Personal:

I started running at age 40 (14 years ago!)  I am married to Harold, he is a super supportive husband and we enjoy running and biking the trails along the Wasatch Front together. Between us we have 7 children and 9 grandchildren.  I am really having fun trying new races in scenic parts of Utah, I am a newbie in the ultrarunning world, I am slow, but love everything about it!  I have a lot to learn, but I am enjoying the journey.

Today was the Buffalo Run.  I got out to the island around 11:00ish, and saw a runner from the distance that took her hat off and waved to me, I thought it was Maurine, but wasn't sure because all runners look alike from that far away. It turned out she recognized my 4 Runner and was waving to me. I found her sister Marsha at the first first aid station and since the aid station was fully staffed we decided to try to find Maurine again and see how she was doing.  We went to the 27 mile aid station and had fun talking to runners and aid station staffers, it was so much fun, all this positive energy. I met a 65 year old man that had just DNFed, but he was all smiles, he said his back was bothering him and the smart thing to do was to drop out, he has done the Wasatch 100 6 times, he said the first time he did it, his 6 year old boy met him at the finish and they held hands across the finish line and now that little boy is running ultras with him.   Marsha and I walked up the trail to a little plateau  and low and behold there was Maurine, she was walking, but there is alot of walking in an ultra so at first we weren't concerned until we saw the shoulders drop and the tears coming down.  She told us about her IT band that was giving her stabbing pain and she knew about 4 miles ago that she would have to DNF or she could seriously cause damage that could take her out the whole season.  It was hard to see her so disappointed, but she definitely did the right thing.  I was so proud of her, she trained so hard all winter and I know it was hard to have her first 50 miler be a DNF.  Now we will both be working on our first 50 miler together in Oct.  I am excited to train with her all summer and work on that goal with her.  She is such a great friend and such an inspiration to me!!!  Thanks Maurine for trusting me enough to be your pacer. I really felt lucky to have the opportunity to be the one to get you thru those last 17 miles.  It will be even better doing the whole 50 with you.  Great Job Maurine!!!!!!!  Rest up good, we have a 12 miler on April 11!

Awe Leslie... that had to be a really hard thing. What a blessing to Maurine to have her with you. I bet her heart is broken :( She is really an amazing athlete and you are one heck of a friend!!! (you are a rocking athlete too ;)

She is such a trooper, she will conquer this next time, I told her we will be running ultras for the next 20 years, and we will both have occasional DNFs, it happens to everyone, but I know she was really bummed that her first one had to end this way, she will bounce back and be back at it 110 percent! Maurine is a tough little cookie, I guess that way one reason it was so hard to see her break down and cry. She is a tender little one inside, but don't tell her I told you that.

Hey, what is the other thing on your bucket list?

You are an awesome friend! I am so glad you were there for her today.

I DID get your messages today, thanks for calling. Funny thing is that it is not my cell phone anymore, it is my BIL's. I will have to pm you my new number. Luckily I checked the blog right before we headed downtown, we were going to come with the kids after the movie and cheer her in.

Hi Kelli! You are so cute, the other thing on my bucket list is to spend a week or more at the Fitness Ridge Spa Resort in Ivans, I look at their website and get so excited, but I am too cheap to actually do it.....one day.

It must have been Maurine that texted you, I don't even have your number. I need it though girl.

crap! You are doing the SL half too? and the Ogden? That is alot of races girl!! Glad you all had such a good race day, I wish Smooth would post her race report, did she place first in her AG?

I am the one texting you, Kelli- I need your new # :) He is probably wondering who in the heck I am and what I want ;)

SHE DID!!! I wish I could remember her time, but I can't! Dang it. She has family in town, so I am sure she is just busy.

I had this plan to run a race very month, but i now think it was a stupid plan. I am getting a bit bunt out!!! The Ogden marathon will be for fun, Scott is trying to get his BQ. I wish i had just let him sign up and that I was going to just cheer him on. My kids had a blast cheering people on today, so Scott and I are going to have to take turns from now on so we can bring them. As of now, he is not signed up for the SL half, but he may be changing his mind. It is another one that he get into for free, so we will see.

The spa in Ivans sounds great!!! My bucket list has a 50k on it, not a 50 miler. Now, to find one to run!

I'm putting that spa on my bucket list! when are we going?

From Kelli on Sun, Mar 29, 2009 at 00:14:08 from 71.219.100.181

That is funny, Marion! My sister was able to tell me the text was about Maurine and what it said, but did not know who it had come from. i knew you had my cell number, nut was not thinking the text came from you. DA.

Les - we need to learn signs so that you can figure out what I am signalling you!

I'm glad you and Marcia hooked up and got to know each other. It was a miracle to me to see you come over the hill together and know that I did not have to figure out how to make arrangements to get to both of you. God must have sent you there.

I told you I would cry at that race. I just didn't know it would be uncontrollable sobs of disappointment. I think it would have been easier if I had already had a 50 miler under my belt - but then again it will make OV 50 even more precious. I think I am going to get us matching shirts for that race!

Thank you for your support and love and lunch!

From leslie on Sun, Mar 29, 2009 at 14:09:57 from 76.23.61.78

Yeah, we need to work on hand signals.

Glad you are in better spirits today.

We are going to have a great running season!! If this stupid snow would stop falling and we can get the trails cleared!!!

I still had a great time on the island, it was a picture perfect day, weather wise. It was fun to go to lunch and I was happy to support you!

Get better quick! How does the IT band feel today? Did you play hookie from church?

From leslie on Sun, Mar 29, 2009 at 14:52:35 from 76.23.61.78

Okay girls, one day we will get down to the Fitness Ridge and hike all day and work out and eat gourmet health food and have cooking classes and come back with new attitude!

Kelli, when you decide on which 50k you let me know, I feel bad I don't have one on my calendar for this year. Sapper Joe sounds tough the week after Ogden, I think the Goblin Valley is the same as the Ogden 50 miler, but not sure. That one is fun. A race a month sounds really fun, especially if you are not RACING them all, it just keeps things fun!

From Kelli on Sun, Mar 29, 2009 at 19:54:39 from 71.219.100.181

Isn't there a 50k in November somewhere?
