Personal:

I started running at age 40 (14 years ago!)  I am married to Harold, he is a super supportive husband and we enjoy running and biking the trails along the Wasatch Front together. Between us we have 7 children and 9 grandchildren.  I am really having fun trying new races in scenic parts of Utah, I am a newbie in the ultrarunning world, I am slow, but love everything about it!  I have a lot to learn, but I am enjoying the journey.

What a fun weekend!  Harold and I took off around 1:00 to head down to Green River, when we arrived at our cabin at Shady Acres we were greeted by Smooth and Kelli  and then Larry and Scott and 4 of Kelli's little ones. It was so much fun visiting, we all drove over to the Senior Citizen's Center for dinner and talked with some of the other runners and  enjoyed a potato bar dinner.  There were a lot of runners from Colorado.
After we got into bed, Laurie and Chris came knocking on our door, so we visited them for awhile and made plans for our morning ride over to Goblin Valley, about a 45 min. drive.
At 6:30 am Kelli, Smooth, Laurie and I drove over to Goblin with Harold, the rest of the gang were going to sleep in and join us later in the day.
We saw JD at the start and chatted and got some pictures and then we were off.  I stayed with Laurie for most of the first half of the race, we met a gal from Nebraska and a gal from Logan that we ran with for a while.  The aid stations were great, I was fueled by Tagalongs ( Girl Scout Cookies) at every station.  The weather was beautiful, nice and cool with cloud cover for the first half of the race.  Nice scenery and more hills than I remember. I swear running is like childbirth, you forget the hills and remember all the fun and friends, and the pain is quickly forgotten.

I am not very good at checking the pace but when we reached the half way point we had averaged about a 13. something pace.
Laurie was feeling great and took off, I would see her once and awhile from a far blazing ahead in her bright pink shirt.
After the turnaround I was pretty pooped, by mile 18 I was trying to talk myself into dropping out, Chris showed up on his bike at about that point and gave me a smile and a little coaxing and then Harold showed up on his bike at mile 20. I told him I was thinking of dropping and he talked me out of it, he rode by my side until we were almost at the parking lot of the campground. At this point I was really dragging then this beautiful girl came running towards me looking so strong and it was my Kelli!!!  I could have bawled,  I found out that she finished in 3:59 and then went back on the course to run Smooth in and then back again to run me in. I was able to pick up the pace with her encouragement. Kelli is a running angel!!!!!!!
The last mile running thru the Goblins was tough, it was like a maze running back and forth following the path of pumpkins that were set up to mark the trail, some of Kellis's kids and Laurie's kids were playing and following us around.  I kept telling Kelli I would love to beat 7:11, she was pushing me as hard as I could go, at the very end Laurie and her friend came and grabbed my arms and pulled me up the final hill and I crossed the finish line at exactly 7:11 (point something)
I guess the word is out the course was short because of the rainstorm, but whatever I ran the Goblin Valley 50K in 7:11 and I'm sticking to it!!!!
Thank you Kelli, Smooth and Laurie for such a fun weekend, and of course your cute families!!!!  Harold was awesome. Thanks sweetie, if you are reading this! I love you!

Twinkies, Kelli really was an angel, this is the second time she has been a huge help/inspiration to me. She is a "giver" for sure, I feel so lucky to have her as a friend.

JD, it was nice to meet you, I am sure our paths will cross again. I was so sorry to hear about your horrible drive home, I still haven't heard from Smooth, she left Sat. too, I hope Larry and her got home safe. Happy trails JD!

Scott, thanks, it is nice to have another ultra under my belt, this one was a wake up call, I was not prepared and I got what I deserved, I am really going to change my tune and shed some weight and train harder! I am not discouraged, just extremely motivated. My next race is the Mesquite Half next month and I will be READY!

Thanks my dear running friends!

Sno, thanks! How is your running and your life? I haven't heard from you in a while, I hope all is well.

Ah, Leslie, you made me cry!!! I LOVE YOU!!!! You did great, I hope I can still run like you when I reach your beautiful YOUNG age. Seriously, you are amazing and you did great. You may have felt pooped, but you were still smiling and happy as could be!

Who cares if the course was short, we ran our ultra! Stupid rain.

Take care. I hope you are resting peacefully and enjoying your vacation!

Congratulations on another ultra finish and a fun race. Sorry you were struggling during it. Are you going to focus on running more next year, or continue on with lots of hiking? I'd love to have an occasional running partner again.

That's so cool Congrats on a great race. There is nothing better than to be supported by the ones you love.

From Smooth on Mon, Oct 25, 2010 at 22:53:42 from 67.41.235.104

Leslie ~ I had soooo much fun with you and Harold and the gang! You are my trail running idol! I just love you! I think Harold is AWESOME! It's easy to see why you two make a perfect team! He is so kind just like you!

WAY to keep going at the end. I cannot wrap around my little head running out there that long. I am still in awe of all the ultras you ran. You are going to be my mentor when I decide to commit myself in ultra trail running. And yes, I am semi-hooked! You are right about trail running being easier on the legs than road running!

Happy running! Have fun at Mesquite w/ your friends and enjoy that spa!

From leslie peterson on Tue, Oct 26, 2010 at 11:01:41 from 174.52.158.81

Jun, yes I agree, I know you have alot of family support too, we are lucky!

Smooth, thanks for all the kind words, I am so happy you and Kelli had such a great time! It is a whole different animal for sure.

Smooth, didn't you say you are staying at the Casablanca when you run the Valley of Fire? If so, I will look for you! I am excited about a half marathon, it sounds like a fun walk in the park after what we just did!! Thanks for being such a great friend and I will see you on the trails soon!

From RAD on Tue, Oct 26, 2010 at 15:34:42 from 67.172.229.125
