Personal:

I started running at age 40 (14 years ago!)  I am married to Harold, he is a super supportive husband and we enjoy running and biking the trails along the Wasatch Front together. Between us we have 7 children and 9 grandchildren.  I am really having fun trying new races in scenic parts of Utah, I am a newbie in the ultrarunning world, I am slow, but love everything about it!  I have a lot to learn, but I am enjoying the journey.

I am running out of time!  My 50K is 17 days away!  I feel like a cow!  I must drop 10 pounds, I need to take drastic  measures!  This is going to be my venting page, please feel free to ignore me completly as I am going to get crazy  these next 17 days.

I got up this morning and the scale screamed at me!  I am at my highest weight in the last few years.  I am not sharing that number with you but will report my loss daily for the next 17 days.

This morning I ran 9.36 miles on the JRP with Gary, it was beautiful, we had a nice visit and I am ready for more miles.  I need to cut Paul's hair and then do another appt. and then I will get back out and get a few more miles in.  I plan to go to the rec center every evening and get at least another short workout in.  It stinks to get old, I eat less and better than I used to and still can not seem to drop the weight.  HELP!  If anyone has any tricks please share.  I need to burn more calories and go to bed hungry and onery I guess.

This morning I had a green smoothie before my run.  During and after my run I had some home made lowfat healthy little cookies made with quinoa, oats, whole wheat flour and flax seed)

4:00 pm update, I did a short hike with Odee on the Pipeline, bad call, I waded thru at least 6 inches of mud and slush.  I ate a banana on the way up in the car.  I am hoping to get in an evening work out at the gym.  So far my day has been good, I should drop acouple of pounds and then that is where it starts to get really tough.

9:30pm update, I had some turkey speghetti for dinner and then did 20 min. on the stationary bike at the rec center.   Today went well, hopefully I can keep this up tomorrow.

What race is this in 17 days?

I'm sure you'll be just fine. Keep focused and work hard and you'll be great. Your base fitness is there, you just need to mentally get there.

I wish I had a good miracle suggestion for you! I've always just kept a food journal when I get really serious about losing weight. I also feel that increasing my protein v. carb intake helps as well. Don't overdo it, but I simply make sure it's in a good 30/30/40 balance (30%fat 30%protein 40%carbs).

Good luck with your 2nd workouts, not eating after 7 or 8 (depending on your life schedule) will make a difference too. You've worked SO hard, that I'm sure the race will turn out great despite the scale!! Keep up your hard work...you're almost there!

Jun, it is the Red Mountain 50K, my favorite race of the year. Thanks for the positive words, I am going to work hard and see what I can accomplish.

Rad, I agree more protein less carbs, I know that will help! 2 workouts a day and going to bed hungry just might do it!!! I am determined!!!

From Smooth on Wed, Apr 07, 2010 at 18:54:42 from 174.23.201.210

I agree that you have a good fitness base and will do great in 17 days!

You're eating healthy. I just received an email from Real Age that suggest drinking a full glass of water BEFORE each meal is a great way to loose weight. Keep up the good work, you will get there!

From Scott Wesemann on Wed, Apr 07, 2010 at 18:55:01 from 66.239.250.209

leslie- I think you should just concentrate on getting yourself physically ready for the race with your workouts, and the weight will take care of itself. Your body will know where it needs to be.

I would worry about trying to lose weight by not eating when you're hungry because you could start to burn some of your muscle. I'm not an expert by any means, but I would think you would want to make sure you are giving your body everything it needs in order to perform the best it can.

You never know, the new weight could be added muscle. I think you are doing great with your workouts, so I would concentrate more on how you feel, and less on what the scale says... then again, I am a rookie when it comes to this. :)

good luck!

You are going to do great on the race!!! Just think of the calories you will lose while running 50 miles!!!

Follow your WW plan, it will work for you!

Scott and Kelli, thank you! I think just putting it out here on the blog will make me take this more seriously, I eat pretty good but not perfect. I need to be perfect for just 17 days. I know I need to fuel my body so I won't do anything too radical, I will just try to eat clean and healthy and work out like a maniac and see what happens. Thank you my friends! Oh, and Kelli, it is a 50K not a 50 miler.:)

Oh hi Smooth, I just saw your comment, thanks, I know water is huge I will try and make sure to get it all in! Thank you ever so much!! I hope you and Kelli are feeling good and ready for Boston!

From Kelli on Wed, Apr 07, 2010 at 19:33:48 from 71.219.92.128

50k, 50 miler, what is the difference?????

You will do great! I started posting my weight to keep me on my toes, too. It is great when you are losing it, not so fun when you are gaining it (having everyone know about it is so not fun!)
