks like a dear prancing, effortless. Great morning, now off to Snowbird. | |
| |
Kim and I took Odee and Ziggy to dog lake, the dogs were in heaven, Ziggy is a wonderful trail dog, she makes Odee look old and tired. She pranced the whole way, I wish I could put a garmin on her, I bet she did 20 miles. They played in the lake and then we went to Lone Star for fish tacos. Yay for summmer. |
| | Ran thru the neighborhood. | |
| |
Did the Crest trail again with Ernie and Gary and Harold. No snow on the trails. The temp was 36 degrees at the start and it was cool thru the whole run. NICE!
| | I have had a sore throat for the last 3 days, so I am taking it easy. I just mailed in my Goblin Valley 50K registration! Time to get alittle more serious, St. George and GV will be here before you know it! | |
| | Hiked Lake Blanche with Kim and did Lone Star fish tacos after! | |
| | Hiked the Red Pine Trail in LCC with ARdath this morning. | |
| |
Back to muscle-up after taking several weeks off. ouch.
| | Short run with Odee on the Pipeline this morning! | |
| | Hiked to Grandeur Peak with Kim and Odee, saw a bull moose. LOVELY DAY in the wilderness. |
| | ran the Old Mill route, did alot of walking actually, my running mojo is lacking gusto this year. |
| | Had a great run this morning with Maurine, Harold mountain biked. We did the Wasatch Crest. Started at Puke Hill ran to Desolation Lake and down to Mill D. We had a car parked acouple miles down the road to give us a few more miles. The early morning temp was 55 and it stayed nice and cool thru the whole run. | |
| |
great trail run with Ardath, Ziggy and Odee on the Pipeline this morning.
20 min. of swimming laps, that felt fabulous, first time this summer, definitely not the last! |
| | I should have gone to muscle-up, but was not in the mood. Did a little run in the neighborhood and will try and get over to the pool and do afew laps this afternoon. | |
| | I always love to find a new trail. We did Hugh's Canyon to the waterfall. Nice short hike. I actually ran 2 miles before we hiked, to give me 5 miles. | |
| | I actually did a 12 plus mile bike ride with Harold this morning, and did the bike/run conversion, I can not believe how hard it is for me to bike, I wonder if it is my body or in my head. I tried riding with him acouple of days ago and road my bike up 2 miles to the mouth of BCC and told him to go on and I turned around and went home exhausted. Today we rode up to the mouth of BCC and I was fine ( I am actually riding Harold's Kona Mountain Bike, so that makes it a little tougher) anyway, I rode with him along Wasatch Blvd to about 45th South and turned around. It was not that bad, it would be fun to see the differance on a women's road bike. Tomorrow we are going to try and go a little further. Kind of a nice change. |
| | 16 miles on the bike, my bum is so sore. | |
| | Awesome hike to Desolation Lake with Ardie, early morning temp 50 degrees, back in the valley it was 93. | |
| | One mile of barefoot running in the park ( I am reading Born to Run....SO AMAZING!) I loved it! Then a 4 mile hike to the SLC Overlook on the Desolation trail. We saw a rattlesnake on the trail that even rattled for us. Very cool. | |
| | CRAZY!!! Gary and Ernie and I met at Rattlesnake Gulch, about 15 min. into our run I spotted an another rattlesnake in the middle of the trail, I was in front, screamed, swore and then jumped off the trail. The snake slithered away and we kept going. We ran up to Elbow Fork and back. On the way back we took off our shoes and enjoyed the stream at the Churchfork junction. Awesome morning. | |
| | 8 mile bike ride with Dad and Harold down to the San Clemente Pier, then dad treated us to some fancy dancy crepes at a cool little outdoor cafe across from the beach. |
| | 8 mile bike ride with Harold and granny and grandpa down to Dana Point. |
| | ran to Dana Point, Jana and Harold rode their bikes. Then we hiked out to the cave. Now playing on the beach. | |
| | 10 mile bike ride to the San Clemente pier with Jana and Harold | |
| | chilling at the beach house....... |
| | My running mojo is on vacation, 4 little miles to Doheny Beach and back. |
| | 5 miles around the neighborhood. | |
| |
6 miles, along Danish and up to Wasatch Blvd.
Gearing up for a 20 mile trail run Thur! If anyone is interested we are doing the Crest and running down Millcreek Canyon. So far Laurie Pope and her husband is going and Gary. The more the merrier.
| | 3miles on the Pipeline with Odee, Ziggy, Enyo and Jana! | |
| | WONDERFUL RUN! Laurie, Chris, Gary and Chris's brother in law did the Crest this morning. Cool mountain breeze, awesome wildflowers and great company. A perfect morning. | |
| | We had Jana's farewell party last night, she leaves for Hawaii Thur, ate lots of yummy food, was not in the mood to run this morning, but I managed 5 miles and am ready to repent of all the treats I ate last night, and at the beach house, I need to get serious now. | |
| | Hiked to Red Pine Lake with Kim, it was a gorgous day! Red Mango afterwards! | |
| | 6 miles around the neighborhood. Taking Jana to the airport to fly off to Hawaii to go to school now. I am so happy for her! |
| | 5 miles around the neighborhood | |
| | Just a quick note to say my dad is going to run in the Goblin Valley race with me in Oct. He is doing the 25K and I will do the 50K. We have done 3 marathons together and a smaller race at Big Sur, but that was 5 years ago. I think he will love having the "ultra experience"! I am super excited about this!!!!!! | |
| | did the Old Mill loop this morning | |
| | ran at 5:30am this morning, I have a busy day! | |
| | Ran from my house to the mouth of LCC and up the trail a bit and back. | |
| | short run around the neighborhood | |
| |
Ran from my house to Draper along Wasatch, cool and overcast, I could have gone forever but I want to go help Julie and Paul fix their house up.
Have a good weekend folks! One more month to SG!!!!!!
| | ouch! I finally forced myself to go to muscle-up after a couple months break, it was painful. | |
| | Ran along Danish to Wasatch this morning. | |
| | Muscle-up on Tue + 5 hours of massage Wed. = a break today!! | |
| |
Took Odee to the Porter Rockwell trail, he is a pain in the butt on a leash!
Tomorrow, I am doing the Crest and running down the canyon, I hope to get in 18 miles or so!
| |
| | Had a great run on the Crest, it was so beautiful today, nice and cool, the early morning temp was 46. My son Tracey joined me for the first time and did great. We had a group of 8, 3 bikers, 5 runners and Tracey got to Big Water first. Very cool. I hope I can do another fall run before it snows. Laurie and I ran down the Canyon to get the extra miles. | |
| |
up Bengal to Wasatch Blvd and down Fort Union.
I am so excited to be pacing from Lambs to Big Water at the Wasatch 100. Only about 10 miles, so there is no pressure, it will just be a blast. Maurine is doing Brighton to the finish, 25 miles that is brutal. I can't wait!!!!!!!
| | short run up to the Canyon Raquet Club and back |
| | ran up to the mouth of BCC | |
| | hiked with 3 friends in Park City and then went to a fabulous cooking class at the Zermatt Resort! | |
| | My runner I was going to pace had to drop out due to medical problems, so I called Maurine and said we should go run on the course a bit and cheer on the runners. We drove to Big Water up Millcreek and followed the course to the spine above Desolation Lake. We started running at about 3:00. We didn't start seeing runners until after we turned around. Nick was in first place, another Nick in second place and Anthony in third. It was a blast!!! | |
| | Ardie and I hiked in Park City and then hit the outlets. It is fall, beautiful colors and crisp clean air. | |
| | just another run, same old same old, looking forward to SG and GV coming up next month!!!! | |
| | Hiked from Left Fork in Zion towards the Subway, we didn't make it all the way due to a late start, still very fun and beautiful. |
| | Hiked the Narrows, loved it, but I got chilled to the bone, I was the only one out of our party of 6, not sure why my body reacted this way, I actually turned around to come back early. Next time I will have more layers and neoprene soxs. Who would have thought you would be cold with a high in St. George of 99? Crazy. |
| |
4 miles in Corner Canyon with Ardie and Odee. Looks like the fire in Herriman has dyed down alot.
| |
Taper time for St.George! I just did muscle-up this morning!
Kind of funny that we were in St. George last weekend and will be there next weekend and then again afew weeks later for the Mesquite Half. My cousin gave us a key to their "second" home in St. George, it is really nice to have our own little place to get away to. Thank you Shawnie! I think we will be spending alot of time in St. George this winter!
| | 4 miles and 4 massages in Provo, a good workout! | |
| |
a 3 mile taper run/crawl....I am milking this for all it's worth!
| | aaahhhhh.....5 beautiful miles on the Pipeline with Ardie, the colors are gorgous and the air is crisp and cool! 5 more days until St. George!!!! | |
| | 4 taper miles around the neighborhood!!!! Getting excited for SG!!! | |
| Race: |
st. george marathon (26.2 Miles) 05:45:00
This was my 14th St. George Marathon. It is always fun, but I don't have much to brag about this time. I was under trained and over weight. I saw the pictures Harold took and about puked. I really need to get serious about my fitness level and my weight.
I drove down with Maurine and Marcia and had a great time visiting. Since we left in the morning I got to spend about 3 hours at the expo! It was fun running into Smooth and Kelli and few others.
Went to the Pasta Dinner with Maurine and Marsha, it has improved since I last went 10 years ago.
Spent the evening with Harold and some of the grandkids.
I got up at 3:30am and rode up the bus alone but found Maurine and Vic right away. We got to visit with Rachel, Smooth and Teena for afew minute. It was really warm, which is odd, I usually freeze.
Maurine and I ran together for the first 10 or 11 miles, I felt fine, we were in front of the5:30 pace group. At mile 11 the heat started to really bother me and I started to slow down, I didn't see Maurine again.
At mile 15 I ran into Vic and we played leap frog the rest of the way in. After about mile 19 Harold called he said it is 88 degrees, it felt like 108. I could not believe so many people were walking. I saw one guy laying in a tiny piece of shade and someone asked him if he was okay and he said help was coming, acouple minutes later an ambulance came by to get him.
Running the last few miles thru the streets were tough, but I kept moving in fear of going over the 6 hour limit. Thank goodness I made it.
Next year I willl be more prepared and have some of this weight off.
After the marathon we went and played with the grandkids at the pool and then went to the 10 year Banquet. Fun times.
| |
still recovering, water rention, sore legs and must have strained my left ankle, but starting to feel better with each day.
Does anyone know of a good half or full marathon in Dec or Jan? I would like to try and do one race a month.
| | Nice run up to Wasatch Blvd and over to Creek Road. I feel like my body is about back to normal.Yay! | |
| | Ran along Murray Holladay road this morning, nice to have a flat course. | |
| |
Ran the Wasatch Crest with Tracey and two of his girlfriends. We met at the park n ride at 6am and was up the canyon and running by 6:30ish, we wore headlamps and got to the top of Puke hill in time to see the sunrise. Some of trail was covered with an inch or so of snow, the colors were so pretty. I am sure that will be our last Crest run for the season.
My left ankle has bothered me since St. George, maybe I rolled it, not sure, guess I better ice it.
It is so nice to be able to run with my son!!!!!
| | Ardath and I did the hike that was in the Sunday Trib. It is above Jeremy Ranch and called 24-7, fairly flat, it reminded me of the Bonneville Shoreline trail, only looking down on Park City. Very nice. It is always fun to find a new trail. | |
| | just a quick run around the park with Odee and up to Wasatch Blvd. |
| | 2 miles in the park with Odee before the sun came up and then a 5 mile hike up around Twin Lakes and Lake Mary. We had to change trails due to two moose blocking our way. We are such sissys. |
| | No MOJO! I am so bummed I am not on the Pony Express trail running with my friends. I will be thinking about them all day and watching their progress online. Good luck to all of you and next year I will be there!!!! |
| | Ardie and I hiked the Desolation trail to the SLC Overlook. Awesome morning, now lunch with Julie and then chilling the rest of the week and tapering for Goblin Valley. Mom, if you are reading this, tell dad to take it easy this week so he will be fresh for Goblin!!! Love you!!
| |
| | early morning run with Odee around the park and thru the neighborhood | |
| | decided to make bread and carbo load instead of run! LOL! Off to GV tomorrow!!! | |

Heading down to Goblin Valley to do a 50K with my dear husband who has been on way to many running trips, and still is so very supportive! I am so excited to be running with my friends, Laurie, Smooth and Kelli! Harold will be mountain biking with Laurie's husband Chris so he will be having some desert fun too! My training hasn't been very good but this is my 7th ultra, I know I can "git er done"! My PR for a 50K is 7:11, I doubt I can beat it, but we shall see, maybe if the stars are aligned....

Goblin Valley 50K 07:11:00
What a fun weekend! Harold and I took off around 1:00 to head down to
Green River, when we arrived at our cabin at Shady Acres we were
greeted by Smooth and Kelli and then Larry and Scott and 4 of Kelli's
little ones. It was so much fun visiting, we all drove over to the
Senior Citizen's Center for dinner and talked with some of the other
runners and enjoyed a potato bar dinner. There were a lot of runners
from Colorado. After we got into bed, Laurie and Chris came
knocking on our door, so we visited them for awhile and made plans for
our morning ride over to Goblin Valley, about a 45 min. drive. At
6:30 am Kelli, Smooth, Laurie and I drove over to Goblin with Harold,
the rest of the gang were going to sleep in and join us later in the
day. We saw JD at the start and chatted and got some pictures and
then we were off. I stayed with Laurie for most of the first half of
the race, we met a gal from Nebraska and a gal from Logan that we ran
with for a while. The aid stations were great, I was fueled by
Tagalongs ( Girl Scout Cookies) at every station. The weather was
beautiful, nice and cool with cloud cover for the first half of the
race. Nice scenery and more hills than I remember. I swear running is
like childbirth, you forget the hills and remember all the fun and
friends, and the pain is quickly forgotten. I am not very good at checking the pace but when we reached the half way point we had averaged about a 13. something pace. Laurie was feeling great and took off, I would see her once and awhile from a far blazing ahead in her bright pink shirt. After
the turnaround I was pretty pooped, by mile 18 I was trying to talk
myself into dropping out, Chris showed up on his bike at about that
point and gave me a smile and a little coaxing and then Harold showed up
on his bike at mile 20. I told him I was thinking of dropping and he
talked me out of it, he rode by my side until we were almost at the
parking lot of the campground. At this point I was really dragging then
this beautiful girl came running towards me looking so strong and it
was my Kelli!!! I could have bawled, I found out that she finished in
3:59 and then went back on the course to run Smooth in and then back
again to run me in. I was able to pick up the pace with her
encouragement. Kelli is a running angel!!!!!!! The last
mile running thru the Goblins was tough, it was like a maze running
back and forth following the path of pumpkins that were set up to mark
the trail, some of Kellis's kids and Laurie's kids were playing and
following us around. I kept telling Kelli I would love to beat 7:11,
she was pushing me as hard as I could go, at the very end Laurie and
her friend came and grabbed my arms and pulled me up the final hill and
I crossed the finish line at exactly 7:11 (point something) I guess
the word is out the course was short because of the rainstorm, but
whatever I ran the Goblin Valley 50K in 7:11 and I'm sticking to it!!!! Thank
you Kelli, Smooth and Laurie for such a fun weekend, and of course your
cute families!!!! Harold was awesome. Thanks sweetie, if you are
reading this! I love you!

| | Odee walked Ardath and I around the Old Mill Pond a few times. My body feels really quite good! I am looking forward to my half marathon in Mesquite in 4 weeks, after doing a marathon and a 50K with in the last 3 weeks this will be a treat! I am going to call and schedule my massage at the Casablanca today!
| |
| | I got a free entry to the SG half marathon in the mail....wierd huh? I think they were picking random names from the marathon. I wasn't planning on doing it since I will be down that way in Nov. and then again in April, but we will see. Did any of you get a free pass? I did gentle yoga with the senior citizens today at the rec center, it was nice to ease back into life, but it was really too gentle for me. Then I did 10 min. on the eliptical. Baby steps.
| |
| | Woke up to 4 inches of snow, went to the gym and did 25 min. on the eliptical machine and then for a short run with Odee. I feel like my recovery is going well. I wish I could jump in the car and go to St. George and do the Snow Half this weekend with Smooth, it would be so much fun, but dang it all the crap I can't! I will just have to be patient and wait for the Mesquite Half in Nov.
| |
| | I finally got myself over to muscle-up, not fun, but done! | |
| | got up at 5:30 to run with Odee. I am thinking of signing up for Painters since I got a free coupon. Who else is going? | |
| | Ardie and I ran on the Porter Rockwell Trail this morning. 40 degrees is perfect for running.
|
| | Where oh where did my running mojo go? A lame walk/run around the Old Mill Pond. |
| | Muscle-up and 3 treadmill miles. I think I might do a lot of TM miles this winter, it keeps me honest on sticking with a decent pace. Just bought tickets to Hawaii in Feb to visit my daughter and do the Aloha Run!!
|
| | 5 miles before the sun came up! Julie and I and some of the Poly relatives are trying Hot Hula tonight, it looks like a Polynesian version of Zumba.
|
| | 3 miles in the neighborhood. Hot Hula last night was a blast!!! I hope they start classes close to me or I will be driving across town to go! Loved it!
|
| | 5 miles in the dark and rain. Glad to be done. |
| | It has been a bad week, almost lost Odee after he had an accident falling down the stairs, in fact we were at the vet's office ready to put him down and he came around and started to walk, so we brought him home and are trying to nurse him back to health. Any way 3 slow miles, with out any zip.
| |
| | Nice run along the Pipeline with Maurine, snowy and beautiful! |
| |
a little walk with Odee in the park and then some treadmill miles
did a 3 mile run up to Bywater Park and back this afternoon, the weather cleared up and I needed some fresh air.
| |
| | muscle-up and 2 miles at the gym |
| | a quick run at the gym this morning |
| | 2 miles at the gym Tomorrow we head off to Mesquite for the half marathon. Sure glad I signed up for the half and not the full!!!
| |
| | We had a wonderful time in Mesquite, thanks to my awesome friends and family. Ardie was there with her hubby, Laurel was there with her hubby ( from Orange County) and Gary and Ernie and last but not least my dear parents. We arrived Friday and picked up our bib numbers and tee shirts and visited with everyone. Had fun gambling, playing the penny slots and stayed up late because Ernie had a hot machine and I could hardly break away from the excitement. My parents took us out to dinner at Katherines at the Casablanca, that was probably the nicest pre-race meal I have ever had. They spoil us rotten and are so much fun! Ardie, Laurel, Stan and I got on the bus at 6:30am. We huddled around in the wind for about a half hour before the race started. We had horrible strong head winds the whole way, which made the race really difficult. I enjoyed running thru the desert, but hated the wind, good thing it wasn't too cold. I felt like I was working real hard, but moving like I was in slow motion, sometimes the wind would be so strong it would make my foot bump into my other foot and about trip me over. The results have not been posted, but my garmin said 3 hours, but my distance showed 13.38, so I am hoping my time was 2:something, but whatever..... we had a great time, and I would do it again. I enjoyed a soak in the mineral pools and a massage at Casablanca after the race, which was pure heaven. After the massage, Harold and I went for a drive with my folks and then we had dinner at some divey Mexican Resturant that turned out to be fabulous ( or maybe I was just starving to death). We drove home Sunday morning after checking out Sun River with my parents. I want to move there when I grow up, what great place to retire. I will post my time when they post it on the website. I would recommend this race for a fun weekend in the sun in November.

| | 4 miles at the gym, felt pretty good, the half marathon soreness is all worked out. |
| | burrrr.... 3 treadmill miles |
| |
5 miles at the Olympic Oval, planned on doing more, but went alone and got bored.
I decided to stop being so wimpy about the cold and ran up to Bywater Park and back, still only 2 miles, so I guess I am still a big woose.
| |
| | Ardie, Jeff and I snowshoed around the park, we had about a foot of fresh snow so it was a good work out. In the afternoon, I did the treadmill.
| |
| | 10 miles at the Olympic Oval with Gary. I am listening to Outlander on my ipod. There is no way I could run on an indoor track with out a good book. |
| | Muscle up and 3 spinning miles. If you are interesting in running at the Olympic Oval this winter, I am trying to get a group of 10 together so we can each get a discounted year long pass for $20 each. Let me know as soon as possible if you are interested. It is a bargain!
|
| | I joined Planet Fitness today. It is only $10 a month and no contract. My CHRC membership was up and was feeling broke, so thought I would try PF through the winter. I did a 30 minute circuit training program and 2 miles on a crosstraining machine. I think it will be a nice change for now. |
| | 3 indoor miles. We still have $20 passes for the indoor track at the Olympic Oval if you are interested. We are purchasing them Monday. So call me if you are interested. 801-943-1571.
| |
| | 5.5 miles on the TM and circuit training. |
| | 4 miles (treadmill and eliptical) | |
| | Ran at the Olympic Oval today with Gary and Laurie. | |
| | 3.5 treadmill miles, and Hot Hula with Julie tonight! | |
| | 5 miles of hiking/running. I took my brother's dog Izzy home with me last night, they were going to get rid of her, they had her listed on KSL, the kids were upset, so being the good auntie I am I took Izzy home. Hopefully it will work out, she will be an excellent trail running dog, hopefully she will be a good house dog too. We have super high standards with Odee being the perfect dog. Time will tell. The running mojo is low, I hope it doesn't last long. Kind of in a funk, maybe a day of shopping will help. |
| | took Odee and Izzy around the park and then did some treadmill miles. Need my mojo back for tomorrows Oval run. | |
| | Today was my Olympic Oval day. I got in 12 miles. Gary is my regular running buddy, but today Paul came too, he did well, hopefully he will be joining us every Wed.!! | |
| |
Treadmill miles at the gym. How do you all do long runs on the treadmill without going bonkers? 2 miles in the evening.
| |
| | A chilly hike with Harold and Odee and Izzy! |
| | a walk around the park with the dogs before sun up to beat the dog catcher, a nice walk around Spencer Pond and along the creek with Ardie in the snow and then finished up with some treadmill miles while listening to Outlander.
| |
| |
interval training and a little spinning.
|
| | 10 extra slow miles at the Oval, all I could think about was what I wanted to eat when I was done and doing a mental note of all the last minute Christmas prep. I need to do. oh, well. |
| | 2 wimpy miles on the treadmill! Merry Christmas! | |
| |
12 oval miles, it was fun, Chris was there testing someone from the army and Julie and Paul came by too
|
| | 4 treadmill miles and 30 min. of weight training. | |
