Personal: I started running at age 40 (14 years ago!) I am married to Harold, he is a super supportive husband and we enjoy running and biking the trails along the Wasatch Front together. Between us we have 7 children and 9 grandchildren. I am really having fun trying new races in scenic parts of Utah, I am a newbie in the ultrarunning world, I am slow, but love everything about it! I have a lot to learn, but I am enjoying the journey. Favorite Blogs: |

ogden marathon (26.2 Miles) 00:05:28 | | This is the first time for me to run the Ogden Marathon, I had signed up to do the Red Mountain 50k the next Sat. so my plan was to take off walking as soon as I got off the bus and do a lot of walking and take it easy and use this as a training run for my 50K. I ended with a time of 5:28 and felt great. I took it slow enough that I had no soreness the next day. Ogden was a beautiful course, I think it is my second favorite run, with St. George being my favorite, this will be a regular one for me! |

Red Mountain 50K (31 Miles) 00:07:18 | | The Red Mountain 50K was an amazing race. Beautiful scenery, great organization and perfect weather. I loved every minute of it. I was happy to finish feeling strong and happy, and there were 3 people behind me! |
| | I am still recovering from doing the Ogden Marathon May 17 and the Red Mountain 50k on May 24. My husband Harold and I went for a 5 mile walk from my parents beach house in San Juan Capistrano to Dana Point with my father, Owen Olpin and did a little bird watching a long the way, we identified 14 birds on our walk. I am feeling pretty good, but plan to walk for the next few days and enjoy the beach and start running when I get back to SLC on Wed. | |
| | I don't know if you can count a bike ride on this training blog, but I just did! I guess we can make these our own and that was my morning, I am staying at my folks fabulous beachhouse and a bunch of us rode our bikes to Dana Point and back. It was pretty laid back, I was on my mom's cruiser bike. I am still in the recovery mode, it is nice and relaxing, but I will be ready to hit the trails when I get back to SLC. Hopefully the snow will melt soon, I am dieing to get on the Wastach Crest trail!!!!! | |
| | I am finally back running again, and it feels great. It has been 9 days since Red Mountain, I ran a nice slow 4 miles on the beach. I ran down by the water where the sand is hard, it was a perfect way to get my legs moving again and scenery I don't get in SLC! I am excited to get focused again on my running when I get back home. I have missed running with all my running friends! |

Rain, taking the day off! |
| | This morning part of our marathon training group, "the running chics" got together for a 3 mile power walk, it was raining so we went to the Cottownwood Heights Rec center to walk. We wanted to take it easy because we are doing our long run tomorrow (9 miles). Desiree, Jenny, Lisa and Erica are training for their first marathon and I am their Mother Hen, showing them the way! It has been so much fun with these younger girls, I think that training with them is going to improve my time and I will be a better runner by trying to keep up with these gals who are 10 and 20 years younger than me. Our little group is very dedicated and we have more fun than we should be allowed to have on these long runs, time zips by, lots of laughs and great conversation! I can't wait for 5:00a tomorrow, we are going to run to Mimi's and have breakfast, now that school is out and young moms don't have to get their kids out the door. | |
| | This morning our running group got out on the road at 5:00am and did a nine mile route weaving thru Cottonwood Heights and ending up at Mimi's in Murray. It was one of those perfect runs, great weather, great company and feeling the thrill of being pushed just a little harder than normal and yet feeling strong at the finish. Our average pace was 11:55. | |

I was planning on taking a day off of running after my 9 miler yesterday, but after a email message from Laurie and Sasha mentioning the 6 day a week running program, I went out for a little 2 mile run. Usually after a 9 mile run I am fine, but my run with my friends was at a pace a little faster than my normal training run and I felt some tenderness in my knees. I hope that as I continue to run at this pace my knees will get used to it, I would really like to improve my time. So today makes 3 days of running in a row, only 3 more to go. I need to go check out Lauri's blog and see if she made it.
| | I took Odee, my dog, on a 2 mile run thru Butler Park this moring, I usually don't run on a Sunday, but I am going to give this "6 days straight running" a try. I always like a new goal. My knees are still a little tender so I kept it to a short run, I think they are a little better than yesterday. I just noticed my ultrarunning best buddy is now on the blog, everyone welcome Tarzan, she is awesome! | |
| | This morning Lisa picked a route. We parked at the The Store on 6200 S. and did a loop, it was a flat course and we ran it at an average pace of 11:03 minutes per mile. My knees felt good. We keep improving our time with every run. Running with a group is helping me with my speed, and it is so much more fun! | |
| | Tue. and Thurs. are usually my crosstraining days, but I have decided to add to that and try for 6 days of straight running as well So, this morning I went to muscle up over at the rec center and then went out for a 2 mile run. The first mile was all up hill to Bywater Park and then turned around and ran home. My time was 22:21 min. and it was an average pace of 11:04. At 10:30 I am going to Yoga with Ardath, I have just been 3 times and absolutely love it!! It is almost as good as having a massage, it is glorious!! | |
| |
This morning I ran with all the "running chics" We met at Erica's house at 5:30a and drove up to Wasatch Blvd. and ran north for 3 1/2 miles and then turned around and came back. It was cold and rainy and it even snowed on us for about 10 minutes, the wind was blowing pretty hard. I am glad we didn't let the bad weather stop us. It feels good to know we can run no matter what the weather conditons are! Lisa and I both have garmins and we both screwed things up, but we were running for about 1 hour and 25 minutes at about a 12:00 pace, it was a good run.
| | This morning I hiked 5 miles with Ardath on the Bonneville Shoreline. We parked at the church/park pavillion on Wasatch and went south, almost to Corner Canyon and back. Odee went with us. It was beautiful weather, birds chirping ( I thought of Marion's blog), it is nice to take notice of those things. Everytime I hike with Ardath I notice the flowers and the beauty around me, she is always so positive about everything! I think I will have to pay her for therapy, I got a lot of venting done! She also paid for the diet cokes after too, it was my lucky day!! Thanks Ardie!!!!!! | |
| | I met Lauri at the Parkway and we did a nice easy run. It was fun to get to know her. It was nice weather and there were quite a few runners and bikers out this morning. Thanks Lauri for the great run and for the sport beans!! | |
| | Today was my first day off in over a week and I am enjoying the break. I went up to the Heart of Holladay to see my running chics do their 5K, they all did awesome and improved their times since their last race at the Running for Angels 5K in May. It is so fun to see them do so well and see those happy faces!!! It almost makes me want to cry!! Ardath was there watching her granddaughter race, she was super fast, she was finished before I started looking for her. I think my chics are ready for a 10K! Now off for the rest of my fun filled day!!! |
| |
This morning I ran with the girls, we did a 10min run/1 min walk. It felt like hard work, I think having the scale go up this morning was playing tricks with my head! I really need to work on following my weight watchers routine on the weekends, all those Father's Day treats were devine yesterday, but now I am paying the price!
OOPHS! I noticed after reading Maurines note that I wrote this entry on the Sunday slot, but I ran it today- Monday. I will see if I can fix this
| |
***See Sunday's note, that was my run today!!
PS. I had to go up to Snowbird to pick up my final winter pay check and decided while I was going up I would run the Little Cottonwood trail. It was scorching hot, I made it up one mile and turned around, giving me a big 2 extra miles to add to my day. What was I thinking?? I think we are into full blown summer!!!!
| |
This morning Kim and I hiked the Porter Fork trail in Millcreek with Odee. We thought it would be low enough to avoid snow but ran into it just after 2 miles, we fought through it for a while and then said to heck with it. We got a lot of catching up done and had a fun time. A nice cross training day. Now I am headed to the pool to do laps. I had my first private swim lesson last night. I am going to do the Jordanelle triathlon in Aug. and will have to swim a mile, it is completely out of my comfort zone, so I need to spend lots of time in the pool getting ready for this. I am hoping this will fun, I keep telling my self "this will be fun, this will be fun... I am actually pretty dang nervous about the whole thing.
| |
What a busy day! I got up this morning and did a 5 mile hike with Colleen, the Shoreline trail again. I will write tomorrow and report on our 10 mile long run. I wonder if I can come any where near Marion's Riverwoods pace, that would be nice, but I doubt it. Off to the bank before my next appt!!!
Oh dang, I am mixed up, my long run is Friday!!!!!! It has been a super busy crazy day!!
| |
This morning I did muscle-up, I am looking forward to our 10 miler tomorrow!!!
| |
This morning was our 10 mile long run, we had Erica, Lisa, Jenny and me. We started at 5:00a from the Smiths on Bengal and ran to the bridge at South Mountain. We all felt great, I did not put my garmin on for the 5 minute warm up or the 5minute cool down, our pace was 11:39. We all felt strong at the end, the only problem we had was Erica took a fall within the first few minutes and turned her ankle a bit, she was a trooper and did the whole run with us. I love the long runs, they are the best part of this whole running thing! Marion, my goal for my half marathon is to shoot for 10:55!! Now I have to get to work, I will sneak up to my computer while my perm is processing to see if you gals have made your daily entry. Have a great day!!!
5:00p I just went on a 45 min. bike ride with my hubby! It is such a work out!! Going up hills on a bike is TORTURE! I think it is 120 degrees outside too! I prefer my feet to do the running rather than biking any day!!! Oh, well I need to support my husband, he is doing the bike leg of our triathlon.
| |
Finally! We did a real live trail run. Ernie and Gary and I ran, and Harold mountain biked. We started at Mill B in Big Cottonwood and ran to Desolation Lake and back. There was a bit of snow on parts of the trail, but not enough to discourage us. Everything was great, except my adorable husband lost the car keys at the lake, good thing we had one of those magnetic boxes with a key inside on the car. Afterwards it was breakfast at Silver Fork! DELISH!

I keep messing up writting my Mon. run on the Sunday slot, I will get this right yet! |
| |
Okay, I am re-writting this, I just wrote about my morning run on the Sunday slot, I did that last week too. So here I go again, different words same run, and in the right spot.
I ran with Lisa and Jen on their 5k route, it was hilly and hard work, I usually am not even a wake until I have run 3 miles, but we did it and now I am feeling great and ready for the day, I am going to do some yard work and then swim laps when the pool opens at noon.
I hope you all have a great week!
I just did 36 lengths in the pool, I am not sure how many meters that is. It took me 27 minutes. It was nice and easy, I didn't push hard, I need to find out how many lengths is 1500meters. I am thinking around 60 lengths. I think I will be the last person out of the water on this tri, but what the heck it will be my first one of this length and I have to start somewhere!
| |
| |
I am really excited about my day, I just got back from muscle up and now I am going to run a couple of errands and then go to Zumba, a Latin dance work out and then yoga with Ardath. This afternoon some trail running with Maurine on the Cottonwood trail, I am not going to post my miles until after we get back. It will be fun to run with Maurine, she has been recovering from surgery and now SHE'S BACK!!!
OH MY GOSH! Is she ever back!! We had a nice hike up the trail, it took an hour to go 3 miles, alot of talking and catching up and then we ran down, the first mile was very rocky, and had to be alittle cautious, but we sailed down the last two miles. It felt great. There is something very magical that happens when you get of the asphalt and hit the trails!! Thanks Maurine! We had fun talking about all the runs we want to do together, again, I say, so many runs, so little time!!!!
| |
I am taking a day off. My 3 hours of workout classes at the gym yesterday and run with Maurine, pooped me out, it was a lot harder than running 4 1/2 hours, I am stiff in places I normally don't hurt. Any way I am off to help out at Girls Camp this morning and then hang out in Park City until my open water swim clinic at East Canyon. It should be a fun day!
| |
This morning I met Colleen and Ardath at 6:45 at my house and we headed up to Millcreek for a hike. We put in at the Church Fork trail head and did a 3 mile hike along the Pipeline. We had a nice time visiting, but it wasn't long enough, I had to be back for a 9:00a appt. I am running out to the airport this afternoon to pick up Kim S. who has been in Hawaii, and then I think I will do the Cottonwood trail to get in afew more miles, I have had a very low mile week, no complaints it has been a fun week!!
Maurine if you brought your running clothes to work, want to join me around 3:00ish again?
YAHOO! I got my Cottonwood trail in as planned! 95 degrees at about 3:00, I know this is a little crazy, but I wanted to get some more miles in for the week. Today, I went all the way to the top , Maurine and I got alittle lost last time, but now I have it figured out. The total miles, round trip is 6.56, and I dd it in 1:40 which is an average pace of 15:22, not super speedy, but a real good work out. Maurine and I will do it tomorrow and see if we can take a minute or so off.
| |
Today was supposed to be my scheduled 8 mile long run, I am following a program that some of the younger gals in the neighborhood are doing, but they are still up at Girls Camp so I decided to do 2 miles this morning of speedwork (my idea of speedwork will probably make you giggle) and then I am doing 6+ miles this afternoon on the Cottonwood trail with Maurine. I have never really focused on speed, just putting the miles in and going for the distance, so this is new to me, I am inspired by my young running group who are faster than me and from this fabulous blog, reading about all these fast runners, I didn't do anything fancy at the track with a stop watch, but I went out for a fast 2 mile run. I put my garmin on at my front porch and just ran fast around my park and neighborhood, at one point my heels were feeling like they were getting pounded so I took off my shoes and ran on the lawn (thank you Maurine for bring that up) it was HEAVEN!!! I will do that often on my new "speed work sessions" Anyway, I am posting my stats because it is my first attempt at this and I want to see how I improve. And, by the way, I am thrilled!!!
2 miles - total time 19:56 Average Pace 9:57
mile 1 -10:05
mile2 -9:50
Max speed 7.4 mph
Maurine and I did the Cottonwood trail again, we are feeling like one of the "regulars" alot of the same people do the trail daily. I had run past the same man twice this week and he was there again today with his daughter, the daugher was my son's girlfriend, so I got to meet her dad, that was a pleasant surprise. Anyway we did it in 1:36 minutes, we shaved off 4 minutes. Our pace was 14.48. Maurine was a head of me most of the time until about the last mile, I think she was pushing too hard after surgery and she had a little pain and had to slow down. It was a great run! The mileage on the trail was 6.55
| |
| | This morning I felt like the bottom of my feet had been pounded over and over again with a hammer, they felt almost bruised. I went over to the park and ran for one mile on the grass barefoot and then said to heck with it! I am now recovering up at Snowbird with my hubby in our lovely cozy timeshare with my feet up and enjoying the scenery and the quiet. I went to WW this morning and was not too happy. I am 6.8 pounds from my goal, but this is getting to be a joke, I joined in Nov. with only 10 pounds to lose and I can't seem to get there. I thought maybe if I add this to my blog, it might keep me a little more honest, it is worth a try. I am so guilty of rationalizing the food.... must carbo load, and then the reward after a good run, I need to find a balance. | |
| | I am going to follow Marion's lead on making weekly goals #1 30 miles #2 2 days of speed work #3 lose 2 pounds #4 3 days of swimming laps Okay this is all very do-able! No excuses!!! Here's to a good week for all of us!!! | |
| | Kim S. and I took the dogs on a hike to Grandeur Peak. Kim's dog is old and really struggled with the heat so we only made it to the saddle. We had to baby him all the way down, so now we know.... Lucky can only do sissy-la-la hikes and strolls thru the park, that's it!! I was planning on doing laps at the pool, but right now a nap sounds like heaven. So we shall see.... | |
| |
My plan was to do a 2 mile speed work out.... I pushed as hard as I could for one mile and did it in 9:30, I was very happy with that time, but I couldn't breathe or move and so I staggered around the park like a drunk for the next mile and chit chatted with the neighbors, my lungs felt like I had run a marathon, no it was harder than a marathon, I do my marathons at around a 12 min pace and it is a cake walk. I guess if I am going to improve my time it is going to have to hurt....do I want to hurt??? This blog is making me try to compete and get my speed up, it is all good, I needed a BIG fat kick in the pants. Thanks girls, I willl be a better runner for it someday, hopefully!!!!
I had an appt. cancel so I ran over to Rite-Aid and got some gel heel insoles for $6.99 and took them out on a test run and did the Cottonwood trail. It made a huge differance!
| |
This morning we got out the door at 4:50am to hit the road. We had all of the Running Chics except for Erica, who has some injuries and couldn't join us. So there was Jen, who is this cute little 29 year old, speedy Gonzales Des who is in her 30's and Lisa, the 40 year old and mother of baby twins, and me the Mother Hen , that is 53 years old. Up until today I have kept up with my little chics, it has been hard because I usually just run for distance, but these gals are "on a mission" and they have busy lives and need to get this running done and back to their families before their husbands go to work. Today was hard, we really clipped along. We parked at the Old Mill Corporate Center and ran along Holladay Blvd road until it turned into 2300 E and ran all the way to the freeway and turned around and came back. We did our 11 miles in 2:13, which was about a 12:24 pace, the girls had to stop acouple of times for potty breaks and I was very relieved and took advantage of some time to walk. I was behind them most of the way, but arrived to our destination about 2 min. behind them, not bad for the old Mother Hen!!!
Here are the mile splits:
10:48
10:29
12:02
14:48
15:55
12:00
11:01
10:59
11:56
12:56
13:57
We did a 8min run/1min walk interval. It was hard work, but a fabulous work out. My little chics are SOOOO AWESOME!!!
PS. I went to the pool and did 40 lengths, it took me 29 minutes, I need to do 70 lengths to equal my swim at Jordonelle, I have a LOOONG way to go!
| |
| | Soooo LOVELY!!!! Ardath and I got in the car with Odee and headed up to Millcreek Canyon for a hike. We put in at Birchhollow and hiked along the Pipeline trail. We liked the part between Birchhollow and Churchfork the best, nice and shady, there is more sun exposer beyond Churchfork. Lots of trail runners out this morning, we decided next week I would run and Ardie will hike and Odee will go absolutely nuts running back and forth between us trying to herd us together. A great way to start the day!!! I think I made my 30 miles for the week already!! Yahoo! I hope you all have a VERY HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!!!!! | |
| | I didn't do a flippin' thing in the way of exercise today, we stayed up at our timeshare in Snowbird and lounged. LOOSER!!! | |
| | I spent the day in Huntsville at Harold's family reunion camp out and did a very whimpy 2 mile walk, I am craving a real run! I have been green with envy reading all your exciting posts about your weekend runs. I have some serious catching up to do!!! | |
| |
It is Sunday again, and time to plan my week out. My goals for last week were a total bomb. I wanted to lose 2 pounds and ended up gaining 2, I wanted to swim 3 times, only made it once, and speed work, well, I could write a whole page on that, I was going at it all wrong and thanks to Laurie, I think I will not really plan on a real speed work out session for awhile, everytime I run with my Running Chics I am working on speed to just to keep up with them, so for now they are my speed work outs, other than that, I am just going to focus on distance, I have decided, now that my 50K back in May,is just a foggy memory, that I am going to attempt the Ogden Valley 50 miler with Maurine on Oct. 25, so I am going to be trying to put in as many miles as possible and have that be where I put my energy. I am also going to try and spend more time swimming laps. So, that being said my new goals are:
#1 35 miles for the week
#2 3 sessions of lap swimming
#3 focus on eating healthy ( notice no specific number.....)
I wish you all a good week, thanks for the support and the laughs, you guys are the best!
I did an evening stroll with my hubby up Big Cottonwood Canyon, we wanted to check to see if Puke Hill was free of snow, it is ready to go!!!!
| |
| | This is a quick post, I have an appt due in a few minutes and am still in my stinky running clothes. I did 7.60 miles on the BST, from Draper to Corner Canyon and up Corner Canyon about a mile. Nice and easy, alot of walking, a nice start for the week. I ran into a massage client on the trail, I always love it when I see friends out on my morning run. | |
| | Lisa and I did a short run this morning, a 5 minute warm up of walking then two 15min. run/1 min walk intervals, it took us 41 minutes, we had a short cool down too. I am not sure of the pace with all the walking but we were bouncing between 9 and 11 min. miles, while on the running intervals. It was a good effort. Gotta cut this short, I am outta diet coke and need one in a bad way, so off to the Sev I go.....! | |
| |
This was an extra FABULOUS run this morning. Ardath and I went up to Millcreek with Odee and she walked and I ran. On the way back I passed Ardath and told her I was going to put Odee in the car and for her drive down and pick me up! It took me 2:16 minutes. A nice easy pace for me on a trail. Tomorrow is the 9 miler with the Running Chics, I won't get away with that kind of pace with those speedsters! I am looking forward to a butt kicking run tomorrow. Today was a pure paradise!!!!! Yahoo!!! I did laps today! 60 lengths in 46 minutes, it seems like hours..... 70 will KILL me!
| |
| | Our 9 miler was really pretty laid back today, which I am so grateful for. The younger girls had a few issues which slowed them down, potty stops, crud in shoes, chaffing ( these young girls haven't learned how to pee in the woods yet, I guess that is a skill that comes with age, and a lack of modesty) Anyway, it was nice, Lisa and I were out in front most of the time and took the time to do more walking to let them catch up. We saw one skunk and two deer, a real nature run. We did my favorite road route, along Wasatch Blvd. almost to South Mountain, it is nice running along the foothills, not a lot of traffic, a nice shoulder, and beautiful homes and scenery. We did our 9 miles in 1:50, and our average pace was 12:14. I felt we could have pushed a lot harder, but it was nice to take it easy. I love long slow runs, especially with good friends! Oh! I think I have my 35 miles in for the week! Yahoo! | |
| | I got up early, even though I planned to sleep in a bit, so ended up going on a 2 mile walk around the neighborhood, my heels are pretty hammered, I will have to take it real easy this next week in preparation for Bryce Canyon. I hope you all have great races or nice Saturday runs today!! I am on my way to ww, I have had a very good week of eating healthy, but from the way my scale looks, I am not going to see much of a differance. | |
| | Goal time again! Last week I did pretty good, I did 37.95 miles, almost 3 miles over my goal. I ate healthy and lost a 1/2 pound. I missed out on one of my swim sessions, but that was my only down fall, so not bad. This week I have Bryce Canyon so I will be running a lot less, I want to make sure my heels are healed. So my focus this week is to swim and eat healthy. I am now 6.2 pounds away from my goal. Everyone, have a wonderful healthy week, no more injuries.... especially Maurine and Marion! Oh, and I guess my biggest goal this week is to have an average pace at Bryce of under an 11 min. mile. 10:anything would be AWESOME!!! My last half I did in 2:40, that was a couple of years ago, I should beat that all the heck!!! Again, HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEK!!!! | |
| |
I woke up this morning tired, not in the mood to hike, Kim S. got to my house also tired, we both about decided to bag the idea and thought that if we got moving it might help. We drove to East Canyon and tried a new part of the Mormon Trail, it was completely flat and uneventful, it may have been nice to mountain bike, but since I gave that up, I won't be going up there again, anyway, now I know! We probably walked 2 miles, I forgot my garmin along with my energy. I don't if my low energy is all in my head because I told myself it would be a low milage week or if I am really tired, I haven't run since Friday, so I feel like there is no reason to be tired. I am heading to the pool now to try and attempt 70 lap the full length of my triathlon swim, but I am sooooo NOT in the mood. I finally made my 70 lengths in the pool. I felt super sluggish and unmotivated, it took me almost 1:10 minutes, that is very depressing!!!! I really need to whittle down that time.
| |
No running today. I did muscle up this morning and I am doing yoga at 10:30, and some swimming at noon. I am looking forward to a nice easy trail run tomorrow morning with Laurie and Maurine, and anyone else that would like to join us, maybe Lisa and the chics? Have a great day!!! I did 40 laps today in 35min. Two days of swimming in a row! yahoo!!
| |
This is my taper week, I am not good at tapering or should I say, I taper too much. Tapering is way overrated and I always feel sluggish and lazy the week before a run, I need to taper less and run more the week before a race. I was thinking I need to give my hammered heels a rest, which they need, but my whole mood gets funky when I don't run. All the hiking and classes at the spa doesn't give me what I need, I have to run, so I need to find the right balance for the week before a run. Maybe do 4 miles a day every day and do it at a slower pace... I need to figure this out because I have so many races planned, I can't afford to feel so crappy the week before a race. Anyway, Laurie saved the day, she came over to my house and we did the Pipeline trail up Millcreek. It was so nice and cool and beautiful, we were on the trail by 6:20, there were several other runners out that early, we had a nice time visiting and going at an easy pace, Laurie has had a high milage week and was happy to kick back, and I haven't run since Friday, so I was just getting my wings back, so we were both happy to have a run where the time didn't matter. Ahhhhh, I feel MUCH better. Thanks Laurie!!! I did 40 laps in the pool in 34 mins.!! Three days of swimming in a row!
| |
Okay, I did 2 miles in the neighborhood today. My average pace was 10:39 mile 1-11:07 mile 2-10:11 Lisa drove by and stopped and we talked for about 1 minute, so I was actually a little faster than that. Yahoo! Now, can I do that for 13 miles???? Oh, and my max speed was 7.8! I went to Wasatch Running and talked to Brad for about an hour and half about my heels and the triathlon, I ended up buying a $33 pair of in soles, I think they are going to be helpful, they seem to feel a little better this morning. He kept mentioning the PF word, and I refuse to believe that I have that! That is what OTHER people get! ****** I did 60 lengths in 57 minutes!!!! 4 swim days in row!!!!!

| | Hi Everyone, I am in my hotel room in Bryce Canyon! The drive was gorgous, Harold and I walked around "Fairyland" in Bryce and a bit in Red Canyon, I absolutely love this place, it is going to be so much fun to run thru this awesome park. I told Harold I really have to do a good job because all my blogging buddies will be watching! He thinks it is quite funny, I am about the most non-competitive person EVER! Get me thru the finish line with any time and I think I deserve a medal (hey I usually get one!) and I think I am wonder woman!!! I tell myself I beat all the couch patato's of America!!! Rock on Leslie! So, I am trying for 2:20 which would be a PR for me, my last half was 2:40 several years ago. So we will see if this ol' girl can kick it tomorrow!!!! Wish me luck!!! And thanks for all your wonderful comments and encouragement!!! I love all you bloggers!!!!! | |
| Race: |
Bryce Canyon Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) 00:02:18, Place overall: 270, Place in age division: 9
I did it!!!!! a PR!! My time was 2:18 and my average pace was 10:33!!! I was so happy with my time!! It is funny how kicking it up a notch, well actually 22 minutes, changes EVERYTHING! Usually my runs are real social, chatting with all the runners in the back, but this time I put on my ipod and kept focused the whole way, watching my garmin like fool and everytime it got above an 11 min. pace I would get into gear and push. I didn't talk to one person, one gal did comment on how cute it was that I kissed my hus band, he was on the bike beside me for a couple of miles, but other than that it was business all the way! I loved it! Here are my splits:
mile 1- 10:36
mile 2-10:46
mile 3- 8:46
mile 4- 9:32
mile5- 10:10
mile 6- 9:40
mile 7- 9:59
mile 8-10:28
mile 9- 11:42
mile 10- 11:09
mile 11- 11:41
mile 12- 11:53
mile 13- 10:39
I felt pretty good thru the race and recovered fast! The course was really nice, I would love to do it again! Harold and I are now at my folks amazing cabin in Torrey and we are going to Cafe Diablo tonight to celebrate and then to the Hale Theater in Grover (Yes, there is a Hale theater in Grover, it is soooo much fun!!)
Girls, thanks for all the support, I thought of you all while running, it was great motivation for me!!!! Thanks!!!!
I put on a new picture of Harold and I at Bryce Canyon. My old picture was taken after my 50K race in Ivans and I looked like an old worn out woman, which I was!

| | I wanted to let you all know that my sweet 31 year old son-in-law is in the hospital. He was in a Rugby accident and ended up having a stroke. I was going to write more, but family just arrived, I will update when I can. | |
| | I decided that I need to do a short run every morning for my mental and emotional state of mind. Maurine and Laurie joined me to run the Pipeline trail, Odee and I did a slow shuffle while the girls took off and did a nice run. It was good therapy for me to get out after spending all day in the hospital. We are grateful that Paul is moving all his limbs, he hasn't spoken to us yet and he was with out blood flow to his brain for 7 hours, he is on a drug that is supposed to thin the blood and get to his brain better, I am not sure of all the medical terms, please remember him in your prayers. Thank you Laurie for the beautiful roses from your garden, they will brighten up Paul's room, and thank you all for your thoughtful remarks.
| |
| | A quick update on Paul, he had surgery yesterday, they removed half of his skull to allow for the swelling, it was frightening to even think about it, but it was our best option. This morning he woke up 5:00a and reached out and held my daughters hand, it was a wonderful sign, he is still with us and our prayers and thoughts and his will to live are working. Thanks for asking and caring. Love,Leslie | |
| | I did a 6.20 mile hike on the Cottonwood trail. It was nice to move my legs again. I need to make sure and get my running in between time spent in the hospital. It looks like he will be in intensive care for at least 3 weeks. I will try and keep up on my blog entrys and enjoy watching yours. | |
| |
I slept in a bit, and did a short run/walk around the neighborhood, I will try and get back into my running more next week. It has been hard to think of anything else besides Paul. I really need running in my life, on many levels.
| |
What a fun run! I got to run with my Chic's this morning! We went down to the Parkway. Harold and our grandson DeVante rode their bikes and Odee tagged along. Des and Jen went out ahead of us, we figured Jen is 24 years younger than me, and Des is a youngster too, so Lisa and I didn't even try to keep up this morning, we just had a nice comfortable run and caught up on all the lastest. The super fun part was recognizing our blogging buddies on the trail. I recognized Jody first from her picture on the blog and realized she was with Kim and Paula, I knew Kim lived further south so I didn't think it could be her, but it was. What a happy reunion!!!! We chatted for about 3 or 4 minutes and then we both went our separate ways! We think we saw Brent too on the trail, but at the time didn't realize it was him. It was fun to do the parkway and see all the runners and not have to deal with traffic.
We did our 8 miles in 1:40 Our average pace was 12:31
It was fun to see all you girls!!! You look great!!
| |
| | It has been over a week since Paul had his accident, he is improving every day, if all goes well he will be out of the ICU on Tue. and in rehab. He spoke his first couple of words today, it looks like speech will be the most difficult for him. We are very optimistic about his progress. I just wanted to put it out there that Maurine and I and my hubby and hopefully afew others are running the Wasatch Crest trail Sat. It is about 11-12 miles. We are hoping to get on the trail super early to beat the crowds, maybe we will try to be on trail somewhere between 5 or 6 (we might need headlights!) We have done that before, we like to hike up Puke Hill (1mile) in the dark and watch the sunrise and run along the ridge before it gets crowded. If you have never done the trail it is spectacular, you can see Park City on one side of the ridge and Brighton and Solitude on the other side. Once you climb the first mile it is fairly flat along the ridge and then about 5 or 6 miles down into Millcreek. Depending on how many people are interested we may need help shuttling from Millcreek to Big Cottonwood Canyon. We would love to have anyone interested join us!!! | |
| | Today was a great day, a 5.26 mile hike with Kim S. up to Lake Blanche and then a 6.21 mile run with Maurine on the Pipeline in the afternoon. It looks like Paul is really going to leave ICU tomorrow and go upstairs to Rehab!!!!! This is a quickie! Hi to all of you and HAPPY RUNNING!!!! | |
| |
Did a 4:34 mile run by myself on the road, not my favorite thing, but time wouldn't allow a trail run, I ran slow which I usually do when I am alone, it was a 13 min. average pace, 2+ miles up hill and then back again. The heels felt pretty good, glad I stayed off them yesterday.
Paul got out of ICU yesterday and into rehab, we thought it would be 3 weeks in the ICU and it was only 8 days! I got to see him take his first few steps, he was holding onto bars, but he did it. He speach is what is going to need the most help. He can say-okay, yes, no, and his name.
Tonight Harold is taking me to the Steve Miller Band, YAHOO!!!!
| |
| |
This morning, my trail run got cancelled, so I went out on my own and ran into Lisa and Jen, they were just finishing up so I walked with them for a few minutes and then ran on my own. Slow and easy. Maurine and Laurie, and anyone else interested in running the Wasatch Crest trail on Sat., we decided to meet at 6:00am at Einsteins on Wasatch Blvd. We will put Krashman's (sorry, is his real name Chris?) bike on our car and we can all drive up to Gaurdmans together. When we get done and are at the Upper Millcreek Parking lot, Harold and Krashman can ride down the canyon to Einsteins, then Krashman can go up and get Laurie n his car, unless Laurie wants to run another 10 miles or so down the canyon road, which Maurine and I may or may not do depending on knees and heels. I will decide then if I want Harold to ride the car up the canyon and pick Maurine and I up. Did I make any sense at all?? Laurie, call me if you have questions 943-1571. Otherwise see you at 6:00am!! I can't wait!!!!
Oh, I went to WW this morning, and was down 1.4, so I am now 4.2 pounds from my goal! I hope to reach goal before my tri on Aug. 23!!!! These last few pounds are killer!
| |
I did a nice easy 4 miles today, I wanted to be kind to my heels for tomorrow's long run. They felt pretty good today, so I think I should be fine.
I don't know if I mentioned this or not to my blogging friends, but Paul climbed 2 fllights of stairs yesterday!
Maurine and Laurie see you at 6:00am at Einsteins!!!!
| |
Today was the perfect running day! I have been waiting all year to do this run! It was worth the wait, and I hope I can up there at least one more time before the snow flies, life gets so busy and it takes some time transporting people from canyon to canyon, but it is SOOO worth it! We all met at Einsteins at 6:00am - Harold ( my most adorable husband), my brother Steve O from Springville, Steve Hortsmanshoff, Maurine, and Lauri and Chris. The guys all mountain biked and the girls ran. We beat the heavy traffic, that trail is so popular now with bikers, we were jumping off the trail often so not to be trampled. The bikers were all very nice and appreciative of our efforts at getting out of their way. Everyone was happy to be out, the wildflowers were spectacular and it was so cool and nice up there. The 3 of us girls stayed together for about 3 miles and then Maurine took off like a crazy woman and we didn't see her until the end. Laurie and I enjoyed the scenery and chatted for most of the time, I think we have her hooked on the trails, she is a natural billy goat! We saw a few Wasatch 100 runners training..... oh my dream is to do that some day..... dream on old lady... Laurie and I hit the parking lot and none of our group was in sight, so we headed down the road and finally our boys came up in the car and rescued us. The boys had jumped back on the pipeline at Elbow Fork and rode all the way to Rattlesnake Gulch, before coming back to get us. They had a great time, Steve O, Harold and Chris all crashed, but lived to tell the story. It was the BEST!!!
Yahoo! I made my 40 miles this week!!!
AND..... My Paul is doing SUPER!!!!!!!!!! That is the best news!!!!!
| |
| | This morning Kim S. and I went on a hike up Millcreek, we took the Pipeline trail and then headed up the Birch Hollow trail that goes up to the ridge. It is not a very popular trail, so we were doing a little bush wacking. Odee got to try out his new doggie back pack. He didn't seem to mind it, he can now carry his own water and leash and dog treats. It was great! Now I am going to head off to the pool and try and get in my 70 laps! | |
| |
I am pooped! I haven't really recovered from my 15 1/2 mile trail run Sat., but I couldn't NOT go with my chics on their 14 miler today, so I tagged along, in the back and did a little more walking. It was tough. I had an average pace of 13:54. Glad to have the miles in and visit with the chics, but I felt like I got my butt kicked good. I am chillin' the rest of the day!!!!
| |
Today is a nothing day, no running or exersizing at all, I really over did it yesterday. Today I an focusing on our fundraiser for Paul, we are having a celebration in a park in Sandy on Sept.6th! Food, Polynesian dancing, music, raffle and FUN FUN FUN! I will post details if any of you can come up and party with us!!!
Run hard everyone for me! Except you Marion, run slow and behave yourself!!!
| |
Another no running day, spent the night in the hospital to give Julie a break. I did do 30 min. of swimming laps. Now it is back to the hospital!
Good luck on all your training everyone!
|
| |
Today is another "nothing" day, BUT.... I am doing a 10 miler with the chics tomorrow! My heels feel better, they needed a rest.
Paul gets out of the hospital tomorrow, which is great, but will need care around the clock until they can put back his skull, so it will be alot of work for Julie to arrange for his constant care.
Have a great weekend everyone and enjoy your long runs!!!
| |
| |
Jen, Lisa and I did our favorite 10 mile route, from the Smiths on Wasatch to the South Mountain bridge. We started out at 5:30, it was nice and cool the whole way, we had a nice easy pace, it was a great morning. Lots of runners out this morning! I had heel issues the whole way, so I probably looked pretty spazy but it was still a perfect morning. It took us 2:15, about a 13:32 min. pace, we decided we could never get away with that if Des was along, so since she was out of town we kicked back and loved it! We did miss Des though! I called Harold at the 8 mile mark and he came and picked us up.
Hope you all had great long runs or races, have a great weekend
| |
Okay, I need to get clear on my goals for next week, and so I thought I would write them down for the whole blogging world to see!!
#1 NO DIET COKE, not one little tiny sip!
#2 Swim 4 times this week
#3 NO running on pavement
#4 at least one trail run with Maurine
# 5 ICE ICE BABY on my poor heels
This shouldn't be a difficult week to get right! No mileage goals! I CAN DO THIS!!!!
| |
| | I did a 7 mile hike with Kim S. We started at Butler Fork in Big Cottonwood and hiked to the ridge. We hiked along the ridge for about 1 1/2 hours and then down the other side. It was a new trail for me, it is interesting seeing how they all connect, I am slowly getting familiar with a lot of these Wasatch trails. Kim and I should write a book, a Girls Guide to hiking the Wasatch! The only Wasatch trails book we have is pretty outdated and it gets frustrating when you rely on it. The heels are still painful, but they would have been worse pounding them on the pavement! Ice Ice Baby...... | |
| |
Ardath and I went on a hike with Odee on the Shoreline trail. It was nice and cool, it was perfect until a lady freaked out and screamed like a lunatic because Odee came running up to her dog without a leash, I am such a naughty pet owner.
The heels are feeling pretty good.
| |
Well, here it is Wed. and I haven't had a diet coke since Sunday and it has been painless, I haven't had a headache and I haven't felt bloated. This has been super easy, I hope this frame of mind continues! I know it is all in the head for me.
I walked for 2 miles in the neighborhood with my best buddy Ann from Hawaii. I haven't run since Sat. and my heels are feeling a little better. Tomorrow I will test out the heels on a trail run on the Pipeline with Maurine and hopefully Laurie.
Now I need to check out your morning runs! Have a great day!
| |
| |
Good Morning! Just wanted you all to know that I am doing a trail run tonight with Maurine, so I will post my run this evening. I hope you all have a nice run this morning.
Today is day #4 and no Diet Coke!!! The scale seems to be moving down a bit, I am feeling so much better, I am thinking I am going to count down the days and see how long I can go....maybe 100!!
I swam for one hour yesterday, I get butterflies in my stoamch thinking about a mile swim in Jordanelle. I will do a practice swim this Sat. at Jordanelle and see if I can do it.
Paul is back in the hospital, he has surgery today, they think he may have an infection, I hope this is just a minor set back.
More later.... I can't wait to hear about your day! I just got back from dropping off Maurine, we had a great trail run. We drove up Millcreek canyon, Harold jumped on his bike and rode to the top of the canyon and we got on the trail at Birch Hollow and ran to the end of the Pipeline and back. It was nice and cool most of the way. It was great to have a liesurely run with Maurine. After our run we went to Zuppa's for dinner. Odee came along sporting his new back pack. It was nice to have him carry his own water, and BTW he looked very rugged and tough, a true Ultra dog!!!! Maurine and I got in over 9 miles and Harold did just over 32!!! A great evening indeed!!!
| |
| |
I woke up this morning to very tender heels! No running today, but that is okay, I have a full day of appts. in my salon, and then I am going to Utah County for wedding reception. Polynesian food and dancing, a good time for sure!! I am saving points for Guava cake!! Paradise! My hips are already swaying.... ( and not from the music!)
I am excited to see how your long runs go this weekend. Cross your fingers I don't drown in Jordanelle!
***** Day #5 of No Diet Coke!!!!! *****
| |
| |
Today was the Jordanelle Triathlon clinic. I did a swim across Jordnelle and back for the practice, they said that it was probably just shy of the sprint distance, so not even half of what I have to do next week, but on the bright side, I enjoyed it, I wasn't panic stricken, and I wasn't the last one out of the water, almost, but not quite. I think I will be fine next week.
Harold did great on the bike, 25 miles in 1:15, so he is feeling pretty good about things too. My son is doing it and he also felt the clinic was great and feels more confident about the race. I think we might all have a good experience for our first time.
I ended up walking up the road and back, I should have run, but in my mind all I could think about was the swim and I just wasn't in the running mode. I have to gear myself up for things and be mentally ready.
| |
| |
Okay, I made my one goal of No Diet Coke for a whole week! Yahoo! But I was replacing it with Guava Nector! So this week, I need to replace the Guava Nector with Ice Tea or Water, something not loaded with sugar.
Since I am no longer doing runs on pavement, I didn't have time to drive to the canyon and run so today is a big goose egg! That is the down side of trail running, it takes more of a commitment to get your run in. So I slept in, I feel like a slob today. Okay, a lesson learned here, I need to get my fanny out of bed earlier and hit the trails!
| |
| |
I was a good girl today and got up at 6:00a with my hubby and was on the trail by 6:30, I saw Lisa and drove her to Jen's so I could at least say Hi to Lisa and welcome her home from Alaska. The chic's were running on the pavement, so I couldn't join them, I am being strict about my new "NO PAVEMENT" rule. I ran the Cottonwood trail, that is the first time I have done it in the morning for months, it was cool and you could feel the breeze from the river. There were several runners out and I saw Alice and Jon on their bikes. It only took me 10 minutes to drive there, it is not a big deal, I need to do this on a regular basis. I went to the 3rd bridge and back. 4.84 miles in 1:16. I think my day will be much better today.
BTW Paul was released from the hospital last night, he will have home health care come in take care of his IV. Our fundrasier on Sept. 6th is looking better every day, I hope some of you can come. It will probably be an all day affair at the Bell Canyon Park in Sandy, but I will give you more details later.
| |
| |
This morning Lisa and I did the Pipeline trail. It was 52 degrees when we started out, perfect! I was struggling with my heels, I am going to go and ice right now.
I just found out Cubword is going to play at our fundraiser as well as the Moleni Brothers, you can check out his music at Cubworld.cc Jacob Kongaika (Cubworld) was also our neighbor in Tonga, I am soooo excited to have these two musicans perform for us. They are so great!!! It will be such a fun day in the park!!
Thanks Lisa for coming with me on a trail run, we need to Jen and Des to go with us next week!!
| |
| |
Hello! I have been running around like a wild woman, but not in my running shoes! I have been trying to get my fundraiser-party in order before I head up to Jordanelle today for the weekend. We got a condo and are staying until Sunday, some of the kids and grandkids are camping up there. Should be a fun time.
I wish all of you Hobblecreek runners the best of luck! A PR for everyone!

Jordanelle Triathlon Olympic Distance (6 Miles) 00:01:11
We survived the Jordanelle Triathlon! I was very nervous about the mile swim in open water. I was in the last wave of the Olympic distance swimmers, I stayed very wide to avoid the crowds, I think I probably was overly cautious and swam an extra half mile. We had to swim in a big triangle, and the Olympic distance had to do it twice. It is an odd feeling to not be able to know what is going on around you, you feel real isolated (especially when you are swimming 20ft off to the side of everyone else. After the first loop it seemed like I was all alone so I stayed more on course. I asked a kayaker as I started the 2nd round if I was the last Olympic swimmer and he said yes. I thought I was and I felt like the last loop was done all by myself. I didn't know if the sprinters were waiting for me to get in or what. Why was I out there by myself and this huge crowd on the shore? It felt like forever, and I was thinking I was so out of my league it was ridiculous, and I felt like they were saying over the bullhorn, "Sorry for the delay we have to wait for this PATHETICALLY SLOW Olympic swimmer before we can start the sprint division" As I swam to the shore the Sprinters were in the water waiting and I swam into there starting area, again, swimming too far off course ,they made a clearing for me to swim thru them. I was happy to be done, the embaressment of being so slow wasn't too bad because the crowd was very kind and friendly and treated me like a world class athelete and cheered me on. I ran thru the transition to Harold who was ready to bike, I thought for sure it was over an hour and twenty minutes and he said my time was 54 minutes. I was really happy to have been under an hour.
Harold took off and passed my 29 year old son and his buddy that left 15 minutes earlier and did his 25 mile bike in 1:21! I was super surprised to see him come back to the transition before the boys.
I took off for the10k and my heels hurt and it was very hot by this time, and trudged thru it. I worked hard, and had a time of 1:11, an average pace of 11:30, which was just fine with me.
Our total time on our garmin was 3:26:37, we will see how that compares to the the race results.
I really enjoyed it and want to do more. I need swimming lessons!
PS I forgot to mention, I was NOT the last person out of the water for the Olympic Distance, there was at least one man, and maybe more, I will have to check the results.
| |
| |
I slept in this morning, Harold came to give me kiss good-bye and said the chicks had just run by the house. Wah wah wah! I want to run on the road, just because it is easy, get your shoes on and go, but I am trying to save my heels for my 2 marathons.
Tomorrow, I will rise and shine early and hit the Cottonwood trail.
I hate non running days.
| |
| |
This morning I woke up to AGAIN some very sore heels, the thought of running on a trail sounded too brutal, so I took Odee for a 1/2 mile walk on a trail, even after the 1/2 mile walk it was sore, I thought I might be able to walk it off, but no such luck. So..... today I am calling the doctor and seeing if she will refer me to someone that might help me get rid of this.
I hope you all have a nice morning run, I will have to live thru yours! Have a great day!
PS I went to a store called Chandlers, the owner is a PT. He works with a lot of runners. He looked at my feet and gave me some exersizes to do and a better pair of insoles. He told me to take 200mg of Ibprofen (or however you spell it) 3 times a day for a few days for the inflamation and to do some specific exersizes he showed me. He did not tell me to stay off my feet, just to keep my mileage low for a few weeks and see how it goes. I had made an appt. to see my doctor and see if she would refer me to a specialist, but I am going to cancel that and go with the PT for now. I can always try the doctor if this doesn't work. Wish me luck. I need my feet to work, I have about 4 weeks to go!
| |
| |
God Bless Chandlers Shoe store and the nice PT who owns it! Thanks Ardith for referring me to them. I wrote in my blog yesterday that the PT(I wish I had his name, nice older guy) checked out my feet. Yes, I have PT, he also said I have plantar warts, ( I always thought that I had glass in my feet that had grown over to make callouses, they always hurt, but then I run to the point where they go numb and I can't feel it anymore) He also said the pads of my feet have worn down (due to age.....Yeck!) Anyway, he gave me exersizes to do, a new insole that is built up more in the arch and more padded than the one I got at Wasatch Running, and he told me to take 600mg of Vit.I 3 times a day until I feel better, he told me to cut my mileage down, but that I didn't need to quit!! Yahoo!! I am a miserable person if I don't get my run in.
I woke up with my feet feeling better than they have in weeks! I did a 2.07 easy run to the first bridge up on the Little Cottonwood trail. I felt great, I didn't even have to land on my toes and then my heel to avoid pain!
I am going to follow the PT's orders religiously! He also said NEVER go barefoot!
All you young runnners, please take care of your feet, you will get old one day and I KNOW you want to run forever so take care of them. NO flip flops unless they have support! I spent $50 on a pair of "Fitflops", they came recommended by a friend who had PF and is now fine.
I am so happy! Have a great day!

| |
| |
I cramed in a 3 mile run up the Little Cottonwood trail. Life is super busy and of course I am dealing with PF, so my running week looks pathetic. I am hoping I can get more miles in next week.
I would love to come down and do Onion Days with you all, but I am not sure I can pull it off, I will just have to see how the weekend goes and make a last minute decsion.
Have a great weekend!! | |
| |
Whimpy, whimpy, whimpy! I only did 5 miles on the Cottonwood Trail and mostly walked. The heels are doing pretty well and just want them to stay that way. I only got in about 10 miles this week. Next week I will try and increase it to 20 and see how that feels.
Do you think Harold will miss me if I sneak off to Onion Days to do a 5K with the girls? Maybe I could put some sleeping pills in his ice cream tomorrow night.
| | Today I slept in, the weather looked questionable. Harold and I took Odee to Tanner Park and walked. We ended up getting caught it a wild storm, it was even hailing on the way home. We ended up going to see Momma Mia and I loved it. I am not a DVD buyer, but I am getting this one! I loved seeing Meryle Streep and the other gals kicking up their heels and having a great time. Next year I am spending my Labor day at Onion Days!!! Read Marion's blog for a report on the fun times in Payson!

Life is sooo crazy! We are trying to wrap things up for the fundraiser, it is a good time to give the heels a break too. I will be ready to go full speed ahead next week, but this week is all about survival! I hope you are all enjoying your runs with this nice cool weather!
If any of you can come out to the fundraiser we would love to have you party with us!!!! The info is on the discussion board, a big thank you to Marion!!!
Happy Running! | |
| |
I had the slowest run EVER! My mind is totally on the fundraiser, I was thinking of all the zillion things I need to do, it was helpful to organize my thoughts, but I did a total zombie shuffle! I keep telling myself NEXT week I will get back in gear. My heels are still tender....dang.
| |
| | I woke up at 5:00a, couldn't sleep, didn't want to go up the canyon in the dark, so what's a girl to do that has sore heels??? I laced up my ever fashionable Z-Coil shoes ( the ridiculously ugly shoes with springs) and did a slow road run. It wasn't all that bad, I may actually do a little road running in them before TOU, I may actually wear the ugly mothers at the TOU! I feel SOOO out of shape! I was huffing and puffing the whole way up the hill. I am in sorry shape that is for sure. TOU will be a training run for ST. George and, ST. George will be a training run for whatever I do next. Holy Cow I feel like a slug..... but the Party in Park tomorrow is going to be all worth it!! My rock star son did an interview today with Big Budda on channel 13 and I was one proud mama ! He was jumping off one BarBQ Grill to the next on his trials bike and being all fancy and smooth. How did I get such cool kids??? I need to shut up right now..... sorry, these motherly pride moments are far and few between. I need to bask in my breif moment of glory!!!!!!!! | |
| |
I was so excited to run with my Chicks again!!! It has been almost 2 months since I have run with them. I have had to slow down and stay on the trails to get my heels in better shape. I am feeling alot better. It really helps wearing my funny Z-Coil shoes when I am on the road.
Our pace felt good to me this morning, I was afraid the chicks would leave me in the dust, since I have been slacking in my training lately, but I kept up. It was a nice run, dark, cool, and fun to feel like I am part of the pack again. Thanks girls.
I haven't blogged since the fundraiser, it was a huge success! Such an amazing turnout. Marion came all the way up from Payson, it was so fun to meet her handsome husband and adorable kids. Thank you Marion!!! I am mad that I didn't introduce her to Lisa, my mind was a little befuddled.... okay totally befuddled!
I am excited to really have a nice fall running season, and enjoy TOU and ST. George!!!!!!

Met the chicks at 5:30 and it was raining, so walked over to the indoor track and did about 3 miles.
My heels are feeling better, but I am going to try and get into a podiatrist and get it checked over, ASAP!
Have a great day everyone!
| |
| |
Met the chicks again at 5:30 and did a neighborhood loop, I feel like I am starting all over, but am pleased I can keep up with them. I am huffing a lot more than they are. My average pace was 13:21 because I turned on my garmin as I left the house and walked over to Jennys. mile 1-16:39 (walking about half the mile) mile 2-12:17 (up hill) mile 3 12:59 ( up and down) mile 4 11:20 ( up and down). Boy, that was real technical stats! Any way, it was a good run, pushed just hard enough to get a good work out but not over do it, the heels are feeling good.
I saw the doc and got a referral to see the podiatrist on Monday, she thinks if I have PF it is a very minor case. I didn't feel pain when she was pushing my heel, she said most people jump out of their chair. I think it is due to my icing and new insoles and exersizes and my Z Coil shoes. Things are looking up!!!
| |
| | Jenny, Lisa and I walked this morning, we did the Cottonwood Heights 5K route, did a lot of talking, ended up talking about the old days in Tonga, some of those memories have been buried in the back of my head for years. Makes me appreciate my life now. God Bless America. | |
| |
I started out with the chicks for an 8 mile run, and bailed out at 6. My heels were a little tender, and my family was heading up to Deer Creek to go on the Hobie Cat.
I have an appt. with the podiatrist Monday, and can't wait to see what help he can give me.
| |
Only 5 more days until the TOU! My running plan is to do a short easy run with the chicks on Tue, Wed and Thur. This will be my long training run for ST. George, I have been off my feet for a couple of months, but I think I should be able to pull off doing St. George at somewhere between 4:50 to 5:15, that is what I am hoping for anyway. My PR for St. George is 4:51, it would be nice to beat it, but I will be happy with a healthy finish. If I feel okay after the TOU and the doctor says my feet are okay, I will sign up to do the OV50 with Maurine. My doctor's appt. is in an hour.
I am trying to stick to the WW core plan, I have been terrible thru my Paul ordeal and have not been eating well, so I am going to give it my all and focus on getting into good running shape thru my diet and running. It is fun to have so many of you with the same goals and share tips and keep each other motivated!
I think we should have a Bloggers Winter Getaway in St. George in Jan and do the Painters Half!!! Just putting it out there!!!!
Have a great week!!!
Okay here is the report from the Podiatrist!
I had a nice talk with the Doc and told him the story, he said I am doing EVERYTHING right! All the advice I got from bloggers and friends and the PT have helped. Here is a list of things he said I should do ( I have been doing all of them) and my feet are feeling much better.
#1 never go barefoot or wear flip flops! But, he looked at my "fit-flops" and said they are fine.
#2 wear your insoles in all your shoes ( I do!)
#3 if you are feeling pain, cut back on miles until they feel better ( I did !)
#4 run on trails when ever possible (I do!)
#5 ice heels ( I do!)
#6 stretch feet thru exersize ( I need to do a little more of this)
#7 he said the Z-coils are great for short slow runs and walks and around the house
#8 take Ibuprofen for inflamation ( I do)
#9 I have saved the best for last he said I can run the TOU and ST. George and the OV50!!!! He said if I have pain, slow down or drop out, but basically he said "GO GIRL!!!
Oh, also he said if they should get worse we can do cortizone shots, but he doesn't think I will need to if I do all of the above.
I feel much better! Thanks again everyone for all the PF tips!! I really do feel I am managing it well and I am not going to let it be an excuse to stop running!!
| |
| |
Did a 5:30 am run with the chicks, they are getting so fast! I can barely keep up with them, they are carrying on conversations and I am panting in the back. Oh, to be young again! It is good for me. The chicks, Jen, Desiree and Lisa are all doing their first marathon sat (TOU)they are nervous, I guess that is to be expected, but they are so ready, they will do great and have a nice finish. I on the other hand will send my chicks along and then moosey on down the road at a very slow pace to save my heels for St. George. It will so much fun to hang out the night before and do the expo and the pasta dinner and then ride the bus to the start line in the morning. I think they will all break 5 hours, I willl be happy with anything, a finish would be nice!
Sounds like Lisa is up for Painters, I forgot to check with the other chicks!
| |
An easy short run to Willowcreek with the chicks. Jenny's mom drove us home. Tomorrow we are going for a walk and then take a break Friday. Sat. is TOU!
My heels are feeling pretty good. Could it be the Birkies???
On a side note, Paul had a siezure last night had to go to the hospital. Apparently this is normal for a stroke victim, but it sure was hard to take another set back.
| |
The chicks and I did a 3.77 mile walk, tomorrow we head up for Logan. I am excited to try TOU! It will be a fun time with the girls!!!
Okay, I just went back to WW after playing hooky for 2 months, I let it slide since Paul had his stroke. I was down a 1/2 pound. I am now 4.8 pounds away from my goal. I need to just get this done! I have been going to WW since last Nov. to lose 10 pounds, I am a dirty rotton cheater! I usually put on weight with a marathon, so I am going to have to really watch it this weekend. Any ideas? I guess I just need to not have the post pig out celebration, that might help.
| |
I am heading off to Logan today! No running, resting up and carbo loading ( I am doing a light carbo load). I am trying to see if I can do this marathon without gaining 5 pounds! It is going to be a fun time!
| Race: |
Top of Utah (26.2 Miles) 00:05:33
Top of Utah kicked my butt! I haven't been this sore and tired after a race in years. I think my 2 months of dealing with PF and cutting back and my worries with Paul had a huge impact. Friday night the chicks and I (Desiree, Lisa, and Jen) went to the expo and pasta dinner. It was really fun. My daughter Jana that lives up there joined us. We laughed and took pictures and had a blast. That night Desiree gave each one of us gift certificates for pedicures at the Shirodhara Day Spa. I had given the girls each running shirts with the "The Running Chicks" on the back so we could run as a team.
We were worried about the weather, and I talked the girls into really bundling up, but it wasn't necessary. The weather was beautiful from start to finish.
We started out together and stayed together for about 9 miles averaging about an 11:30 pace. I could tell from the get go I was going to have a hard time. My legs didn't warm up until about mile 3 and from 3 to 9 I felt okay, but at mile 9 I was wishing I was done. Not a good thing!! The chicks had 2 potty stops and that gave me a chance to get ahead a bit, they had to wait in line, so I took off. I ran with some cute ladies from Toole for most of the race. At mile 14 or so I had a big cheering squad, Lisa and Jen's husbands were there with other family member and cheered for me and gave me high 5s. It was a much needed boost, I was really struggling. They drove the back roads of the course and got out to cheer us on about 5 times. I can't tell you how helpful that was! I kept thinking any minute the chicks would catch up and at about mile 18 or 19 Desiree passed me up. From mile 19 on I felt exhausted, and had to do quite a bit of walking.
I think I crossed the finish at 5:33, the clock said 5:35, but we didn't cross over the starting line until 2 minutes after the gun went off. Jen and Lisa were only 2 minutes behind me. Jenny had horrible knee pain, and Lisa was a rock star to hang with her and keep her company.
It was a great time. I am totally pooped. And my thoughts on TOU is that it is an okay race. The 14 miles down the canyon were wonderful, but weaving around the city was not so fun. I think the Ogden Marathon is much much better, and I am big fan of St. George. TOU was just medicore in my book.
I survived, I am a little nervous about St. George, I am going to have to be happy with a slower time this year I think.
You should check out Lisa's blog, she may give better details.
| | Today is a rest day! I am still feeling the marathon, this is a very slow recovery for me. The last 3 years my recovery from marathon has been really quick and painless. My game plan between today and St. George is to just walk this week. Hopefully Sat. I will feel like a 5 or 6 mile easy run, and then I will see how I feel next week and go from there. If anyone has any specific ideas for running 2 marathons back to back and hurting like the dickens after the first one, I would appreciate any suggestions!! I plan to ice some...... any other ideas? | |
| |
This morning I woke up feeling MUCH better! But, it was dark outside and so cozy in my bed, that I slept in, it feels good to pamper myself a bit inbetween marathons. I am going to go to Provo to walk with my friend Ann and will come back and post the miles.
Maurine has decided not to do the OV50 miler, so I am going to back out as well. I have been stressing over it all summer, but thought if Maurine was going to attempt it I would too, but now there is no reason to do it. Maybe next year.... maybe never.... who knows? I have enjoyed doing 50ks and plan on doing the Red Mountain 50k again next April in St. George. I think that has been my all time favorite run ever. Great people organizing it, super friendly, awesome course, beautiful scenery.
Have a great day! Ann and I did a 4 mile walk up the Provo River Parkway, nice weather and great company!
| |
| |
Went out for a short easy run to get the legs working again, went pretty well. I have been off Vitamin I for two days and the heels were a tiny bit tender, but nothing too bad.
Maurine and I are planning to do a 6 1/2 mile hike/run up Big Cottonwood Canyon to Desolation Lake, if anyone wants to join us. It may be our last dry trail run before we get hit with snow!! Then Breakfast at Silver Fork. We would love your company!! Laurie and Chris, come join us!!!!
Maurine and I ended up doing the Cottonwood trail after work, Maurine was speedy Gonzales and I shuffled, it felt good to move my legs a bit.
| |
| | Did a short run thru the neighborhood. The heels are little tender, but I will be fine for St. George, nothing a little Vit. I can't fix. Dropped a couple of pounds, but still feel very heavy. I need to really focus on my diet this week and get in all my water. | |
| |
I ran with Maurine today. It is always fun to run with her, she is one happy gal! She always has the game plan down, the rest stops figured out and I just tag along like a puppy, a pooped puppy though. I am just not quite there as far as being in shape goes. For the last 2 months, my runs have felt sluggish and I am huffing and puffing like an old 53 year woman ( oh, yeah I am 53!) But, the show will go on and I will be fine in St. George. Maurine and I are going to try for a time of 5:15, she will make it fine, if she doesn't have those darn bathroom issues like last year, and I will just try my very best to keep up with her. She is a good pacer and very encouraging. Yes, that is my game plan....stick with Maurine!!!!
Okay ONE MORE WEEK TO GO!!! Stay healthy everyone!!!!
| |
Ran up hill for a mile and then down, 3 miles total , my mile splits were 1-13:20 2- 11:20 3- 11:29
I need to get off 4 pounds to be at my pre TOU weight
5 more days to go!!!!! I am going to go look for dipping chocolate for my gummi bears!!
I am starting back on regular doses of Vit. I today, the heels are trying to talk to me. Thanks for the gentle reminder Maurine!
Okay, I went out with Maurine tonight and did the same 3 mile loop and these were our splits, 1-12:13 2- 10:41 3-10:19 Maurine finished about 1 min before me and then took Odee out for another mile. Now I need to start tapering. I am going to do 3 miles tomorrow, and then decide how to finish up the week.
Today was a PERFECT day of nutrition and running!! I hope the scale cooperates tomorrow!!
| |
| |
Did a slow 2.20 run through the neighborhood. I was bummed I woke up and was only down .2 pounds after having a perfect day. Oh, well.... I am going to enjoy my taper this week!
Have a great day everyone!
| |
I took a nice easy run this morning. Great weather. I am really getting excited about St. George. Fun, family, friends, and I love Snow Canyon. It is always a good time.
I dropped 1.6 pounds!!!! I am 2 1/2 pounds away from my TOU weight!
Is anyone out there looking forward to the debate tomorrow? It is probably not a good idea to talk politics, I seem to get myself in trouble when ever I voice my opinion, so I will shut up right now.
Have a great day!!! | |
| |
I decided to sleep in today. My heels have been more sore than normal so I am sparing them the pounding. I am doing Vit. I 3 times a day until the marathon and am going to ice several times a day. The weight stayed the same today, had I run it would have been down a bit, but I really need to work on my feet.
Tomorrow we head off!! | |
| Race: |
St. George marathon (26.2 Miles) 00:02:45
This was my 12th St. George marathon and it was CRAZY!!! We got off the bus and it was raining and never stopped. Maurine and I huddled together next to a fence clad in trash bags. We took off together and stayed together for 7 miles. I was struggling from the get go, as I did with TOU, my breathing was very labored from the get go, my heels and knees were sore, and the rain was relentless! I had on 2 shirts and a parka and a trash bag, the trash bag was leaky, so I chucked that, then the parka was soaked and chucked that and then I chucked my long sleeve shirt and ran in my polar fleece pants that were saoking wet and my short sleeve running shirt. The wind was blowing in my face and I was freezing. Maurine took off up Veyo and I walked and felt like crap. I kept plugging and sloshing along until about mile 12 1/2 and thought, okay, this is nuts I am so cold and miserable, I am going to DNF at 13 and be done with it.
At mile 13 I told the aid station I was dropping out and they put me in a warm car to wait for the next "wiennie bus". There was another fellow in the car shivering cold, he was about 25 and looked like death warmed over, he said he was running for his dad that was 73 years old and had passed away and was spreading his ashes along the way, he hadn't trained and was a mess, he was in a pair of short shorts and a singlet. I asked him if he wanted my polar fleece pants that I bought yesterday with Maurine ( we had matching Walmart pants we bought yesterday for the anticipated bad weather). He was so grateful! I was so happy to give the guy my pants, and felt like something good was coming out of this miserable day.
We got into the shuttle, it was packed with runners, we were sitting on each others laps. As we drove down the course super slow with runners all over the road, runners would hit on the window of the car begging us for a ride, it felt like some end of the world movie, it was pretty freaky. The shuttle driver said that there was not enough ambulances to pick up all the runners with hypothermia.
We got to the park and got dropped off, and after being in the warm van, I was SUPER cold and dripping wet looking for my husband, it was soooo pathetic.
My ipod stopped working after 3 songs, my phone was completely messed up, the face of my garmin fell off, and for the first time in 12 St. George Marathons, my clothes bag was not in the retrival area.
My hubby took me to In and Out for burgers, took me back to the condo, and I had a jetted hot bubble bath and then a fabulous massage and a nice long nap.
I felt good about dropping out, I think had I continued I could have had some serious problems, but now as I write this I am so glad I had the sense to drop and do a half marathon.
I am excited to read all your blogs. For those of you that finished the marathon you are AMAZING!!!!
| |
Now that my runs are done for the year, I am going to focus on getting these last few pounds off and following Sashas plan to run 4 miles 6 times a week.
I have been thinking a bit about my DNF in ST. George and I have decided it was really very liberating to think that I could drop out without feeling quilty, I think being 53 years old and all the marathons under my belt made it easy for me to say " okay, this one is not working for me today, I'm done". I had a great weekend with my husband, a fun story to tell, and am looking forward to my next run in the Spring. I think my Give a Damn got Busted and it was all Good!!! Thanks Marion for introducing me to my new favorite song!!!
| |
| |
Today is the beginning of my new post marathon plan. 4 miles 6 days a week and following the core plan! I am embaressed at the weight I have gained over these last 2 weeks with TOU and St. George.
My garmins face fell off while running in St. George so I am guessing, I think I did 4 miles in 46 min. I did exactly what Sasha recommended, no walking breaks, just a nice easy pace I could maintain for 4 miles.
Today I am 12.2 pounds away from my goal. YIKES!!! How did I let that happen???? I really feel it!!!
As far as stiffness, I feel pretty good, but then I only did a half a marathon....
Hope all you St. Georgers are taking it easy for a few days!!!!!
| |
I did my 4 mile loop, the heels were tender, I was one minute slower today. It took 47 min. I need to do more cross training.... I need another hour or more of exersize. I am trying to figure out how all you young moms get so many hours in a day. I think I need to get up earlier and stop being such a whimp!
Nutrition was good yesterday.
9.8 lbs away from my goal! (2.4 lb. loss from yesterday)
| |
| |
I ran with the chicks this morning. I did an honest 4 miles in 52 min. My guessing on Mon and Tue were off a bit. These chicks will keep me on the right track! A great morning run, I am going to plan on going with them every Monday, I will enjoy having that to look forward to..
My nutrition was at about a 7 yesterday, too much diet coke and not enough water.
9.2 pounds away from my goal ( down .6 from yesterday)
| |
The heels are sure acting up, but I am not going to stop running, I think I need to go get the plantar brace thing from Wasatch Running, my friend Ardath said it is helping her. I figure 4 miles a day can't hurt my feet, so I am not quitting. I have stopped taking Vit. I, I am trying to save that for long runs and races, my hubby is afraid it will ruin my stomach. I will figure this out yet.
I need to send my garmin in, I am not sure of my time this morning, forgot to look at the clock before I ran out the door.
My nutrition was good except for the pink cookie Jen brought me and my Cafe Rio Salad...okay, I guess my nutrition was pretty lame.... but I got away without gaining, today I will Nazi about my nutrition!
9.1 away from my goal ( .1 down from yesterday) Whew! That was close!!
| |
4 mile run up to the Canyon Raquet Club and back.
Nutrition was pretty good yesterday, about an 8, but the scale didn't show me any love.....
9.0 to goal ( .1 down from yesterday)
My big test is to see if I can get thru the weekend without blowing it. I have a birthday party Sunday.
I am looking forward to a chilly Breast Cancer run/walk tomorrow!
Everyone have a great weekend!!
PS I took my Vit. I and my heels felt much better, plus recommited to doing my exersizes! I love doing the ice, so I am faithful about that. I will get this taken care of!!
| |
Yoohoo! A fun morning with Marion, Maurine and Kelli at the Breast Cancer walk at Liberty park. It was fun to meet Kelli in real life! We lucked out on the weather, it started raining just as we finished.
Harold and I and Odee walked, while the other girls ran. It was great, a lot of people came out to support Breast Cancer, it was fun to be a part of all the excitement.
We loved the signs.... Bosom Buddies and Save Second Base, everyone sure had a positive attitude!
Thanks Marion for letting us be a part of the event!

Harold and I just followed Kunfublondes instructions on inserting pictures. This is Paul in the hospital, with Bus the horse dog.
This morning was my run with the chicks, Jen and Lisa and I. They run a little faster than I do when I run solo, so I am panting like an old woman, it is good for me. It was 36 degrees when we started. I bundled up enough that it wasn't that bad.
I made it thru the weekend without gaining weight! Yesterday was tough, because I wasn't the greatest Friday night (Iggys) and Sat. So on Sunday whent they passed around the chocolate in RS I passed it up, and then at the Birthday Party I took a 32 oz. diet coke to keep my mouth occupied. It worked!
8.3 pounds away from goal (down .7 from Friday)
Oh, I have a private swim lesson today at noon, and then I am doing Zumba at 7:00pm, I am trying to do a class at the rec center every weeknight at 7:00 They have Zumba on Mon. and Wed. and Yoga on Tue. and Thur. I am going to check out the yoga, if there are men in it, I am going to try and talk Harold into joining me. I am not sure he will go for it or not.
Okay, I am too depressed to do Zumba, I would die of embaressment if I started panting in class.... BUT I did go have my private swim lesson and the teacher said I was pretty good, she gave me a few tips on my form, so there is some good news.

| |
This morning I did muscle up finally! I haven't done it since Paul got injured. I only had time afterwards for a 2 mile run, I took it real slow, but I am alittle nervous now with all the talk on my blog yesterday, it is all good though, I am glad you all are looking out for me.
The scale went up .7 pounds this morning, but I had a great day of healthy eating so I am not too concerned.
9 pounds away from my goal.
Now off to sit with Paul for the afternoon! Thanks again for all your comments yesterday! you guys are the best!!!
Did Yoga with Harold in the evening, he really liked it! We are going to try and do it twice a week together.
| |
40 degrees when I went out, that felt perfect, funny for a winter hating California girl to say, but it did feel great. I kept it slow and felt fine.
Maurine and I are planning a 5K tempo run down Millcreek Sat., I am looking forward to that. Anyone interested?
8.4 pounds away from goal
| |
I did muscle up this morning. It feels good to get some strength training in, it is my weakness for sure.
Tonight I am going to yoga again, I made Harold try it Tue. night and he really enjoyed it, so we are going to make it a part of our winter routine.
Not sure I will get a run in today, but I do have my doctors appt today, I will be glad to get it over with. Thank you my dear friends!
8.4 from goal (same as yesterday, but again, I had a great day of nutrition so I am okay with that)
| |
Okay, I went to the doctor yesterday to check on my panting while running. They did blood work, which I haven't got the results to yet. They did a chest xray and a EKG and both of those looked great. I have a stress test scheduled next thur. at St. Marks, the doctor thinks everything is fine, and if the stress test is alright, she will give me clean bill of health and I can do whatever I want. I had a hunch it was a combination of the stress and worry over Paul and cutting back on my runs due to the PF. I was up 6 pounds since my last doctor appt. afew months ago, so all of this contributed to my lack of energy and fatigue. I am glad that I had this check up, it is good to know this old girl is healthy just a little chubby and out of shape, nothing I can't take care of. So watch out! I am going to work hard this winter and be ready for a great year of running come spring! Thanks girls for encouraging me to check things out, it has given me peace of mind!!! You are all such great friends!!
This morning I did 4 miles up to Wasatch Blvd and back, nice and easy.
Last night Harold and I went to yoga! What a cute husband I have, and he is actually MUCH better at it than I am.
7.6 away from goal
Went on a great 4 mile hike with Kim S. on one of the new trails up Corner Canyon this afternoon, what a beautiful day!!! I think it was called Jacobs Ladder? Not sure...
| Race: |
1st Millcreek Invitational 5K (3.11 Miles) 00:26:42, Place overall: 2, Place in age division: 1
Maurine and I did our first Millcreek 5K. Our time was 26.42 We drove up to Log Haven and ran down the canyon. Maurine was a great pacer, she provided great motivational tips and music entertainment for my running pleasure. She sang the Rocky Theme and Stayin' Alive ( she was thinking she might have to do CPR since I was breathing so hard). Maurine stayed right by side the whole time and even got me to sprint at the end with a bribe of breakfast if I could pass her....almost! We finished together. That was great for my self esteem to think I could go that fast, the only time I ever ran that fast was with Maurine on the Antelope Island 50K, when I thought that a buffalo was chasing me. We are hoping to do the same route and try and keep shaving off our time. It was SO much fun!! Hopefully we can get afew more of you to join us next time! Check out Tarzans blog, I am sure she will have the splits, my garmin is still in the shop.
7.3 from goal

Nice easy run on my regular route to Wasatch Blvd and back. 53 mins. Felt easier than all my runs last week, maybe I am slowly coming back.

I had a great time in Misquite with my mom and cousin, we played the penny slot machines and sat by the pool and read and had a pumpkin facial with cranberries! Pretty festive! A great girl trip and very relaxing. I walked in the morning, but took a break from running. It was wonderful.
This morning I did muscle up and will do yoga this evening. I have a full day of catch up from being away. So I need to get busy! At some point I will go check on all your blogs, but it may take a while to catch up. Hope you all are doing well!

Maurine and Odee and I did a beautiful fall trail run on the Pipeline this morning. I hope we can hang on to this great weather for a few weeks! Check out Maurines blog, she did a fast one miler down the canyon.

Did my regular route up to Wastach Blvd. and back. It felt easier than all my runs last week, maybe I am slowly coming back.

4 slow miles today....gotta get to work.....have a great day!

I ran along Danish Road today, decided to do 5 instead of 4, did a little walking. Beautiful weather! It took 1:07
5.8 from goal! ( the scale finally made a move!) This is where it gets really hard, the last 5 freaking pounds. Help me help me, tonight is a girls night out at La Cocina! I will be good, I will be good!!!!
I am really looking forward to Sat. to do our Day After Halloween 10 Miler!! What should I bring? I hear Marions bring hot chocolate and Keli muffins and Jon chocolate covered bacon ( yicks!!)

Beautiful Morning! The skies were orange and pink, it was fun to watch the sun come up, and 4 deer ran across the road right in front of me. I was listening to IZ on my ipod, it was great. I cut off one minute doing the same route I did yesterday. 1:06
5.7 from goal I was happy with that, only a .1 drop from yesterday, but at this point anything is good, not gaining is good. I was super good last night at my girls night out, not one single chip entered my chubby little cheeks. Tonight is a Halloween party with the family and I will do the same thing! I am feeling very optimistic. I am so excited for tomorrows run!!!
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!!!!!

This morning Harold and I got up early and picked up Maurine at 6:20 and took off to Lehi for the After Halloween 10 Miler with the bloggers. It was a great time!! I agree with Kelli, we all need to move into the same neighborhood so we can do this daily!! There is nothing more fun that meeting up with a bunch of running buddies and spending the morning together! It was fun to start in the dark and watch the sun come up. It was a beautiful morning. Hopefully Harold can figure out how to post some pictures. Thanks Marion for organizing it, and thanks Kelli for the delicious muffins!! It was great to meet you all!!!!
Harold just figured this photo thing out, here is my 70's picture!

This morning I ran in a full blown snow storm, it was really nice, I put on my YakTracs and took off, I went a little longer this morning and did some walking, I can't believe how much I enjoyed the winter weather. I was really happy this morning, I was so touched by our new Presidents speech last night. I am excited to see what kind of changes he brings to our country. It is a beautiful morning.

Did a super slow run today. The garmin pooped out on me and so did the ipod. I think the cold temps. are the culprit. I just got my rebuilt garmin and am having problems. Maybe I need to go buy the new fancy one that looks more like a watch. Maybe Santa will bring me one if I am a good girl.
Note: I had on my Yaktax today and slipped several times, last year I wore them on trails and they are great, but you do get some slipage on the black ice, so beware. I still like them alot, I would never attempt running on the streets without them, but they are not foolproof. I may try and get Harold to put the screws on my shoes and see if I get better traction.
I love the idea about the duct tape, thanks who ever mentioned it, I think it may have been Teena. I love all the bloggers tips! You guys are the best.
Maurine and I are planning on the Sat. 15 miler! So never fear your sweepers are here!!!

This morning I drove to Holladay and did a flater course than normal and tried to put in a little more effort than normal. When I run alone I tend to be pretty pokie ( Kelli you started that one !:) I need to remember how good it feels to push my self just a little harder.
3 miles Average pace 11:14 ( 10:41, 11:17, 11:40)
7.5 ( CRAP!) | |
| | I ran the same route I did yesterday and my average pace was about 4 seconds slower, but still a faster pace than I have been doing for the last few months. 8.0 from goal ( Remind me not to go to a Food Fest at R.S. ever again, I had a bite of everything and was so stuffed, I took off before they offered the buffet of sinfully delicious desserts, or my story could have been much worse!) I went to Muscle-Up this morning. Yeah for me! I hate it, but it is so good for me. Strength training is my missing link in my fitness routine that is for sure. I am going to really try to get back on track and do it on a regular basis.
I took Odee for a walk over at the Old Mill Resivour ( sorry for the spelling)

I did my Holladay run this morning. I dressed really light, one long sleeve shirt and a vest, no gloves and no hat. Maurine, you would be so proud of me. It was cold but do-able. It was my fastest run this week. 33:05
mile 1- 10:39
mile2- 11:19

Today was a PERFECT running day. Harold and I picked up Maurine and went to Starbucks for hot chocolate and then met Britta, Scott, Kelli and Jon A in Lehi. Odee was so excited to be running with all his new running friends that he kind of went crazy for a minute and plowed me over, I skinned my knee and elbow, but was fine after I got up and brushed myself off. The weather was perfect. I absolutely loved this trail, flat and very quiet, we saw afew fellow runners but that was it. Odee was in heaven running between Harold and I and Maurine.
Harold has been thinking about starting to run again, he did 2 marathon with me when we first met, but he has had knee surgery and has been a tile setter for years and his knees were trashed, but now he is estimating and off his knees and thinks he will start running again. I got on his bike and he ran for a 1/2 mile, he did great and felt good. This is a good plan, I will jump on his bike and we can slowly increase his mileage, it gives me a bit of a break too.
It was a great day! My average pace was 13:17, we had to stop several times to give Odee drinks.
Sorry we didn't get pictures of the speedy youngsters today! Next time, and thanks for including us, you guys are awesome!

I had a great 4 mile run in Holladay, I have enjoyed the flater route, it is worth the 5 min. drive to get there.

Today is the first day of the winter season for me at my job at the Cliff Spa at Snowbird. I work as a massage therapist. I have done this for almost 15 years. I just do it part time in winter for some extra play money, and now that I am married, Harold is a big skiier and boarder,he gets a season pass ( I think that is why he married me- free season pass, free massages and free haircuts!#$) I hate skiing, give me the beach any day! I really tried to get into it the first 2 winters I met Harold, but it was just too miserable and I am done with that. Anyway, I am scheduled to work Tue and Wed , the slowest days of the week, and if I don't have an appt. I don't have to go in. Most of the time I will be called off, I have lost most of my seniority because I am now just a seasonal employee, which is exactly how I like it. So basically Harold gets a ski pass and I, for the most part, have 2 days off a week, the rest of the week I work out of my home doing hair and massage. I LOVE having 2 days off in the middle of the week. Alot of times, I have to call every hour, so I can't really plan anything, but if it is super slow they will tell me that I am called off for the day. So I am hoping to get called off today and go to Park City and run the rail trail with Odee and then maybe look around at the Outlets!
I will post the rest of my miles this afternoon, I took Odee on a 2 mile run around the park this morning.
6.8 from goal
Park City was gorgous, HOT and SUNNY! I went on the trail around the Swaner Natural Preserve, which is part of the Park City Marathon route. I ended up doing about half of it walking, just enjoyed my lollygaggling! I didn't find anything at the outlets, but got a fabulous salad at the Wholefoods store! Now I am going to do weights at the rec center. Yes you heard me weights, I hate weights, but I am going over there right now and doing it!!!!
I DID MY WEIGHT TRAINING TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!
Went to Yoga with Harold at 7:00 tonight!

I ran a slightly different route this morning. I parked at the Tuscany and ran 2 miles out on Holladay Blvd. and back. I felt a little more tired than usual, but not bad, I think it was due to the 3 hours of working out yesterday. The route also has a few more little hills, but not much, well okay, only one and it is tiny, I am such a baby. It took me 50:47 ( I did a little walking too) My average pace was 12:42. It will be fun to see how many seconds I can shave off that time.
I am going to go take Odee out now for a walk so I will adjust my miles later.

My run was the pits this morning, my heel hurt like heck, so I had to run like a spaz and tip toe on my left foot, I got half way thru the run and realized I booked an early haircut and had to try and pick up my pathetic pace to get home fast.

Just a quick 3 mile run today, not in the mood to do anything more, if Maurine is feeling up to it we are doing 13 miles tomorrow on the Parkway, she has been feeling a little sick, so if she bails I am okay, I haven't had a break in running for a while. Today is Maurines Birthday, everyone wish her a Happy One!!!! We are celebrating by going to see Twilight tonight and then going to the Asian Star!!!! Party!!!!!
3 miles 34:46 min. Avg. Pace 11:38
5.9 from goal ( not too shabby for going out to dinner last night!!) Tonight will be harder, Asian Star is one of my favorite places ever!!!
Everyone have a wonderful weekend, and all you injured and sick ones ( Crap! I think that is all of you!) Be careful and stay safe and run smart and be healthy and I love you all!!!
| | Okay this a short entry, I have tried twice to post it and it disapeared. Harold and Odee and I met Maurine at the Parkway. Harold and I did 10 miles. He was on his bike but got off to run and did 1.50 miles, he is slowly building up. Maurine went on to do 13. It was a beautiful fall day. | |
| | My friend Kim and I went to take the dogs on walk up Corner Canyon and ended up going about 5 miles. They have got so many new trails up there, I am excited to do some more exploring. We saw several runners and lots of mountain bikers. | |
| |
Did a slow 4 mile run this morning along Danish Road. It was 27 degrees this morning and I was surprised that it felt just fine.
I am not posting my weight on a daily basis, it is making me crazy! If I can maintain my present weight thru the holidays I will be a happy girl! Here's to a great holiday season!!!!
| |
Today is a Snowbird day, so I have to call every hour and see if I get an appt. I doubt I will go up, but just in case I do, I can't schedule appts. at home ( oh, poor me, bless my heart!) So I lounged around until 8:30 before I got my lazy butt out for a run. I picked up the pace from yesterdays zombie run a bit.
3 miles Total time 34:01 Avg. pace 11:21 mile 1- 10:51 mile 2- 11:24 mile 3- 11:45
Now I am going to do weights and then head over to the spa and 30 min. on the eleptical (unless I have to go to Snowbird)
You have to check out Marions blog she has a great video!!!!

No running today! I had to start my work day early to get my cute little ladies all done up for the holidays. I am heading out of town today to go to my folks cabin in Torrey. I can hardly wait to get on the road. I am not planning on doing any running at all, but will be hiking everyday with the family. I want to wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving! If you are travelling, be safe! Have fun on the 20 miler and do a mile for me!!
| |
Here are some pictures of me being a tough robust woman picking up my man.
And than I threw him on the ground. Don't mess with me!
Our weekend in Torrey started out to be so much fun, we played games, hiked, and enjoyed each others company, but it ended very quickly when Paul had a siezure in the car after a little hiking trip. He ended up having 5 seizures and taking an ambulance ride back to SLC last night. This morning he had another brain surgery and seems to be doing well. It was very frightening. Hug your loved ones and be grateful for good health.
This is a picture of Julie and Paul about 45 minutes before he has his seizure. You would never know that so much trouble was brewing
| | I am in the hospital, I was watching Paul and he had a horrible seizure that lasted about a half hour, there were about 16 people in the room trying to get it under control, they finally took him still seizing to have a cat scan and then he will go back to ICU, he was in a normal room looking forward to a release. I will keep you posted on his results. Sorry this is rushed and I am scared. | |
| |
It was a nice run this morning, it will probably be another day in the hospital, I am glad I got my run in, it makes the day go alot better.
4:05 miles Avg. Pace 12:09
| |
Did my same route I did yesterday, it was odd, I felt like I pushed harder, but it was almost exactly the same time. My average pace was 12:10, yesterday it was 12:09. It is hard to believe last July I ran a half marathon with an average pace of 10:33, I don't think I will be able to pull that off for Painters. That's okay with me, I enjoy my slow runs too. ( I say that like a 10:33 is fast, but it really is for me! I thought I was Wonderwoman!)
ARe you all getting Christmasy? I am going to decorate and put up my tree today!!!! I am also going to go see Paul and Julie today! Have a wonderful day!
| |
This is my 3rd day doing the same route. I finally cut off a little time. One thing that helped was not overdressing ( yes, Maurine, you can say, " I told you so!" How much longer can this fabulous weather last?? It was perfect!
4 miles 46:43 Avg. Pace 11:41
Paul is back home now! He is on 3 anti seizure meds for the moment, hopefully that will do the trick.
Have a great day! I hope Keli has posted her quote, it is always a great way to start the day!! Did anyone go get their shake? :)
| |
I went to the gym today! That is pretty big for me, because I would really rather be outside running. I did strength training and 3 miles on the eliptical machine.
I have a full day today and our first Christmas Party tonight! My parents are coming up from Torrey and we have the house all decorated for Christmas. Paul hasn't had a seizure and so life is GREAT!!! I hope you all have a fun festive weekend!!!
| |
A quick run before a busy day. Julie, Paul's wife has organized a service project to give items to a homeless shelter, so we are off to deliever and go have breakfast with my family.
Odee is doing 11 miles with Maurine today on Antelope Island.
Have a wonderful weekend!
****still no seizures!****

| | Muarine and I did a nice hike up to the Bells Canyon Resivour. It was a nice change from running, it is always nice to get out and chat with my dear friend! Thanks Maurine! I love you! | |

I read Marion's blog yesterday and she had a goal of 35 miles this week and I thought it sounded like a good goal for me to, so thanks Marion!
I beat the storm! I ran Holladay Blvd., a fairly flat course, I am going to run it all week if I can and see how my times look.

My focus this week is to do two a days, run in the morning and then at least 30 min. at the gym at night with Harold. It is so easy to sit our fannies on the couch at night and be lazy old folks, so this is our mission! Last night we went to the gym and did 30 min. on the elipitical machine.
This morning I did a muscle up class ( this deserves a huge hoorah!) One hour of pure hell. Then since it was so icy out and I was already at the gym I did 3 miles on the treadmill, it took me 37 min., I couldn't go any longer, it was so painfully boring. Just plain ol' gave up. My give a damn got busted! ( Oh, do I love that phrase and song!) I will go to the gym tonight and get the rest of my miles in. I hope no one slipped on the ice this morning, and for those of you who ventured out, Yeah for you!!!!

I called Maurine last night and asked her if she would help pace me for a "tempo" run, I have been running for years at my own slow pace and haven't paid much attention to all these training methods. Maurine tried to explain a tempo run to me, but she got all fancy and most of it went over my head. All I got out of it is a tempo run is a fast one, not a lollygag one. So as far as I understand, I did a tempo run Monday, but I didn't do as "smart" as I did it with Maurine's expert guidance this morning. On Monday, I took off fast and ran out of steam at the end. I did do an avg. pace of 11:57 ( I think that was what it was). So here is my report of this mornings run!
I met Maurine at LaCocina at 6:15 this morning. She said we are going to start with mile long warm up at about a 13 min. pace. We did. Then she said we are going to try and maintain an 11:00 min. mile pace for 3 miles and then a cool down of a 13min. mile for the last mile. We did. She was right on! At mile 4 she had me push to a level 9 effort and told me to keep it up for a 1/4 mile and I kept it up for a bit and then got so out of breath that I had to slow down. Thank you Maurine!!!!! It was a fabulous run and well worth the bribe of a hot chocolate!!!!

It aint happening today! I made it to muscle up this morning, and I am swamped at work and have family obligations tonight. My 35 mile goal just got busted!
Have fun baking and shopping and getting all Christmassy ( That is the Sara Palin in me!!!Baaahahahahaha!!!)

I got up early to run so I could come home and get online and try and get Wicked tickets, but when I got back I couldn't find anything under $200, so it was all for nothing. I even cut my run short.
4 miles Time 50:07 13:02/ 12:18/ 12:32/ 12:13
I hope everyone has a nice long run tomorrow!

Harold thought I was crazy this morning, he asked if I was going over to the gym to work out and I said, "No way! I'm hitting the road!" It was 22 degrees when I went out, pretty nippy! I had to wear my yaxtrax, there was lots of black ice, so I ran very cautiously, I can still slip in my yaxtrax, but they do help a lot.
I am worried about a new little pain in my foot, I have noticed it for acouple of weeks, but am always afraid to give it a voice for fear it will give it more power. But it goes around my heel and along side my foot. I still have PF( this is all on my left foot). I can usually run thru the pain pretty well, but it bothers me all day, especially when I get up from sitting. I have been told I have worn down the pads on my feet, due to age and running for so many years, I wonder if I have done something to the bone. Oh, well, if it continues I will get it checked out.
5 miles 1:07 | |
| | It is snowing hard! I went to muscle -up, I am not sure if I will get my run in today or not. I think my foot will enjoy a vacation today. | |
| |
I thought it was 18 degrees this morning, but got in the car to drive to my flatter route and it was 14!!!! I was plenty warm except for my fingers, I kept telling myself I would go to REI this morning and then I drove home and put on some old ski gloves and ran in my neighborhood and it they were toasty and warm. To heck with paying the big bucks and having cool gloves, on those days it drops below 20, I will wear my old puffy ski gloves that have been sitting in a box unused in years! My new Black Diamond jacket kept me toasty. This morning I wore my silk long underwear from REI (they are super thin) and then a cool max shirt and regular running pants and my new jacket, it is amazing how comfortable you can be with the right gear. Oh, I had on a head band and a beanie and a gaiter too. TAAA DAA!!! I wanted to make sure my gear was just right for the Bloggers Lehi run on SAT.!! I can't wait!
Have a great day!! | |
| |
I did muscle up this morning, I am thinking that by taking a break from running on Tue and Thur and doing muscle-up and yoga, my feet are going to thank me!
I am anxious to check on all your blogs and see what kind of winter runs you did today!
| |
This is hardly worth mentioning, but I did one mile on the indoor track at the gym, it is so windy and cold outside. I put off going so late, that was all I had time for. I really needed a good workout to make up for all the holiday treats I am enjoying, but oh, well, Happy Holidays!
I am pooping out on the run tomorrow in Lehi, I think it is going to be real windy and stormy. Good luck to you die hards that make it, I will be anxious to get your report. Drive safe too!
| | I thought I would wake up to blizzard, it looked pretty good out so Harold and I took Odee for a mile walk in the park, and then we walked over to the spa and did 2 miles around the track and watched the little kids below playing Jr. Jazz. We walked home and I felt like I had just warmed up and the weather was unbelieveably nice so I took off and did a 4 mile run. My heels were feeling pretty bad though, I was doing the tip-toe run and dodging ice, a very pokey pace, but I enjoyed my run outside. This was a super low mile week for me, I need to crank it up for Painters, I can't believe it is just around the corner, and I am not ready. | |
| |
A quick post before a busy day. 4 miles, it is a quess, I ran on the indoor track and did some eliptical and 50 sit ups.
Have a great day! | |
| | Muscle up is all today, gotta go to Costco and tie up all my lose ends! It's Christmas Eve tomorrow! Are you ready?? Have Merry Day today! | |
| |
I had a great run this morning. I wish I had brought shot blocs and water, I would have kept going but I was hungry and thirsty. I think today I am going to go buy myself a new fuel belt. I have never had one I have really liked, but I think I will try again
Merry Christmas everyone!!!!!! I hope you all enjoy this time with your families!!!!
| |
Merry Christmas!!! I got a fuel belt for myself yesterday and a case of shot blocks, and Harold got me a new Ipod for Christmas so I am all decked out for some great long runs this winter!
I am waiting for my children to come for brunch and then to go to my step kids house for dinner! I wish you all a wonderful day with your families. Thanks for the friendship, you all have become such great friends.
| |
I got up this morning to run, got all dressed up in my winter gear and yaxtracks and went to the park with Odee, I was the first person to walk into the park, virgin snow, no tracks, I was wading in snow up to my knees, took one loop around the park and said FORGET IT! Went home and have much munching on treats and lounging all day long! I want these holidays over, so I can get back on track!!
Tomorrow I am going to the oval with Maurine and Gary and shooting for 15 miles! Send your positive vibes my way, I am predicting great pain on the hard surface for these tender feet of mine! I told Maurine to bring bribes of treats and BIG WHIP!
| |
Ran the Olympic Oval with Maurine and Gary, it was great! It beat the outdoors all to heck today. The plan was 15, but in my heart I knew if I did 13 I would be happy, so at 13.50 I finished. We went to IHOP and had fun talking about all our running plans for 2009.
Harold and I went and saw Marley and Me. It was so cute!
| |
Got up early and left in the dark with my little head light and my new fuel belt and went for a run, I did my ultra pace, slow, but super enjoyable. It was warm enough I took off my hat and gloves. I spent the time thinking about the realistic New Years Resolutions I want to make. I am looking forward to a good 2009. 2008 was the most difficult year of my life, that of course was because of Paul's accident. Hopefully we will see some improvements with him and Ican jump into my running and have a good year with that too.
Have a great day! Painters is around the corner! I can hardly wait!
| | Did Muscle-up this morning, and now I am off to Snowbird for my first massage of the season! | |
| |
It looks like I have to go up to Snowbird again, just did a 1 mile jog around the park with Odee.
We are babysitting grandkids tonight. Hope you all have a Happy New Years!!!!
