Personal:

I started running at age 40 (14 years ago!)  I am married to Harold, he is a super supportive husband and we enjoy running and biking the trails along the Wasatch Front together. Between us we have 7 children and 9 grandchildren.  I am really having fun trying new races in scenic parts of Utah, I am a newbie in the ultrarunning world, I am slow, but love everything about it!  I have a lot to learn, but I am enjoying the journey.

Did a 7 mile bike ride on the JRP with Julie. Feeling like I am back to normal after the marathon. I plan to take it pretty easy though, the Pony Express 50 is only 9 days away.

You recover well! Now you just need to eat a clean diet, get plenty of sleep, run a little, and not do anything stupid. LOL Best wishes!

Are you nervous? I am. My calves have been tight/achy the last couple of days. You think I should take a day off or just go slow and short?

From leslie peterson on Wed, Oct 07, 2009 at 11:10:03 from 76.23.61.78

Sno, you made me laugh! Yes, I am trying to take it easy and eat clean, lots of water.

Jun, I get butterflies just thinking about this!!! Scared and excited. I am not sure exactly what I should be doing training wise, but since I just did SG Sat. I think my game plan is to rest up and walk and cross train, very little running.

Jun, remind me, is this your first 50? I have probably asked before, but I am old and forgetful. Who is crewing for you? I have my 23 year old daughter crewing for me. I can not believe I am actually going to do this!!!!!!!

From leslie peterson on Wed, Oct 07, 2009 at 11:12:12 from 76.23.61.78

Jun, I didn't try and answer your question, I am so flustered. I think you should take a day off, but I am not an expert. I just figure at this point, we need to be really careful to stay clear of injury and keep our legs fresh! Good luck.

From jun on Wed, Oct 07, 2009 at 12:58:30 from 66.239.250.209

That is what I was thinking too. I think I'll just take the day off and make sure everything feels good. I'll go like 6 miles tomorrow, but just keep it really slow.

Yes, this is my first 50. I think my step-father will be crewing me. Twinkies is going to run with me, so my step-dad will crew both of us at the same time. It should be super fun.

I was thinking, at least for the first several miles, we will all be running pretty close together. It will be fun to get to know you and others as we enjoy this completely ridiculous race. Ha.

Hey Leslie and Jun ~

I am more than nervous. My calves are still sore. I don't plan on doing any real running this week...just easy jogging. I'm gonna test the legs next week. If I can run, then I will do Pony Express. Right now Wendy said she would crew me. It seems such a sacrifice for the crew to spend a whole day out there. Anyway, I just want to do this to celebrate my birthday...by "killing myself!"...kinda silly when I think about it.

I need advise. What do you bring? What do you tell your crew? I have NO clue how to prepare for this. HELP!

From RAD on Wed, Oct 07, 2009 at 14:54:17 from 76.27.12.70

WOW - THIS is a blog full of amazing ladies...not only a marathon, but a 50 miler all in the works in the next 9 days! So impressed with ALL of you amazing women! Where is the pony express race? Close enough for me to come cheer you on and maybe pace a few miles?

From leslie peterson on Wed, Oct 07, 2009 at 19:04:48 from 76.23.61.78

Jun, looks like most of the runners are all very experienced ultra runners.Very impressive group of people. I emailed Davy about starting early, I will be the slowest runner of the group I am sure. He gave me the go ahead, so I will be starting at 6:00am with my friend Gary. So make sure and say hi as you pass me by!!!!

Smooth, that would be great if you do it! How fun to have Wendy crew you, my 23 year old daughter will crew Gary and I since Harold will have to work.

I am bringing everything I can think of, change of clothing, shoes, socks, so I can be prepared for cold and hot weather. A cooler with lots of food, cause who knows what will float my boat at mile 40 something? I have a container of first aid supplies, container of blocks, gu and gels several gallons of water, a bucket incase I need to soak my feet,a towel, a thermos with soup, flashlights, an ipod., sunscreen, bug spray and I am sure many other odds and ends that I can't think of right now.

For Jana, my crew, she is going to have a DVD player, a book, magazines, a lawn chair and a clip board with the course info from the website and a pen to take notes on how I feel at different mile points. If I can think of anything else I will post it here, I just had my tooth pulled and I am doped up on lortab, so I am not all "here". I really hope you do this Smooth!!!!! What a wonderful birthday present to yourself!!!!!!

From leslie peterson on Wed, Oct 07, 2009 at 19:11:46 from 76.23.61.78

Rachel!!!! This race is super remote. So remote I haven't asked anyone to pace me. The start is over an hour drive from I-15 in Lehi. I drove it with my daughter and it is in the middle of nowhere. I really wish I could have a pacer, but it is so far to drive, that I haven't asked anyone. I wish I could have you there to pace me,but I know it is too much to ask of anyone.

From Maurine/Tarzan on Wed, Oct 07, 2009 at 19:19:14 from 12.177.156.2

Man - I am so jealous of you running this race and my being in a 'starting over' phase. This whole thing was MY IDEA! (pouting).

Take it easy and let the bodies heal before your big race.

From RAD on Wed, Oct 07, 2009 at 19:24:12 from 76.27.12.70

I wish it was closer too. It would be fun to get in a few of those miles with you and/or Smooth or at least enjoy some of that soup :) Good luck!

9 days? Maybe you need to taper. :-) I can't wait to read your report. Is this your first 50 miler?

From leslie peterson on Thu, Oct 08, 2009 at 09:49:07 from 76.23.61.78

Scott, yes, this is my first 50 miler! Wish me luck, I will need it!!!

From leslie peterson on Thu, Oct 08, 2009 at 09:51:23 from 76.23.61.78

Maurine, I know the feeling, when you were out doing the Antelope 50 miler, I was green with envy!

From Smooth on Fri, Oct 09, 2009 at 10:15:00 from 174.23.240.142

Leslie,

How do we taper for this? How much should I run the next 6-7 days? I ordered the dirtygirlgaitor last night. Hopefully they'll arrive in time. I'm gonna look for Injinji socks too.

Maurine,

Wish you were doing this. Miss you terribly!

From jun on Fri, Oct 09, 2009 at 10:31:00 from 66.239.250.209

Smooth, I had a friend run his first 50 miler earlier this year and he told me that you shouldn't run for up to a week before the race. I think that is a bit excessive, but I only plan to run short on Monday and Tuesday and take two days off prior to the race. I'll run today and tomorrow, as well, but probably very slow and short. I just want to keep my legs stretched, is all.

From Smooth on Fri, Oct 09, 2009 at 10:43:12 from 174.23.240.142

Thanks Jun! I'm going to follow your lead. Run short and easy today, tomorrow and couple of days next week.
