Personal:

I started running at age 40 (14 years ago!)  I am married to Harold, he is a super supportive husband and we enjoy running and biking the trails along the Wasatch Front together. Between us we have 7 children and 9 grandchildren.  I am really having fun trying new races in scenic parts of Utah, I am a newbie in the ultrarunning world, I am slow, but love everything about it!  I have a lot to learn, but I am enjoying the journey.

I called Maurine last night and asked her if she would help pace me for a "tempo" run, I have been running for years at my own slow pace and haven't paid much attention to all these training methods.  Maurine tried to explain a tempo run to me, but she got all fancy and most of it went over my head.  All I got out of it is a tempo run is a fast one, not a lollygag one.  So as far as I understand, I did a tempo run Monday, but I didn't do as "smart" as I did it with Maurine's expert guidance this morning.  On  Monday, I took off fast and ran out of steam at the end.  I did do an avg. pace of 11:57 ( I think that was what it was).  So here is my report of this mornings run!

I met Maurine at LaCocina at 6:15 this morning.  She said we are going to start with mile long warm up at about a 13 min. pace.  We did.  Then she said we are going to try and maintain an 11:00 min. mile pace for 3 miles and then a cool down of a 13min. mile for the last mile. We did. She was right on!   At mile 4 she had me push to a level 9 effort and told me to keep it up for a 1/4 mile and I kept it up for a bit and then got so out of breath that I had to slow down.  Thank you Maurine!!!!!  It was a fabulous run and well worth the bribe of a hot chocolate!!!!

Your tempo was FANTASTIC!!! It is SO hard to maintain an even pace! I am always going for negative splits because it is easier than then same pace! YOU ROCK!!!

You did well, Les. I was proud of you.

I think we should do the next tempo run on 7th East. It is flat enough and we could run side-by-side. Just need to do it early enough in the morning.

I really think you let uphills psych you out. I have worked the past few months on running up all hills - no matter how slow I go and I think that has contributed a lot to my increased endurance and speed.

Okay Maurine, I am game, you let me know what works for you, and we will shave off afew more seconds. I was very happy with todays run!! I think you should run in a cheerleading outfit!! :) Thanks for coaxing me along, and you were definitely not a nag, the complete opposite, positive and encouraging!!! Thanks again!!

A personal running coach- nice! Great miles, Leslie. I bet you will be speeding up in no time with such wonderful support! You deserve it :)

What's even better - she pays me to do it!

Yep - she lets me exercise her massive dog as a reward. (but I also get an occasional meal out of her)

GREAT job on the tempo run! It is all so confusing to me. Someone would have to MAKE me do it as well. But, now you know, and you did it, and you were awesome, and you can do it again, and you can get faster, and you are AMAZING!!!!

Have a SWELL day!

That's an awesome tempo run. Kudos to the coach too. It's really tough to maintain the somewhat uncomfortable pace for the set amount of miles. You two did us proud this morning. SUPER run, AWESOME friend and coach!!!
