Personal:

I started running at age 40 (14 years ago!)  I am married to Harold, he is a super supportive husband and we enjoy running and biking the trails along the Wasatch Front together. Between us we have 7 children and 9 grandchildren.  I am really having fun trying new races in scenic parts of Utah, I am a newbie in the ultrarunning world, I am slow, but love everything about it!  I have a lot to learn, but I am enjoying the journey.

This was my 12th  St.  George marathon and it was CRAZY!!!  We got off the bus and it was raining and never stopped.  Maurine and I huddled together next to a fence clad in trash bags.  We took off together and stayed together for 7 miles.  I was struggling from the get go, as I did with TOU, my breathing was very labored from the get go, my heels and knees were sore, and the rain was relentless!  I had on 2 shirts and a parka and a trash bag, the trash bag was leaky, so I chucked that, then the parka was soaked and chucked that and then I chucked my long sleeve shirt and ran in my polar fleece pants that were saoking wet and my short sleeve running shirt.  The wind was blowing in my face and I was freezing.  Maurine took off up Veyo and I walked and felt like crap.  I kept plugging and sloshing along until about mile 12 1/2 and thought,  okay, this is nuts I am so cold and miserable, I am going to DNF at 13 and be done with it.

At mile 13 I told the aid station I was dropping out and they put me in a warm car to wait for the next "wiennie bus".  There was another fellow in the car shivering cold, he was about 25 and looked like death warmed over, he  said he was running for his dad that was 73 years old and had passed away and was spreading his ashes along the way, he hadn't trained and  was a mess, he was in a pair of short shorts and a singlet.  I asked him if he wanted my polar fleece pants that I bought yesterday with Maurine ( we had matching Walmart pants we bought yesterday for the anticipated bad weather).  He was so grateful!  I was so happy to give the guy my pants, and felt like something good was coming out of this miserable day.

We got into the shuttle, it was packed with runners, we were sitting on each others laps.  As we drove down the course super slow with runners all over the road, runners would hit on the window of the car begging us for a ride,  it felt like some end of the world movie, it was pretty freaky.  The shuttle driver said that there was not enough ambulances to pick up all the runners with hypothermia.

We got to the park and got dropped off, and after being in the warm van, I was SUPER cold and dripping wet looking for my husband, it was soooo pathetic.

My ipod stopped working after 3 songs, my phone was completely messed up, the face of my garmin fell off, and for the first time in 12 St. George Marathons, my clothes bag was not in the retrival area.

My hubby took me to In and Out for burgers, took me back to the condo, and I had a jetted hot bubble bath and then a fabulous massage and a nice long nap.

I felt good about dropping out, I think had I continued I could have had some serious problems, but now as I write this I am so glad I had the sense to drop and do a half marathon.

I am excited to read all your blogs. For those of you that finished the marathon you are AMAZING!!!!

Glad to read you're ok! Sounds like weather-wise it was a disaster! 13 miles is much better than nothing, so kudos for making it to the half way point. Enjoy some rest!

(Lucia- you beat me again!!!)

Hey Leslie- I am so glad that you are OK! I like that you stopped on mile 13 :) VEry ironic ;) It sounds like this year was just wild and one for the record books! YOu are so sweet to save that poor boy. I am glad you are home all warm and cosy! Sounds like you've got your self a good man to take care of you!

Les, I enjoyed watching you sleep on the bus ride up and sharing body heat against the fence. The first seven miles were great - I was a 'little lonely' after that.

I'm glad you stopped when you did. Do I get to say "I told you so!" about 2 races in 2 weeks?

From leslie on Sat, Oct 04, 2008 at 21:19:36

Sorry I was such lousy company on the bus ride up!!! Yeah, once you left me, it as really tough. DNFing can be a beautiful thing!!!!!!

From tarzan on Sat, Oct 04, 2008 at 22:30:28

Les - just curious. Did they mark your number or something so that a runner could not sneak back and run across the finish line later?

From Kim on Sat, Oct 04, 2008 at 23:13:15

That was a great race report! How many races do you get the opportunity to give a kid who is dropping his father's ashes your pants?! And also feel like you are in an "end of the world" movie?! You did fabulous! I am amazed that you did as well as you did! Thanks for sharing your report!

From jona on Sat, Oct 04, 2008 at 23:16:23

Leslie, You are awesome. You stuck it out for a long long time. Good for you for listening to your body. You will run another race!

I know how much it stinks to have your music stop. My first marathon my ipod stopped working at mile 6. Had I had the weather conditions you had, I think I may have called it good.

Keep smiling!

From leslie on Sat, Oct 04, 2008 at 23:32:45

Maurine, as soon as I got in the Weenie bus they clipped my chip, no sneaking back into the race possible. DANG.

Kim, I am just now going to read your blog, last time I checked you hadn't written, I have my fingers crossed for you!

Jon, thanks! So did you end up doing St. George? The weather stunk.

From jona on Sun, Oct 05, 2008 at 01:56:46

Leslie, I didn't make it in. I'm soooo jealous of all that were able to make it. It is just awesome to hear all the reports. I want to be a part of this next time! I think you and others were just awesome with those bad conditions.

Leslie --

You should get the rights to the movie now!! I have to agree with Kim ... how often do you get to give your pants to someone spreading their dad's ashes on a marathon course?? WOW!!!

Btw, what condo are you staying in? Anychance it's Worldmark?

From leslie on Sun, Oct 05, 2008 at 20:32:11

Teena, we stayed at a friends condo.

I thought my little experience was pretty interesting too.

I hope your recovery is going well

Oh, I am so sorry to hear that you were so miserable but glad you had the sense to listen to your body and be done. It was brutal. You did great to do the half, and that is all that matters!

So, how come I never saw one of those buses leaving and heading back? Actually, I would have been one of those banging on the doors, so I guess I am glad I did not see one!

Now, to WW!!!! Let's just kick the pants off of our weight issues, shall we??? Training and losing weight is a nightmare---so now we are done with that. I am eating like a saint, and will lose these dang 6 pounds! WE CAN DO THIS!
