Personal:

I started running at age 40 (14 years ago!)  I am married to Harold, he is a super supportive husband and we enjoy running and biking the trails along the Wasatch Front together. Between us we have 7 children and 9 grandchildren.  I am really having fun trying new races in scenic parts of Utah, I am a newbie in the ultrarunning world, I am slow, but love everything about it!  I have a lot to learn, but I am enjoying the journey.

This is my taper week, I am not good at tapering or should I say, I taper too much. Tapering is way overrated and I always feel sluggish and lazy the week before a run, I need to taper less and run more the week before a race. I  was thinking I need to give my hammered heels a rest, which they need, but my whole mood gets funky when I don't run.   All the hiking and classes at the spa doesn't give me what I need, I have to run, so I need to find the right balance for the week before a run.  Maybe do 4 miles a day every day and do it at a slower pace...  I need to figure this out because I have so many races planned, I can't afford to feel so crappy the week before a race.   Anyway, Laurie saved the day, she came over to my house and we did the Pipeline trail up Millcreek. It was so nice and cool and beautiful, we were on the trail by 6:20, there were several other runners out that early, we had a nice time visiting and going at  an easy pace, Laurie has had a high milage week and was happy to kick back, and I haven't run since Friday, so I was just getting my wings back, so we were both happy to have a run where the time didn't matter.  Ahhhhh, I feel MUCH better.  Thanks Laurie!!!

I did 40 laps in the pool in 34 mins.!! Three days of swimming in a row!

How fun! You guys had a GREAT time. I am going to come some time soon!

As for the tapering- I'd look at some of the other runner and see what they do. I just do a 5, 4, 3, 2 rest thing. I seem to be fresher for my races with less running. But I am VERY unexperienced and pretty lame ;)

Have a GREAT DAY!!!

Mar, that sounds like a good plan, I just know that crosstraining alone isn't the answer for me, I need to do some running. Let me know when you can come up and do a little trail run with us, it is no pressure, nice and easy and it cleanses the soul ( how is that for cheesy???)

Glad to hear you had a good run. Sorry I had to bug out on you. I worked for 90 minutes before heading down to Provo. They just took my dad in for the surgery - only an hour late....

I like what Marion said about the taper. That is about what I have been doing and it seems to give me a good balance of running/rest.

Kim and Marion, thanks! I will give it a try next race! That is easy to remember, 5-4-3-2- BLASTOFF!

Maurine, we missed you on the trail, I hope your dad is okay!!! Let's get a morning run in Millcreek and an evening Little Cottonwood run in on our calenders for next week! We need to get in mucho miles!!!
