Long-Term Running Goals:

Stay fit enough to run marathons all thru my life

Personal:

I started running at age 40 (14 years ago!)  I am married to Harold, he is a super supportive husband and we enjoy running and biking the trails along the Wasatch Front together. Between us we have 7 children and 9 grandchildren.  I am really having fun trying new races in scenic parts of Utah, I am a newbie in the ultrarunning world, I am slow, but love everything about it!  I have a lot to learn, but I am enjoying the journey.

This was my 14th St. George Marathon.  It is always fun, but I don't have much to brag about this time. I was under trained and over weight. I saw the pictures Harold took and about puked.  I really need to  get serious about my fitness level  and my weight.

I drove down with Maurine and Marcia and had a great time visiting.  Since we left in the morning I got to spend about 3 hours at the expo!  It was fun running into Smooth and Kelli and few others.

Went to the Pasta Dinner with Maurine and Marsha, it has improved since I last went 10 years ago.

Spent the evening with Harold and some of the grandkids.

I got up at 3:30am and rode up the bus alone but found Maurine and Vic right away. We got to visit with Rachel, Smooth and Teena for afew minute. It was really warm, which is odd, I usually freeze.

Maurine and I ran together for the first 10 or 11 miles, I felt fine, we were in front of the5:30 pace group.  At mile 11 the heat started to really bother me and I started to slow down, I didn't see Maurine again.

At mile 15 I ran into Vic and we played leap frog the rest of the way in.  After about mile 19 Harold called he said it is 88 degrees, it felt like 108.  I could not believe so many people were walking. I saw one guy laying in a tiny piece of shade and someone asked him if he was okay and he said help was coming, acouple minutes later an ambulance came by to get him.

Running the last few miles thru the streets were tough, but I kept moving in fear of going over the 6 hour limit.  Thank goodness I made it.

Next year I willl be more prepared and have some of this weight off.

After the marathon we went and played with the grandkids at  the pool and then went to the 10 year Banquet.  Fun times.

It was so fun to see you at the expo and the fire pit. Larry and I kept saying how much tougher it is for those out on the course in the heat! I am glad you finished in a good time and conquered another tough one! sounds like you had fun! sorry we missed you at the finish. Looking forward to GV and party with you!!!

I can not wait to be as cool as you and say, "After the marathon, I played with the grandkids!!" That is awesome, that and to say you have run 14!!! Nice!

See you in 3 weeks, i am so not excited right now. I need the pain to wear off.

From Teena Marie on Sun, Oct 03, 2010 at 23:42:46 from 174.23.122.157

It was so good to see you at the fire pit. It seemed like it had been forever.

That dang heat!!!

You are a rockstar!!!

Congrats on your race Leslie. Just finishing in that heat is pretty impressive for anyone. I looked for you, but I didn't see anyone from the blog.

Les, I enjoyed spending two days with you. Sorry you struggles so much. That heat was awful. I think I really prefer the crappy weather - as miserable as I was then, it was the heat that actually made me want to quit.

Get a good recovery in for Goblin Valley! (What day is that?)

It was fun Maurine, but hopefully I will be in better shape next year, I need to do a race a month, I went all summer without racing and really got lazy!! Goblin Valley is the week after PE.

Thanks again for the ride down and the fun times!

From Kelli on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 10:06:31 from 71.219.65.246

Hey, I agree! I would take the rain ANY day over that heat.

From Snoqualmie on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 10:58:49 from 24.18.192.33

Sounds like it was a killer day in terms of the temps. Good job toughing that out. The slower marathons can be the hardest in those conditions because you are out there sweating for so long. Good job!

Way to go Leslie! 14 SGM? Really. Your awesome!

From LuzyLew on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 12:23:48 from 208.187.197.42

This sounds like my kind of race day-- except for the heat. To be able to play in the pool with the grand kids post race is the best you can hope for. I love that, as one of the most hard core ultra marathoners on the blog, you write "got to get serious about my fitness level". Funny girl. I know what you mean though...Good luck at Pony Express. Hopefully the weather will cooperate!! Great job at one more SGM under your (very accomplished) belt!

From leslie peterson on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 13:14:35 from 174.52.158.81

thanks everyone for the nice comments, but it was a tough one for me. I can't say I am getting old because Smooth doesn't let that slow her down, I need work harder I guess!

Luz, I am not going to do the PE this year, I am still recovering from last year! I am going to do the Goblin Valley 50k though in 3 weeks. Heaven help me, I need to drop 10 pounds to give me some confidence!

From Bourneadams on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 16:37:30 from 24.10.238.251

Leslie, good job finishing. I worried about that heat - yuck! Too bad the race wasn't the next day when it cooled off a lot. You're awesome and my inspiration. I've really got to get serious.

Thanks Lisa, lets try and run together and keep each other motivated!

Leslie, what an amazing woman you are! That race was SO hot, I guess since it was my first I now know each race will be better :)

Congrats on keeping up the pace on the way in and not being the one in the sliver of shade. Many times I thought how nice it would be to just take a break and get a ride down. But, we keep on pluggin' along!

Thanks for being there at the fire pits. It really meant a lot to me to run into you and have a good chat - I really needed it!!!
